N64 is the only major retro console I never had any interest in even when it was new and it boggles my mind how many people here seem obsessed with it. All that said, Monster Rancher is pretty dog shit compared to Pokemon.

The main gimmick is that the games would read any CD you owned and generate a monster and its starting stats from the game's library of species, after which you'd train the monster's individual stats up, learn new moves, and battle to get money.The secondary gimmick is time: your monster has a life span so when it starts it's liable to be temperamental and its stat gains will be weak, getting better as it matures. But that includes an end of life, and your monster can die from old age, being over-exerted if your don't make sure it gets rested and force it to do something really rough, or even taken too big of HP damage if it's tired during a battle. There's a lot more than that but that's the basic gist.
