Post the games that made you think the future had arrived and things couldn't possibly improve on it. Could be based on graphics, gameplay, sound, all of the above, but whatever it was, it made you feel like video games had peaked.Pic related blew my mind, honestly thought it looked almost as realistic as watching live tennis. The lighting, the smooth animations, the sound effects - didn't think tennis games could get any better.Bit more obvious because of the tech jump, but Mario 64 would be another. Still remember seeing that game for the first time in Toys'R'Us and wanting it so badly it hurt, just couldn't believe a game could look that good.
>>12467461Oblivion. I could go anywhere, enter any area and house, no limits. Physics, I could shoot an arrow at wooden walls and pick them up. Or they would stick on enemies. Or I could grab and lift stuff. NPCs having lives of their own. Warrior, thief, mage, all were fun to play.
>>12467461I wasn't up-to-date on stuff in the '90s. I didn't know there was a new Nintendo console. I was really impressed with Star Fox then. Got dragged to a dinner with another family and the kids were playing Hoth in Shadows of the Empire on N64. It was extremely shocking. Ugly game lol (I like it though) but at the time I didn't know that was possible. The real biggest shock was having played N64 and PSX then popping in Gran Turismo 3 for the first time.
>>12467484I know it's the same handful of people, but the sheer amount of voice acting/dialogue was impressive as well.
>>12467484I got this same feeling when I played Duke 3D for the first time. Being able to freely run inside the cinema like if I was there myself and interact with stuff like lights and mirrors felt so amazing at that time.
>>12467512And lip-synced, I remember noting that. And shine on hair. Specular maps giving depth to textures in general. All kinds of neat stuff in Oblivion. It wasn't the peak yet, but games haven't advanced THAT far ahead either.
>>12467461Those were the times, I am glad you remember virtua tennis along soul calibur, two greatest hits from early 2000s
super smash bros brawlthe intro of budokai tenkaichi
Half-Life 2 when you drop out the window onto a box, and it breaks.

>>12467916Read the rules, newfag.
>>12467946I forgot jannies began allowing 2007 PC games because they're gay and retarded and take cocks up the ass but Brawl is a 2008 Wii game
>>12467960Having Crysis be considered a retro game is hilarious
>>12467461Gex N64, NFS Most Wanted and LotR Return of the King, It just blew my mind because it featured real life actors.
>>12467461With Soul Calibre I knew that technology would improve but I thought there was not much point as the polys and textures were already so high. I think this was true until HD as I don't think even xbox games look that much better, it was more about the bigger worlds.
>>12467916wii and ps2 are retro
Super Smash Bros. MeleeI was playing Smash 64 just hours prior and the in-game graphics, with characters' clothing reacting to wind on some levels, was just completely unbelievable for me.Of course, now I play it and can see how many corners were cut with rendering this or that, but at the time, I genuinely could not believe how fucking beautiful the game was. I think I even cried the first time I saw the opening FMV?
>>12468295>I think I even cried the first time I saw the opening FMV?Yes, you did. It was quite embarrassing.

>>12467461Art of Fighting is the first and only time I remember being genuinely amazed at how pretty a video game looked.
>>12467461I never saw a game I thought couldn't be improved on. That said, the most relatively impressive games I remember were:- Battleclash for SNES (super scope mech game, not a top10 but back in 1992 the speed, colors, animations and sound just felt arcade-quality)- Everquest (not for the graphics, but for the working 3D virtual world)
>>12467461For a very long time, all I had was a 16MB video memory laptop and a ps1. Folks back home had a PC with some nvidia card that had 32MB but I couldn't play much since I was away. When I got xbox, Thief Deadly Shadows and Doom 3 blew me away. Thief had dust particles from windows and that amazed me.Doom 3 simply finished it with those shadows and models. I always loved the exploration in the beginning, even if it was shorter on xbox. Imho it went to shooting too quickly, would have appreciated exploration and survival aspect more.
>>12467461GTA3
>>12467484Also this. I would read that manual for days while being away. A game where you could be anything. Too bad it was janky af but didn't stop me from enjoying it. The leveling of npc's did though.
>>12467461Ace Combat 4 intro when the first plane is getting ready on the carrier was a massive moment for meJust about everything in Final Fantasy X was incredible. Especially the facial expressions.NBA 2K on DreamcastTiger Woods 2K5I'll add some more as I can think of them
Unreal Tournament
>>12467461Shenmue. Going from the PS1 and N64 to graphics like that was mindblowing. It looked even better on a CRT where flaws like the low resolution textures were hidden a lot more.
People like to rave about SoulCalibur for the DC and with good reason, but for me it was Dead or Alive 2. On a tecnical level and spectacle it was insane. Animation, camera angles, destructable enviroments, Tag battle, smooth framerate. It had everything I could wish for for a fighting game at the time.
