So I never grew up with a lot of Nintendo stuff and have been playing some series I missed out on from them.
Personally I like the Kirby games way more than any Mario except for Galaxy (which I know isn't retro, just mentioning it as an example)
>>
Kirby games are easy but fun and entertaining.

So I had a friend bring up this whole easy thing, but I don't really get the point of even bringing that up since its not like the retro Mario titles I played were exactly hard or anything.
I personally had one friend explain it pretty well and I think its because I prefer more combat focus in games along with platforming on the side, which is why I seem to generally like games like Mega Man/Castlevania way more than Mario too.

However I do really like Donkey Kong Country when it comes to more platforming focus.

Kirby's Adventure is the best game in the series by a wide margin.
>>
>>12467906
Nah Super Star and Amazing Mirror are better, it is better than all the dreamland games though
>>
Best kirby imo is not retro and is the Wii collection, specifically the challenge mode stages. Its the only game in the series that fixes my biggest complaint with the games, and that is that the power ups and stages dont really mesh well together to the point you fully make use of them, which the challenge mode does do because each level is based around a specific power.

>Begged me mum incessantly to buy me Crystal Shards at like 10 years old.
>Played it
>Was insultingly bad
I literally feel shame just thinking about that game. I remember spending 30+ minutes to download a 10-sec clip of it from IGN on dial-up, I was so excited. I bothered my mom so much and it sucked SO hard.
Super Star is the only one worth playing if you're an adult.
I wouldn't say they're better than Mario games, most Kirbys are actually made for elementary school girls, but you do you.
>>
The thing about Superstar is that besides being a 10/10 vidya it's also prime gfcore
>>

I love that segment! And yes, it would be good for gf co-op.

sorry about your bad taste. 64 is kinocore

Aside from Super Mario World, Mario games are actually quite a lot harder than their reputation. It's more that everyone played them to death and know them inside out.

99% of zoomtards wouldnt be able to clear super mario 1 without continue code, world 8 in mario 3 without p wings and clouds, or the special stages in world. sunshine is surprisingly tough to 100% too. its just mario 64 and the non retro shit that makes people think its easy (aka the only mario games zoomies have played)

>my biggest complaint with the games, and that is that the power ups and stages dont really mesh well together to the point you fully make use of them
Bro what? The entire design philosophy of Kirby games is that you are introduced to a power-ups at the start of a stage and the rest of the stage is basically designed around making use of that power-up. You probably did something retarded like take your favorite power-up through all stages

I find platformer games incredibly boring. So even when Mario and Sonic which came as pack ins or my brother got, I would only ever play them occasionally and do one game till I ran out of lives and then ignore it for a week or two. As such I never even came close to beating most of them. Even when I first had my Genesis and 3 games, I've only ever made it past stage 2 of Sonic a handful of times . Kirby's Dreamland and Mario 2 were the ones that even with zero practice or interest I could pretty easily beat any time I did boot them up and with Dreamland I would always do the extra challenge mode because even that was bonkers easy.
>>
>>12468531
>mario 2
not mario, not mainline, not canon
>>
>>12468542
Obviously. It came out here as Mario 2, that's all I'll ever consider it.
>>
>>12468348
I mean I'm a zoomer and again I am playing them all now because where I grew up which is Eastern Europe we actually have had very little exposure to Nintendo historically. And as an adult without having memorized a lot I didn't really feel much of a difference between for example Mario 3 and World, difficulty wise. Funnily enough this one castle in World pissed me off more because I didn't find a checkpoint the first time.

However, it might be that I am more accustomed to difficulty and I feel like it doesn't play as much of a factor to me because I simply prefer the gameplay loop of Kirby a bit more.

(Me) Also I have done everything possible to hard code save states out of RetroArch with both quick menu visibility and editing the actual configuration files, so I play every game trying to replicate as close to the hardware that I can.
>>
>>12468779
Just don't use the savestates?
If you're looking at Retrofart menus all the time, that's not replicating the original hardware experience.
>>
>>12468468
I've mated with my gf playing Kirby co-op with her often so I can vouch it's a useful genre name, in contrast the one time we played Doom together she wouldn't touch me for weeks.
>>
>>12468807
I did it more so to avoid the urge and take it completely out of the emulator as a functionality.
Like if you have that level of self-control ok, but sometimes on a busy day if the temptation is there it can be hard to fight back and I'd rather not have it at all. I've enjoyed retro gaming way more since doing it.

Yes the kirby snes games are great, really nice artwork and music, cool game mechanics and levels/UI.
They're a really nice changeup from the typical snes games like Mario / Donkey Kong

Kirby 64 did a really good job carrying that style over to 3D, fits right in with the snes games.

>>12467890
Kirby is a guilty pleasure. Obscenely easy but I still keep playing them. Squeak Squad was a little challenging.
>>
>>12468520
Not really. Yeah there are usually basic elements like "ramps for wheel" or "lite this cannon", but they dont really explore the full depth of each ability and mastery of it, especially when the move sets became more elaborate. Also the fact that you can lose an ability and then will usually grab something new right away doesn't give you long with each. Atleast with the challenge mode in the collection it makes things focused on only one at a time so you can appreciate everything you can do with it.

The music track from that one that was in Brawl was 10/10

Adventure always felt very polished but a bit bland. I prefer Kirby 64 for sure. Still need to play Super Star tho

>>
>>12467975
I love 64, but the game moves so much slower than adventure and super star. It gets carried hard by its charm and power fusions. Superstar and Adventure just feel better to control
