>>

It's a huge hassle to host roms and isos, very different from hosting romhacks.
>>
>>12467739
Nta, but I'd say it's a pain in the ass to host anything but the likes of Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, NES, Master System, Genesis, and SNES due to file sizes.
MAME and CD-based games? I can't see that as being anything other than a huge pain in the Asteroids.

I'm downloading games for PS1, PS2, and PSP. I grew up on a Tendie diet (N64, GBA, and GCN). So far, I've got about 400 GB and 354 games. Snoy fags ate good back in the day.
I confess I've also downloaded some multiplats that I could've played on GameCube or N64, but I never did because I was too busy replaying Ocarina of Time for the millionth time.
Because I’m autistic, I’m making a list in Markdown and I’ll be linking a page for each game I play to keep a journal of it. I’ve done this with books, and I think it will work well with games too.

Not true, there is some information that CHD does not retain and is lost in the conversion, and yes this lost information does effect playing the games. There are a few dozen Saturn games effected by it, results range from the music or voice acting being messed up to the game not working at all.

People have been asking the MAME devs that made the CHD format and chdman conversion tool to add support for this for years, but they don't seem to consider it a priority.

What is the go-to for computer games? And to clarify by computer I mean computer systems in general, not just IBM compatible PCs, but systems like Commodore, Apple, Spectrum, etc. No-Intro doesn't seem to have most of those systems at all, and the ones they do they seem to just have a few handful of dumps. Redump is only for disk-based games, and even for computer games that were released on disk a large amount are missing.

TOSEC has just about all of them but they are a huge mess with everything split into sub-sub-sub-sub-sub categories based on file type and even game genre, and there are literally millions of useless nonsense files in there on top of the games.
>>
>>12468078
>But that describes data reduction, not compression. They call it compression?
NTA but you're an idiot, that's just the difference between lossless and lossy compression. Converting a WAV file to MP3 is still called and considered compression, even though obviously data is lost in the conversion. Are you seriously trying to argue that CHD is lossless in all situations just because of the semantics people use?
>>
I know myrient has a bunch of homebrew games with unreleased roms otherwise. Someone should get those
>>
>>12469793
NTA but wow it sure seems like the guy who invented CHD is being overly defensive about their shitty algorithm and doesn't give a shit what words mean

Ok, where are the nintendo and game freak leaks on archive or vimms? Where is the Eggman’s Arcade Repository? A proper full TeknoParrot archive? The full LittleBigPlanet 1-3 level archives?

We're not just talking about downloading Nintendo roms here. Also, downloading from archive feels like I am back on dialup speeds compared to myrient.

>>12468721
Probably everyone who procrastinated realizing they have about a week left and are trying to jump in before it closes. Glad I finished downloading what I could a few days ago, even if I wished I could have gotten more. Not enough harddrives.

>>12469603
>Already maxed out my 4tb drive and i haven't even downloaded a single game yet.
With what? Anyway, better to download the non-game stuff, the games will be easy to find everywhere unless it's some of the most specialized or obscure stuff like TeknoParrot that are a broken mess all over archive. A lot of the stuff outside of console games under no-intro and redump is what's in danger of being lost.

>i bet you never even used a dialup bbs

I played a chd of Rayman once, and I swear to god, there was a seemingly undocumented glitch right in the first world where one electoon cage refused to appear. I figured I'd go back for it later and played the entire game getting every other cage and I couldn't figure out ehat I was doing wrong. Then on a whim I deleted my save and got another dump, dure enough I ended up spawning that cage. Cages, in case you don't know, are required to finish the game. Good thing the game also has a password system, so I just said screw it and looked up a skip to the final level.
All this to say, fuck CHDs.
>>
>>12469809
I think there are tricks to improve speeds. I remember when it was slow I used an app called 1.1.1.1 and then the archive DLs nearly used up my bandwidth
>>
>>12469816
That sounds like you changed your DNS server, which if you don't know what you're doing or trust the DNS service is a real bad idea to just use some random one that someone told you about. Granted, 1.1.1.1 is a well known one, assuming the app actually used that and not something else.
>>
>>12469815
how the fuck does that even happen i wonder? i'm not an expert on how compression works but I find it odd that anything going wrong with it would cause just one part of the game to be missing and not corrupt the whole thing or make it unplayable.

Vimm is no fucking secret, and it's organization is a joke compared to myrient. If you don't "get" what makes Myrient so special then read the posts in this very thread, people have mentioned unique files that are pretty much nowhere else. We aren't just talking about redump or no-intro sets. (And even then, good luck finding the big ones like TOSEC's DOS in one piece)

>>12474795
I never said it's a secret but the less these sites are mentioned by name the better
>>
>>12474795
>We aren't just talking about redump or no-intro sets.
Even among those, there's some Redump sets that I can't find anywhere else (at least not nearly as complete/up to date), like the video DVD and Blu-ray sets. They're mostly comprised of bonus discs that were bundled with games, or were given for pre-ordering them, or are just game-related in general. Others are there for having (or being entirely) DVD menu-based games, or for having PC (or even a few original Xbox and PS3) game demos also on the disc. There's some discs there that I can't find even a single mention of elsewhere on the Internet, such as "Cool Boarders 2001 - Boarding Pass (Canada)" and "Downhill Domination - Cinematics (Europe)".
>>
>>12474795
I'm ignorant because they are irrelevant
who the fuck cares about arcades, who even plays them
>>
>>12474924
It's hundreds of gigabytes of development materials spanning dozens of projects from decades of the company's history. "The only interesting thing was the batch with L-is-real" is a naive take. There were entire, finished, unreleased games unearthed. I doubt anything that exciting is left to find, but there are certainly tons of scrapped game assets that have been glossed over. I mean, people are still making new discoveries in retail releases that are have been available for decades longer and aren't nearly as dense.

>>12474987
Maybe I'm being overly optimistic about this, but presumably the people who made the dumps of uber obscure games like the ones you mention are aware that Myrient is shutting down and are looking to host them elsewhere.
>>
>>12475094
Outside of the obvious first party stuff like Yoshi's Island, there was also a mid development build of Super Castlevania IV in there with a lot of interesting differences, a mid development build of ChouMakaimura, a mid development build of SFC Goemon, plus a late build of the SFC port of Street Fighter II. Why Nintendo had these builds is anybody guess since they're clearly from before lotcheck submissions; maybe they were asking for Nintendo's opinion on them or Nintendo wanted to use them for marketing the SFC/SNES, but whatever the case, who knows what other protos of big 3rd party games could still be buried in there. While I'd think most anything would've been found by now, the attention span for these sorts of things has gotten really low in recent years (there's barely any documentation of the previously mentioned SCVIV proto, despite it being interesting and having a lot of differences) and the proto community has long since moved over to sperging out over other things, so I don't know if anybody is even still looking.

You are probably thinking of the Teraleak of 2024, which was all Game Freak stuff, the Gigaleak was in 2020 and was mostly Nintendo stuff in general, a LOT of crazy stuff was discovered in that about nearly every Nintendo franchise.

Nobody mentioning a site here is going to make a lick of difference. Myrient isn't even shutting down because it was known despite being advertised as the go-to site for roms everywhere, if it was the shutdown would have been immediate, not given a month warning. It's shutting down due to costs. This place could not be any less populated, and I assume you any site you know about is well known, likely more well known than Myrient. Everyone knows about placed like Vimm's or CDromance or Emuparadise, they are not a secret. And no, none of them hold a candle to Myrient.

Yeah, there is a shitload of non-game related content under redump and no-intro, such as those leaks (and even other leaks), HDD dumps from store kiosks, dev/testing software, etc. People thinking "I can just download Super Mario World from Vimm or Archive" are entirely missing the point, that's not what people are worried about being lost.

Does anyone know what happened to that other archive of myrient? The progress was displayed at myrient.org, but the github repo of the guy that made it, is now gone, and the page itself just says 0%. I assume that whoever made that tracker, just backed it up for himself and then disappeared, wasn't meaning to share. I don't have a lot of hope in minerva, was hoping someone else would step in.

What site will everyone use when it closes? What's even still around after the decades of shutdowns?

I've had a full set for the NES, SNES, 64, GB, GBC, and GBA for a long time, added other small systems like all of Sega's games for completeness and finished archiving all of PSX in the last month.

I haven't ever really looked around on the site much, but seeing that massive archive of PC games makes me feel overwhelmed. There's way too much there for me to grab a full "set" like consoles, unless I had a way to divide it by year or something. Can anyone recommend any PC games older than 2008 I should pick up? I'd like to grab anything that's original and pre-Steam just so I have a small repository of old PC games. It always feels great to have things to play that don't require an internet connection or modern DRM.
