Why is there is so little talk about 90s and 00s PC gaming?
/vr/ is full of nintoddlers
>>12464704>Why is there so little talk about 90s and 00s PC gaming?fixed
>>12464704>Why is there is so little talk about 90s and 00s PC gaming?Nigger, the board literally has a general for practically just PC first person shooters, and another general for Roller Coaster TycoonIs this bait?
>>12464704There is a lot of plastic on that picture.
>>12464704Because it's just a lot less accessible. PC gaming always has been, if we're speaking honestly, but these days, it is ironically easier to play old console games than it is to play PC games of the same period. Emulation has matured to the point that just about anything you'd want to play in the /vr/ period will just work without issue provided you use up-to-date accurate emulators. Old PC games, meanwhile, are not that straightforward, as they often rely on outdated APIs and now unsupported middleware or DRM, often requiring some kind of patch, wrapper, or other kinds of workarounds. There's usually solutions documented in the PC Gaming Wiki, but again, the point is that it's extra work, and while some games are easier to get working than others (or they have a GOG or Steam release that makes them simple to run), others are just a mess. x86 PC emulators or virtualization software can help here, but the former are very slow, and the latter isn't a silver bullet either, and again, they require setup, which shouldn't be too bad for the thinking man that has experience with old PCs but is an immediate filter for those expecting a Just Werx solution.
>>12464704Bitch I'm only here for the Thief threads
>>12464705>full of nintoddlersPretty much
>>12464728Should say it's ironically easier to play old console games *on PC* than PC games of the same period.
>>12464704Because nobody had a computer but rich people >That's a liiiieNo it isn't, console gaming was way cheaper and the only people playing computer games were GenX nerds with ponytails, the oldfags here are mostly Millennials who had SNES/Genesis - PS1-N64
>>12464728Slow down, I ain't reading that wall of text.
>>12464804I played PC games before I did console ones.
i wish there were a board or general for retro computing
>>12464813Just make a thread about things you want to talk about. Threads slide slow here and if you're an IP rentoid you can self-bump in case the subtle as a sledgehammer trolls don't do it for you.
>>12464813I really miss the optimism of retro pc era
>>12464704Man I hate that guy who just tries to cram as many things people are nostalgic for into one picture, it's the most cynical shit.
90s pc games dont work anymoreactually they didnt work back then eitheryou will have to buy some beige windows 95 tower from a yard sale to play themthings like dosbox etc. dont actually work either
>>12464704PC games had no real staying power at all until probably the mid 00s. They were all mostly vaporware with a few gems here and there. But PC gamers had no problems dropping a game the second it was no longer new and never thought about it ever again.
>>12464728They were also a lot more accessible back in the day when more households would have a $120 NES or SNES and not really a $1K PC to play games on. Loads of people that had PCs never wanted their kids to touch them at all ever, also because they were so expensive at the time. Plus the 80s up to late 90s installing a game was a grueling 5 floppy disk process and the PC only really had enough memory for one game at the most.
the quality of posts on here is abysmal today
>>12465120>>12465145>>12465153why are nintendo and snoys fags a bunch of pathological liars?
>>12464704There's regular threads for a handful of games but there's not that many PC games people are interested in playing and that's the hard truth of it. People like doom, quake, duke, diablo and red alert. That's kind of it.
>>12464704Here and in other parts of Europe PC gaming was way more popular than console gaming>>12465490>forgetting Age of Empires, The Sims, Theme Hospital, Transport Tycoon, Half-Life, Call of Duty, Max Payne, Need for Speed, Xcom, Warcraft, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Heroes, Gothic, Unreal Tournament, Counter Strike, Deus Ex, System Shock, Starcraft, Baldur's Gate and multple Star Wars games
>>12465530These games all get threads here, nobody is forgetting them.
>>12465547I know, that's what the other guy was implying
>>12465558I am that guy and those all fit within that handful of games that get discussed. Are we gonna bemoan the fact there's not a Cybermage or CyClones general on this board too or something? There's only so many PC games people want to talk about. If you start making Hocus Pocus threads that last more than 20 replies maybe I'll change my mind but the fact is nobody is that interested in PC gaming outside of those games.
>>12465561Well those games don't have dedicated schizos who makes a new thread every few hours like Resident Evil or Pokemon
>>12464704Dude what board have you been visiting? 90s and 00s PC gaming is one of the most discussed things on /vr/.
>>12465568Is it so bad there's so little talk about 90s and 00s PC gaming then?
>>12465570The retro FPS general seems pretty active at least
>>12464704>baja blast>fucking storeboughtwas that edited in? it's too on-the-nose wrong
>>12464704I think PC had lot of fans in the 90s and 2000s, at least south and western Europa, same goes for maybe Argentina and other spanish speaking countries and I bet south Asia pc gaming was interestin in those years too. Most of CD demos/shareware/games were created in Deutschland and then distributed in other countries
>>12465321That last one was word for word what life was like with my parents 486 in 1993. Space Quest 4 was 5 flippy discs, it took about 2 hours to install, the HDD could only really hold one game at a time so when we were done with it, it was uninstall and never really touch the game again. Damn thing was about $2000 in early 90s money when most good incomes were around $40K a year. And they were super protective of it from all younger kids. what's your rebuttal to that retarded zoomzoom? Some more>uhh err uhh...no you're lying!!!
>>12465634>you're lying!!!Yea pretty much thatnow kill yourself lying faggot
we get our first PC compatible a 486 DX/2 66 in 1995. i never touched a console game until my sister got a PS1 a few years later.
>>12464808>can't read one fucking paragraphTake your ritalin, zoomer
>>12464705nintendo derangement syndrome
>>12465634Yep, it's called go fuck yourself lying faggot kill yourself.
>>12464704Because there are a shitload of PC games, that it's kind of impossible to reasonably have a blanket PC game discussion that covers all of it combined. Majority of the fans stick to a genre and keep all talk in a RTS thread/board, or RPG, or flight sim, or classic point and click adventure, FPS that kind of thing.
>>12465713This PC has had more games than all the other consoles combined
>>12464728that's a lot of words to say you don't know shit about the topic
>>12465638>>12465705i agree. i had a hand me down 486 in the mid 90s. it wasn't that expensive 2nd hand anyways. and no, it don't take 2 hrs to install 5 floppies. not the 1.44 MB floppies anyway. 6MB of game data can be copied to HDD pretty fast.>Vogons Wiki reports an overall transfer speed of about 30 kB/s when reading from a 1.44 MB disk, which could be optimized with tools like vgacopy by adjusting track interleaveit takes about 3 mins to read 6MB of floppy data, not including time needed to change disks . even less time to copy them to HDD.so lies upon lies. can mods pls ban the AI bot posts>>12465634 >>12465153 ? i doubt it but whatever.
>>12465634This post reeks of botposting>>12465640i had a pentium mmx 166 that ran battlezone and the thrice cursed men in black the game, and came with a voodoo 2, that alone killed any interest i had with gaming
>>12464813>>>/g/
>>12464769>Should say it's ironically easier to play old console games *on PC* than PC games of the same period.Fucking this. I had a PC in the mid-90s which was either the best or the worst time depending on how much money you had. I had no money so the yearly upgrade cycle to stay on top of the rapid progress happening from DOS SVGA -> directX -> glide -> direct3d with stopovers in 16bit software rendering to REALLY ruin your framerates meant that there were so many games I could only get a shitty experience with.Fast forward to today and running them natively on a modern PC? Almost universally impossible. My choices then are dosbox and 86box and in both cases they tend to run only about as well as my mid-90s PC ran them.Meanwhile chrono trigger ran well in 1995 and it runs well in any snes emu you like today.
>>12465870i see no retro computing board or thread there.
>>12464813I wouldn't mind a general for old computers. Especially with what I have going on, trying to solve a checking NVRAM error for a potential XP machine I'm trying to set up. Asked on a /sqt/ thread on /g/, but it's most certainly going to be ignored.
>>12464813Nobody is stopping you from making a retro computing thread here or on /g/Also, there wouldn't be enough activity for an entire board
>>12465870>go to the board filled with nothing but AI generals and daily software console war shitflingingNo fucking thanks. And I used to call that my home board at one point in time.
>>12466147Then make your retro computing thread here, nobody is stopping you
not enough scrimblo bimblos
I want to go back
>>12466186>Windows 7 wallpaperNot retro
>>12466186My cousin used to accidentally press the power switch on the PC with his toes all the fucking time, triggering the Suspend function. Drove me up the wall.

>>12464704Majority of people using this website are filthy consoletards.
>>12466105>>12466141>>12466159here you go >>12466259
>>12464704I have no clue what you mean, as I can talk anyone's ear off about that time period of PC gaming. As that is when I was most active in PC gaming, it is my era, I will be here for you if needed. I am even taking great strides in the form of my time machines to revisit that era as it was bliss. Understandably, with all sorts of configurations that can vary there may not be as much in shared experiences, but those differences I find are interesting. Maybe, others have moved on and it is simply convenient with GOG if they wish to revisit that others may not give as much thought into it, but if anything it is meaningful to me.
>>12466229True
>>12464704There's plenty. You're just looking in the wrong places.
>>12464704idk you tell me
>>12469645^This.
>>12464704what a dumbass fucking picnobody played Crysis on that kind of a PC
why, OP, what would you like to discuss?
>>12464704older computer games are irritating and confusing to get working. with console emulators you just download one thing and it works immediately (mostly).
>>12464728And even if you want to go with period-accurate hardware, it's difficult to get an all in one setup which "justwerks" with everything. I know even my old Pentium III PC runs some games from earlier in the 90s too fast, and to make them run at a playable speeds, I'd have to throttle the CPU.
>>12473189Yeah, I've heard if you want to be able to play almost everything with real hardware, you need AT LEAST three distinct machines, and that's assuming they have the ability to do CPU downclocking and cache disabling. Without those, you probably need double that amount.
>>12464704if you keep talking about it scalpers are going to notice
