Why doesn't anyone talk about how fucked up it is that Nintendo sold this and Mario & Luigi as normal Mario games on store shelves? Imagine buying Paper Mario expecting Mario 64 2 and getting some slow-burn Dragon Quest-like instead. Millions bought this because they saw the Mario name and they didn't get what they bought for
>>12468562They shouldve looked in the back and learn to read I guess
>>12468562can you explain to me whats so funny about this? I dont really understand why you posted
>>12468569>>12468573Hi zoomers. Back then you couldn't just look up a trailer. "Mario" as a brand of platformers had been consistent for ten years, and besides Pokémon the target market of the Mario brand hadn't even been introduced to JRPGs.
>>12468580No I understand what point you were stating in the OP I am just wondering what about this was funny enough to post because we all know you arent being genuine so you must be trolling, but I dont see the humor. Does your blood pressure spike when someone starts arguing with you or something?
>>12468580There is literally a screenshot of the combat behind the box. Not the japs fault amerimutts are too retarded to 1+1
There were already plenty of popular and well beloved Mario games with non-platforming gameplay, so it was not a given that buying a Mario game meant straightforward 2D platforming. I was not disappointed in the slightest to find that this was not like classic SMB, I just thought "oh it plays like Pokemon or Final Fantasy" and that was that. There's also the fact that the back of the box says "turn based battle system" and describes the gameplay in very obviously RPG'ish terms.
Its working title was Super Mario RPG 2, I remember reading in magazines back then
>>12468651The japanese title is Paper Mario RPG
>>12468562This never happened.>>12468625>amerimutts are too retarded to 1+1Obsessed third worlder.>>12468651This was the case and there was already Super Mario RPG. OP continues to suck dicks on a hourly basis.
>>12468690I'm willing to wager three fourths of kids who got into Mario RPG/Paper/&Luigi bought the game because they thought it would be a platformer
Kids play anything you show them - they're easily impressionable.I played a bunch of shitty flash games back in my day and was happily content with it.Paper mario is an awesome game for a kid. Tons of learning opportunities and it's colorful and fosters imagination.Much better than playing fucking bartender in a shitty soft drinks company advertisement barebones ""game"" while there's a fucking porn site advert on the right.
>>12468702And you're basing this off of what?
>>12468562>Why doesn't anyone talk about how fucked up it is that Nintendo sold this and Mario & Luigi as normal Mario games on store shelves?Everyone knew what it was, what are you talking about? That's like asking why no one talks about how fucked it was that Dr. Mario was sold as a normal Mario game.
imagine my disappointment when I got mario kart 64 for christmas one year, only to pop it in the 64 and realize to my horror that it wasnt a 2d sidescroller.
>>12468580You sound like you would not be born for many years. This literally never happened. No one would buy a $60 game without at least reading the back of the box.
>>12468562You can always look at the back of the box to see how the game plays. Also the platforming Marios are almost always called super Mario.
I'm willing to wager three fourths of kids who got into Paper Mario bought the game because they knew it was the quintessential 2.5D scotsformer-adjacent jarpig
Extremely retarded thread about something that never happened. OP is a fag.
>>12468580I’ll engage with a troll post seriously for a second, just to say nothing has changed all that much. You still have the option to do as much or as little research as you want before you buy a game. The internet actually existed when Paper Mario released, but back then advertisement, magazines and talking to friends or the guy at the store played a bit more of a part. I bought a few games because I liked the name or the box art (or even the license), but of course that’s on me.>>12468724For a second I thought you were talking shit about Budweiser / Root Beer Tapper
>>12468562i literally remember this happening to me. i was pissed. turned it off within minutes, seconds maybe.
By the way, the faggot that is OP forgot TV ads were a thing and Paper Mario had its own. These trolling threads are so retarded that by pretending to be stupid, OP became really stupid. This shit is not even funny.
>>12468580the internet, gaming magazines, official sites, forums all existed by then you fucking retard
>>12469165>>12469175>bro just be 20 years old and have a personal computer or spend money on video game journalismthe employee wouldn't tell you because he would want the stupid kid to see Mario and buy it so his sales numbers would be higher and keep his job. >>12468764Racing games are a huge genre so it's much more obvious
>>12468580Hi actual zoomer. There was a thing known as commercials, flyer ads, magazines, word of mouth and asking store employeesquestions.Plus the fact Super Mario RPG already existed as something to reference.
>>12469135I was thinking about shit like this. Mostly from pepsi and coke. I fucking hate those things now, but that was all i had.Thankfully, ZNES saved the day. And later, snes9x. Lord knows how long i could have endured this nightmare.Even to this day, i often pass up soft drinks. And i am very contemptuous towards advertisement.
>>12469175>>12469165you guys clearly didn't rent games, lmao.that's not how it happened.we went to the game store and just browsed games by looking at the box covers, there was no pre-planning or looking stuff up beforehand. if the cover looked interesting, you'd pick up the box and look at the screenshots 99% of the time not even attempting to read the text. we were kids, we weren't reading magazines or paying attention to commercials which few games even had.
>>12469226I did fag, and I rented Paper Mario knowing beforehand thanks to the mags and ads, even I paid the extra fee to keep it for a few days to finish it. Don't go with the "we" argument, I read game mags all day at that period, so if I wanted an specific game is because of that information. Only rented shit at blind out of curiosity a few times.
>>12468562Yeah it's kinda fucked up that they just sold this as another generic Mario game only to find out you're playing one of the greatest games of all time
>>12469259>rented shit at blind out of curiositythat was the fun part for me, not knowing exactly what i would get. most of the time it worked out, i had been doing it that way since the snes though, all the way up to ps2.
>>12468562That game had commercials. You guys makeup a bunch of shit up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7xIrt2fIeA.
>>12469264but enough about TTYD
>>12469264>Aww man, i could've gotten a buggy, floaty mess smeared with sewage sludge graphics. But instead i got a very good game. Fucking hell. How am i going to find things to bitch about in the future?
>>12469290Not retro. Take your contrarian ass back to /v/ kid.
>>12468562I was alive back then and everyone knew this was the spiritual successor to Super Mario RPG that was released on the SNES.It was in every TV and magazine Ad for the game.Nintendo Power and GamePro made sure you knew exactly what you were getting. The only person who would fuck up would be parents, grandparents, and older relatives who would see this and buy it instead of Mario 64 or Mario Party.Which wouldn’t happen because what those people would do would be to buy the “cheaper” one because they figure it’s all the same “bing bang wahoo” right?
>>12469312>not retroyes it is, as per rules on this board>contrarianthat would be you, vast majority agrees TTYD is far superior.
>>12469351You are not the majority. Your remake didn't even make it past 2 mil. Go back to /v/ kid.
Troll thread but what OP is alluding to actually happened with Super Paper Mario. It was a combination of factors: early Wii game with a bunch of ultracasuals around who only knew the classic Mario platfomers and NSMB; gameplay shift with departure from turn based battles that made it look like a 2D platformer; and deceptive title with Super on the front like a mainline game. All of this resulted in a bunch of Wii grandmas buying SPM expecting another NSMB and not understanding WTF they were playing, and this backlash led to the series getting destroyed with Sticker Star and its successors.
>>12468580nintendo power and the commercials made it clear what we were getting. There was no controversy when this game came out. Not to mention we had rental stores back then so most people tried the game before they bought it, if they did. This thread is dumb and useless.
>>12469851is that fucking true?? legion, explain
>>12469226>I was stupid and lazy as a kid so I assume everyone else was tooOkay lol
>>12469795and yours got completely skipped over and got no remake at all you fucking retard lmao
>>12469851Citation please
Kids were pretty much trained to read the back of the box. If you were renting games or movies every weekend, that's how you determined what you'd get. It was a different era, OP. Hell, Blockbuster would even have hints and cheats printed on some of the cases, I believe.Barring that, gaming magazines were still popular. Some were just industry hype and reviews, but others had actual gameplay guides and cheat sections. You would usually have a decent idea of whether or not an upcoming game was up your alley before it came out. If it was something obscure, then it was a bit of a gamble. It was interesting, in that way.
>>12469932Were purchased cartridge games returnable to a store? I know because of piracy most stores didn't offer refunds with CD games.
>>12469939Yes, but usually just for exchanges or store credit rather than a refund.
>>12469939>>12469947What he said. Store credit, usually. Some places were more lenient back then. Also keep in mind that for the most part, in the US at least, kids back then got games pretty much on just their birthday, or around Christmas. If you had an allowance or mowed yards and shit, you could save up and buy your own. You were kind of at the mercy of your parents if you were still a little gremlin. You didn't return games if they sucked, you just played them. Hell, you may not have even realized they were ass at the time. Kids have low standards.
>>12469281Amazing commercial.
>>12469851This.
>>12468580>Mario" as a brand of platformers had been consistent for ten yearsLet's pretend Mario Kart, Super Mario RPG, Mario Tennis, Mario Party, and Mario is Missing didn't exist, I guess.
>>12469893not just me, that's how every friend and family member i knew rented games as well. no one i knew read gaming magazines or looked up games before going to the movie store. we were busy playing outside with neighborhood friends and having epic sleepovers. zoomers wouldn't understand.
>>12470501Plenty of kids I knew would have gaming mags, but not necessarily read them. They'd maybe look at the cheat code section, or buy a mag for a game they just got. Sometimes they'd buy them to have movelists for fighting games, or to jack-off to random game girls. I was just a kid who liked to read.
>>12468580this is a situation you made up in your head just to shitpost on a tibetian sheep herding forum
>>12470501I'm gen x. You just sound stupid to me, sorry.
I think the reason Dragon Quest didn't take off here despite Nintendo's efforts is because it looked like a Zelda game, then you play it, and it's boring menu simulators. So people felt scammedOther RPG's did manage to fine their niches, but Nintendo really tried to shill DQ. And remember that RPG's still remained niche for years
>>12468562bullshitI wanted Paper Mario as a kid so bad knowing it was an RPG style, every other kid did too which is why it was always gone at the rental store and copies were sold out in stores always
>>12469204>>12469226I was born in 1990. I wrote Nintendo Power an email a month before they first published their Paper Mario issue asking for a sequel to SMRPG and they told me to keep an eye out on next months issue. Everyone knew what this game was before they played it, or they just read the box while their parents were browsing the movie rentals at Blockbuster. Not my fault you were too retarded or poor to have internet. Probably a fucking retarded turd worlder shitposting from your favela hut right now. Hope you get smoked by a car bomb. Retarded thread and I hope you fucking kys
I saw pictures of this game and the commercial on TV and I begged my grandmother for it.
>what are screenshots and blurbs on the back of the box>what is vidya news in actual print or on the internetUnless it was the case of your mother bought this for you out of the blue, you knew it was going to be an rpg. I played Mario and luigi as a kid and liked it quite a bit.
>>12468580Hey retard, you had nintendo power cover the game, you had IGN cover the game, if you could actually fucking read, you would fucking know. Don't give me this shit that only tells me that you can't fucking read.
>>12471149Yeah Nintendo probably correctly calculated that a story based game with a bunch of dialogue would be mostly played by kids who had actually been taught to read. They clearly over estimated the American schooling system though.
>>12471176Said publications also had pretty pictures of the game to look at, and just about every kid was playing pokemon anyways, not every burger child was an illiterate retard like you.
>>12471176Paper Mario is such a simple RPG, you could literally get by without much reading, besides basic shit. Anyone in a first grade reading level can basically skim through it, if even that. Same with Pokemon.
>>12470501I played outside and read gaming magazines at school. Some of us werent illiterate
>>12470671I think its because DQ is simply not a good game. FF didn't have that issue
>>12468562Nobody ever thought that
>>12471402Not American and it came out in my 20's I'm mocking kids who bought a story based game when they couldn't read
>>12471495It's babby's first RPG, not war and peace
My friends mom bought him Dr Mario, assuming it was a Mario game and not a puzzle game. Turns out he and his mom both really enjoyed playing it together.
>>12468580I know what you mean. Halo wars confused the fuck out of a lot of people
>>12469851This guy knows what's upbut not retro
>>12471408I beat FF7 as a kid without knowing any english, lmaoOnly real roadblock was this boss, until I understood how to equip materia
>>12468580we already knew to be cautious because of like dr mario and mario teaches typing type of experiences
>>12470670>sorry.typical gen x, you should be sorry.
>>12471118lmfao.yes, i usually descend into a rage spiral when i'm right too.
>>12471852I know I should, but I'm not. >>12471496Which makes some child bitching that the text was too much for them even worse.
>>12471964No one bitched about the text in Paper Mario, much like no one bitched about the amount of text in pokemon.
>>12471964>some child bitching that the text was too much for them even worse. No child ever did this, you made this up in your mind
>>12472083I didn't make it up. That's what this fucking bullshit thread is about. OP is the one spamming the board about how fucking stupid he was. I don't want any of this.
>>12472154Ah, OP just being a fag as usual
>>12468580>Back then you couldn't just look up a trailer.>Paper Mario>First Released NA: February 5, 2001Yes, you could. And anyway, that anon said "look at the back of the box". So you're just double stupid.
>>12469226>we went to the game store and just browsed games by looking at the box covers, there was no pre-planning or looking stuff up beforehand. You did, because you were a filthy casualfag. I did not because I read video game magazines, talked to other kids about games, watched video shows and commercials, and had general knowledge of video gaming. >we were kids, we weren't reading magazines or paying attention to commercials which few games even had.We weren't all ignorant little shits like you
>>12472201What gave you the impression I am the OP? Are you illiterate?
>>12472285I didn't say you were OP
>>12468562because they liked it
>>12468562I picked this up off the shelf in a Toys R Us back when it was new having absolutely no idea what it was but I liked the visual style on the box. Got a fantastic game but admittedly as a dumbass kid I wound up bumbling around a fair bit. Getting an unexpected genre wasn't a bad thing so long as the game itself was good.>>12471408Huh? Paper Mario has plenty of weird esoteric shit in its progression, you would have absolutely no idea what to do as early as Chapter 2 if you couldn't read because of locating Dry Dry Ruins. Let alone Chapter 4 where you have to wait with Bow.
