I know this console is infamous on this board because of shitposts, but I have always been interested on it, it's library is small but the games I've tried on it have been very fun, like Asterix, Power Strike II, 8-bit Sonic, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Master of Darkness, Phantasy Star, etc..I'll it's a very underrated console.
I was really confused by your pic OP, but then I figured the Japanese Master System probably looks identical to the overseas version, huh?I grew up with both the SMS and NES and always wish I had gotten more games for the SMS. We basically only had Rambo, Wonder Boy, Ghostbusters, and Alex Kidd back then. I'd have lost my fucking mind if I'd gotten to play Phantasy Star, Outrun, or even 8-bit Sonic.I'm planning on getting another Master System pretty soon, it and the SG-1000 are the only Sega consoles I'm missing.
>>12464245Yeah its identical from what I'm seeing.I'd like to buy one at some point, one plus a flashcart will probably cost me a lot.
>>12464256They're more expensive than the later consoles from what I've seen, but the flashcart should be much cheaper. The games themselves aren't too bad either, outside of a few big ones (Phantasy Star).
>>12464256The cheap aliexpress evedrive clone for genesis will let you play sms games.
>>12464268I recently saw a SMS II at $180 (Alex Kidd in Miracle World built-in game, 1 controller, power supply and a RF connector) and Aliexpress has the cheap flashcarts at $20.Do Master Systems II have any differences from the original?
>>12464287>Do Master Systems II have any differences from the original? No mini-din for video out and no fm audio support.
>>12464287Iirc, the SMS II>has a simpler BIOS screen>doesn’t have a card slot so you can’t use those games>only supports RF output, needs to be modded to do composite>no reset button
>>12464287>>12464296Thanks, the only issue would be having only RF output but I'm okay with that.
>>12464226it's actually called the sega system
How intercompatible are the Master System and Genesis controllers? Could I use a Genesis extension cable with my SMS?
>>12464314That should be fine. Most games work alright with Genesis controllers, some don't and to make them work you'll have to modify your Genesis controller by cutting the start/pause trace. I keep a controller to the side for this because I don't like the SMS pad.I'm playing Dracula with a 6-button pad right now.
>>12464314They use EXACTLY the same connector. Go nuts.A handful of games have issues if you use a Genesis controller on SMS but patched versions exist to fix that.
Currently playing the SMS version of The Smurfs, it's an enhanced version of the first Game Boy game (outside the graphical upgrade the controls are far more responsive), there's a lot of flickering and slowdown but I'm enjoying it more than the NES version honestly.
>>12464245>it and the SG-1000 are the only Sega consoles I'm missing. If you're interested in SG-1000 games, you should definitely get an actual SG-1000 instead of playing them on a Mark IIIThe Mark III can play SG-1000 games, but the color palette is different and SG-1000 games look bad on itLeft is SG-1000 and right is Mark III
>>12464340I would love to! But they’re like 500 fucking dollars.
Montezuma's Revenge and Paperboy specifically do not like the Genesis controllers.
>>12464345The second model is relatively cheap. Just don’t get it mixed up with the Mark III.
>>12464351>Just don’t get it mixed up with the Mark III.They do look similar
>>12464226I think I prefer the Master System version of Castle of illusion over the Mega Drive one. I prefer how Mickey controls.
>>12464226It's problably the worst retro major console
>>12464360I think the Mark III even has the model number SG-1000M3, but I might be misremembering. Either way, would be quite the shock if anon dropped $200 on a console he may already have.
>>12464371I don't consider it any worse than n six four
>>12464371>>12464375The worst major retro console is still more worthwhile than any released in the last 20 years.
>>12464378Lets not let comparison be the thief of joy, play your boxes
>>12464371>3DO exists
>>12464394Anon will arbitrarily choose what's a "major console" or not and say the 3DO isn't a "major console" to support his argument/narrative
>>12464226It supposedly has a good version of R-Type, actually ported by Compile.Play Power Strike (AKA Aleste 1). That is a good shooter, extremely Compile-ish. It's actually the original version of the game, the MSX version is a port with levels added. Shinobi is great as well. Darius II (Sagaia) is on it, it's nowhere near as good as the Genesis port but not bad for an 8 bit system at all. Golvelius is supposed to be good too. Compile released a lot of games for it, I don't play much SMS though.
Silly question I'm sure, but are any of the Great sports games actually great? Even good? I've never paid them any mind but seeing Segagaga be incredibly passive aggressive about them got me curious. Also what the fuck man, the Mark III game boxart is so nice. Why did we get the grids overseas??
>>12464330I'm partial to the NES version but the SMS version is probably the most complete one. Some of the added levels like the rotating tree trunk full of holes are annoying as hell though
I'm probably going to play Ultima IV for it, looks kino
>>12464330i want to play this one too, it looks great and the soundtrack is superior to much of the boring/annoying monotonous slop that most master system games have for sound. i played the mega drive and snes version of the smurfs, they are nearly identical to each other in gameplay, levels, graphics and sound. it is one of the best platformers on snes/mega drive respectively.
When I was a kid, I wanted a Master System so badly for Christmas, but my dad got mixed up and ended up getting me a TurboGrafx-16 instead. I couldn't play with my dad because of the mandatory add-on to just plug a second controller.
The genesis version is total ASS but this one is geniunely good.
Mark III deserved Ax Battler: A Legend of Golden
>>12464417The baseball and golf are okay
>>12464417>Also what the fuck man, the Mark III game boxart is so nice. Why did we get the grids overseas??You know why. Because Tonka had no business marketing video games.
>>12464607they're much better than the primitive NES Baseball and Golf because they have way bigger ROMs
>>12464607>>12464798Which Great Golf are we talking? There's an international one developed by Whiteboard, then a JP-only one by Sega.
>>12464509looks good
>>12464925Different games although same ROM size (1 megabit). The Japanese Great Baseball otoh was a 32k launch title for the console (so barely better than NES Baseball) and the US version was a significantly upgrade 1 megabit remake.
>>12464284Mega drive had an official master system converter cart too. Game gear also had one
they eventually released the international Great Golf in Japan anyway as Masters Golf
>>Also what the fuck man, the Mark III game boxart is so nice. This uniformity, for the most part, pleases the autism part of my brain. There is cover one missing, however.
>>12465173yeah the original Great Baseball was unacceptably crude by the time it got here so upgrading it was necessary but idk the need to remake the golf game, nothing particularly wrong with the Japanese one.
>>12465194Given that Loretta no Shouzou was a big game for SG-1000, the packaging probably was to encourage folks to play it on the MK-III instead.
>>12465197Since the remake GG was later released in Japan it's apparent that someone at Sega didn't like the original game or considered it unsatisfactory for who knows what reason.
>>12465201it is the only 1 megabit SG-1000 game although it was sold as a Mark III title
>>12464509The tree trunk level is ASS even if its one of the shortest levels in the game.
>>12464417>>12464795hey i like the grid :(
>>12465820Why?
>>12464312No amount of revisionist history, no photos of boxes or manuals, will ever change the fact that THE SYSTEM ITSELF says "Master System" on it. Even in your own pic it says Master System. Just stop.
>>12464330I fucking love the gb version but have yet to try any ports of it.
Im 14 games away from owning the complete US library (im not buying the stupidly expensive US version of Heavyweight Boxing) and then i want to start looking into the euro library wherebit seems all the good shit stayed. What games were only designed for the pal hardware? Was it only like 3-5 of them or significantly more? Also, was there ever an official or 3rd party controller (old or new) that let you trigger the pause/start button, or would that require hardwiring something to the system board itself to accomplish?
>>12467439Just report and ignore him. Like a dog, he hates being ignored and will give up eventually
Theres a weird charm to the paper grid honestly, I still prefer Mark III boxes but I don't mind the grid as much. The ugly drawings in some covers is the shit I don't like though.
>>12468072Yeah, the grid has never been a problemThe problem is ugly retarded shit like pic related
>>12467491PAL-exclusive SMS games? There are a lot of them. Off the top of my head>Streets of Rage 1 and 2>Ecco>Lion King, Aladdin, >Sonic 2, Chaos, Spinball, Mean Bean Machine>Power Strike 2>Land of Illusion and Legend of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
>>12464312I'll be seeing (you) real soon. >:^)
>>12464562It's pretty good, though it does commit the sin of locking you out of the actual ending unless you collect the super secret hidden macguffins, which involve standing around in specific places in certain levels and waiting for said macguffin to actually spawn. I only ever found one and that was by complete accident.
>>12468149The Astérix games too
>>12468218I have only played the first Asterix, loved the game, how are the sequels?
>>12468087Me and my little brother spent dozens of hours trying to pop the wrestlers' heads off just because it was on the cover.
>>12468149>Streets of Rage 1 and 2>Sonic 2, Chaos, Spinball, Mean Bean MachineThese ones pissed me off. I don't usually download the PAL romsets so I was really confused as to why I couldn't find these. Master System is probably the one console where it's really necessary.
>>12468149>EccoThere's an SMS Ecco? Is it good?
I have fond memories playing on my Mega Drive with the bigass Master System adaptor on top (mid-90s I think). Wonder Boy III was my most played game. In recent years, I have been impressed with the Ultima IV port. I think it might even be better than the DOS version with xU4.
>>12468385It’s the Game Gear version. Pretty good all things considered.
>>12468218wow, this could pass off as an early Megadrive title.
having no sprite flipping was a poor design decision and the Master System had 4 bit color depth so you needed twice as much ROM space as NES for the same amount of content
>>12468149I meant the ones that wont run properly on an ntsc system.
>>12469352A lot of those late release Master System titles show off some very impressive graphics. Shame the console was only being supported in Europe by the time devs were able to make full use of the hardware.
>>12469352The Wonder Boy games look even better imo
Bump
>>12466221i like the way the grid makes the art stand out i guess. not every box looks good but most times it's not the grid's fault
>>12469356a lot of games flip the background tiles and use symmetrical backgrounds to cut down on the amount of tiles needed
Out of interest, do you guys actually like playing the downgraded versions of Genesis games or is it just me?
>>12473181I almost consider them different games. SoR1 was good but SoR2 was terrible.
>>12473181Yes, at least some of them, like for example this game >>12469419>>12473242It's funny how it's the other way around for Game Gear versions.
>>12473181I mean, if you like Master System I see no reason not to at least try them out. Some are interesting, even if only in concept.
unlike the giant horde of NES cart configs there's only four ROM sizes on licensed SMS carts (32k, 128k, 256k, and 512k) and just one basic mapper. also 32k games were usually cards rather than cartridges to reduce costs.
>>12473691It's also one of the easiest of all cartridge era consoles to program, about as hard as writing a Flash game. Maybe one reason it wasn't that successful--programmers do like a challenge and it wasn't challenging enough while the NES could be a pain in the ass to code for.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tkZiDIke6YGhost House, like a lot of SMS games it has numerous flipped tiles to cut down on the amount of graphics needed, also this one was 32k so space was limited anyway (with a 32k game you really only have room for a single tileset)
>>12473701One SMS tile set is 448 tiles, that's how much you can fit in the graphics RAM at once. If you use flipping you can cut it down by half and since the tiles will be stored in a compressed format anyway you can probably reduce it to as little as 3k per set.
>>12473696>Maybe one reason it wasn't that successful--programmers do like a challengeOld coder here, that's not right. Programmers do like a challenge, but generally as a hobby thing when you're young. Once you're doing it for money you want to get the job done as quickly as you can, so the easier machine to code for is preferable. But that's if you asked the coders what they wanted to work on, meanwhile the money was on the NES so the company is gonna want to make games for that instead even if it's a PITA.
>>12473740Not at all. There were many complaints that the PS1 was too easy and baby mode so Sony responded to this by making the PS2 harder and requiring more bare metal coding.
>>12473752>There were many complaints that the PS1 was too easy and baby mode>Source: I made it the fuck up

>>12474067I get ignoring Tri Formation and Cyborg Hunter, I guess, but ignoring Zillion is a step too far.
>>12464226I used to have one of those. It was a neat little console. The only thing that sucked about it was the lack of a pause button in the controller. Getting off your ass to push the pause on the console itself was so tedious. Used to have 4-5 games on it, picrel was my favorite. Stupid hard, I remember making it only to the fifth or sixth level. It also had this neat thing of having pre-installed games on it. No need for a cartridge. It would let you choose between a motorcycle game with similar mechanics to outrun (or rad racer on the NES) or a discount version of duck hunt. NES kind of mogged it just for being able to pause games with the controller. But it was still good fun.
they had the pause button on the console because Japanese gamers tended to set their consoles on the floor in front of the TV so it was easy to reach the button
>>12475312They also tended to sit next to the console. This is also why their controller cords are incredibly fucking short.
>>12475326their rooms are shorter and they all play vidya kneeling on the floor
>>12464226Pretty Game Gear RPGs, GO! First up, Royal Stone
>>12464226I was very disappointed by the frame rate of after burner and space harrier on SMS, even genesis is just passable.A lot of the sms zapper games are amazing. The arcade design of the console and levels is great there, as well as the superior blaster
>>12468650Am I a smooth brain for preferring the nes ultima with its ff style graphics
Next up, Magic Knight Rayearth
>>12475747
Was the SMS more successful in Europe?
Now, Sylvan Tale!
>>12475739Maybe a little bit?No one can choose what pleases their own brand of autism.I personally feel like it's a bit too simplified and in a worse way than DQ1 GBC vs DQ1 NES, for example, as Ultima IV gameplay is more important for its themes. It is neat as its own thing though, even if it makes a subpar JRPG.
>>12475753Yeah. It even led the NES until around 1991. A pretty huge proportion of the library is exclusive to Europe and Brazil.
>>12464371It's unironically Sega's second best console.
>>12475753The Master System literally outsold the NES in Spain and the UK, and was generally pretty close in most of Europe
https://youtu.be/4xBTvvJeijMLove me some NES but I wish the Master System got a fairer shot
>>12464371I rate it above the N64 and Saturn honestly, also above the PC Engine if you want to count it as major, I count it. Well, Master System rocked.
any good master system rom set

Speaking of Gamegear, I find the 8-bit version of Ristar to be pretty damn impressive even with slowdowns, even though I'm not into the big version of the game.
>>12476968That's how I feel about a lot of Sega's 8-bit ports. If nothing else, they put in effort.
