>now here's how atari could have won...

Would have been possible to make a six button single player controller that used both controller ports.

Just use a master system controller

Imagine there's no atari

Actually you can have up to 3 buttons on any atari controller. The paddle controller inputs can be converted to be used as separate buttons. Sadly is pointless if the game isnt programmed to recognize this. Thats why theres only 80 games available for Joy2b+

i think those don't work because of some electrical incompatibility

if you cut the 5V line in sega controllers (SMS or Sega Genesis) it becomes compatible with atari systems

2600: One button!
5200: 17 buttons!
7800: Two buttons!
Jaguar: 16 buttons!

Atari never could get the hang of designing a controller could they? You can defend the 2600 was it was the first Gen 2 console and nobody knew what to do back then, but by 1993 they had no excuse with that Jaguar controller to jut jam a numberpad in it again like some 70s era console where controller design was still a wild west.

They even pulled the same bullshit with the 5200 by having duplicate buttons with the Jaguar Pro controller, despite labeling them as if they were different buttons.
