I'm in my 40s which means I'm in the middle of my retrogaming arc. The conclusion of it would obviously be building an arcade cabinet.I'm liking modern ones with flat screens like picrel because they're less than 50cm deep and I can fit one in my europoor cuckflat. The main issue is this fucking hardware shortage>raspberry pis go for 200€+>the same beelink mini-pc I got last november for 175€ now goes for 420€>not sure I can fit a regular mobo+PSU in the cabinet, and I don't want it to pull 200WI just want something that can run ppsspp at a decent framerate and doesn't cost more than the cabinet itself
Go find a buisness PC at a flea market or thrift store, that's your best bet. Good luck though.
I'm almost 34 and I've basically been in my retrogaming arc since my brother taught me about emulators when I was like, 6.A lot of those games weren't old back then, but I just kept checking out ROMs ever since, as they're free and some of them are good as fuck.>the same beelink mini-pc I got last november for 175€ now goes for 420€We're in bullshit times. I'm vaguely in the same boat, I'm saving up because I plain need a new computer. My faint prayer is that RAM prices will finally begin going down as I put more into savings.Absolutely dreading the idea of Win11 tho, I'll have to try to avoid it one way or another.I'll second to look for some used PC like the other guy said. What motif would you have on it, a stock one like in the image, or something else?
>>12471249No such thing around here. Might have to look at ebay>>12471270>What motif would you have on itNot sure yet, there are many manufacturers each with a lot of stock vynils.>Absolutely dreading the idea of Win11 Yes I will run retropie on it, with all its pros and cons. No microsoft shit
>>12471270Get linux mint. EZ mode
>>12471217I built a similar arcade cabinet and it just collects dust. Its something I had more fun building than actually playing.
>pc>for arcadeJust get a jamma multicart if you can hook it up to your monitor. Mine has a VGA output.
>>12471387How many favorite arcade games do you have, like ones you'd gladly go back to? How much do you like arcade games in general?I think for most people, emulators and ports are fine, but some people really do fucking love these enough that a cabinet is worth it. Usually a generic emulator cabinet with lots of games. If he gets sick of the thing, he could plain sell it to someone who doesn't wanna bother building his own.
>>12471387I had a goal in mind when I built mine: light gun games. Something that you can't so easily emulate on a modern monitor, and actually need to stand up to play. It's has a self-curated MAME set on it, too, just to give me the option to play other things like fighters and shmups.
>>12471404Nah I want to play nes/snes/gba stuff and maybe psp as mentioned in the OP. I spent a lot of time making nintendo curated rom sets. The only mame stuff I play is Cave shmups>>12471387Yes the fun in building it is the main point. Also because I spend all my day in front of the pc for work, so I can't bring myself to also game on it, having a separate game device in a different room would be nice. The other reason is to play some coop games with my son
>>12471457I mostly play fighting games and a few shmups. I also have arcade sticks and a CRT. Typically I just end up paying whatever fighting game on my CRT. If I had the money and space I would rather own a Astro City Candy Cab. But seems kinda redundant since I have a really large 27in CRT and a decent arcade stick and a Mister hooked up to the CRT. I always see people in my area selling modified Atomiswave cabinets with CRTs. (Pic related)
>>12471497>playing gba on an arcade cabinetYou're retarded.
>>12471543no different than playing on this
>>12471217>I'm liking modern ones with flat screens like picrel because they're less than 50cm deep and I can fit one in my europoor cuckflat. This is a nonsensical thing to say. Even if you have a small living space the amount of extra space taken up by a cabinet with a CRT is negligible compared to the one in your image. You'll lose about a square meter. And in return have one of most importart parts of the experience, the image, actually look right.
>>12471543Why not?
>>12471471That'd one make perhaps the most sense to me.
>>12471543It'd be kinda weird, but it'd work.
>>12471217Depending on what games you want to play, a MiSTer might actually be the best option simply for the fact that you won't have to deal with MAME. It's easy to set up, easy to maintain, and works well. But if you're trying to do this for as cheap as possible than you should just get a raspberry pi.
>>12472381Thanks, I will have a look. I think you're underestimating how much a raspberry costs these days
>>12472469It depends on which model you get. If you're just going to be playing a bunch of old arcade games than a pi3b is probably enough, or maybe even a zero 2.
>>12471217Depends on what you want to play. Raspberry Pis are too expensive to seriously consider these days. Typically you can just grab an old enterprise PC (dell optiplex, hp g4, lenovo thinkcentre, etc.) and emulate everything you want. I ultimately settled with a beelink ser8 because I wanted to play more modern PC games on it, but that's a bit overkill if you just want to emulate retro arcade games.
>>12472495Nah, if I'm going to build a cabinet I'm not gonna put a raspberry in it. I want it to at least run GC virtua striker comfortably. I have a 3b+ inside this toy I built last year (picrel) and it doesn't run ppsspp. But my 4yo son is having a blast playing NES kirby on it.>>12472516Thanks. Yes that's what I'm looking for at the moment. Ive found some sweet deals on hp elitedesk minis for less tha 150€. I'll try to get one with a ryzen. I'm looking for something I can hook to the vesa mount because the space in these things is limited
>>12472519I wish my dad could build game machines.
>>12472532teach your dad how to teach you
>>12472532It's not rocket science, it basically boils down to having a cup drill and buying parts on aliexpressThe hard part is fitting everything inside the boxYou can become the dad you wanted I believe in you
>>12471217Go on Facebook marketplace and find someone selling an ex-office mini PC. Usually you can get one for the price of a Mcdonalds meal.
>>12472580My dad IS an electrician, but he's also a very autistic and elderly lumberjack.I'm fine with emulation.>>12472634Well, maybe.
>>12472519Anon, if you know this forgive me, but when you say virtua striker on gc (as in virtua striker 3 ver. 2002), have you ever looked into the triforce version of virtua striker 2002?Try them all out honestly. I've recently played all of these:Virtua striker 3 ver 2002 (gcn) Virtua striker 3 (arcade naomi 2)Virtua striker 2002 (arcade triforce) Virtua striker 4 ver. 2006 (arcade triforce) I found VS 2002 was very interesting, it controls WAY better than the gamecube version (or the naomi 2 version of 3). It's like a spruced up port of the Dreamcast game with better graphics. I'm pretty sure it was done by the members of either vs2 or the port team of vs2 to the dreamcast, while the other team were trying different things (like added a dash button)
