/vr/ - How would you rank them? - Retro Games

RGBY > RSE > GSC > FRLG

RGBY is my favorite Pokemon game/era because it's the most succinct. When I play later Pokemon games I find myself losing interest before I finish them. RGBY gives you that same experience over a shorter time frame.
RSE has a lot of variation in environments and great little setpieces.
GSC is longer than RBGY but doesn't do a whole lot better than it in my opinion.
FRLG feels like an overall downgrade from RGBY to me, and I think they're very skippable.

Of the /vr/ approved generations I'd be most inclined to replay Emerald or Red/Blue. Crystal is nice and all but I'd really rather play HGSS. FRLG are alright but I feel like their only real advantage is connectivity with later gens but who cares in [current year]?

Crystal > Emerald > Ruby/Sapphire > RGBY = FRLG > Gold/Silver

Choice between Gen I and remakes really depends on what is more important for you. Gen I had better aesthetics and atmosphere while obviously FRLG are more polished and modern.

Also a lot depends on exclusives - Crystal is objectively better than Gold and Crystal, but if you really care about Mareep, for example... Personally I don't think that any of these games are bad, it's just that some of them are just pointless.

Yellow is the only 3rd version I don't care for. If I'm playing Gen 1 I want all the goofy looking designs. Getting all the starters was cool as a kid, but now I would rather use pokemon I haven't before.
