Which monster hunter games count as retro in 2026?
On /vr/ you will only get to talk about the PS2 games.Among the monster hunter players, probably the PS2, PSP and 3DS titles.
>>12474081Just the ps2 games which no one has played or talks about. Monhun is spiritually a 7th gen and on series.
>>12474081Monster Hunter 1 is plenty. It's still one of the greatest games ever made and the original control scheme is sublime. It's move to the PSP when they dropped it because of the shitty design factor of the system is still one of the worst things to happen to the series. >>12474115I literally broke the clock at 999 hours in Monster Hunter at least a good six months before I finally finished. Up until Generations Ultimate it was one of my favorite series ever.
Personally I would rather befriend the monsters. Not like in Pokémon though, I want them to be big and cool-looking and not so cartoony. But still my friends
read the board rules
>>12474198What would you even do in the game at that point? Harvest Moon with dragons in the background?
>>12475202Well, maybe you'd fight a minority of them (with help from your monster friends). The targets could be invasive species or demonically tainted supermonsters or something. It could still be mainly a game about fighting.
>>12475928That sounds like Monster Hunter reworked for 10 year olds.
>>12475994MonHun is a franchise for Japanese 10 year olds to play on the train and during recess. The portable games at least.
>>12476008You've clearly never played it.
PS2 games released before 2008
>>12474198Not /vr/ but there's the Monster Hunter Stories serie, although it plays like a paper/rock/scissors RPG instead of an action one
>>12476596Monster Hunter, especially the first one which is the only game to really be talked about here is not an RPG at all. It's a boss fighting action game with weapon and armor crafting.
>>12474081None of them? Retro doesn't mean "old," it is the style and manner of games which were prevalent before mature 3D gameplay norms, aka "modern" gaming.
>>12476693If you want to get technical with precise definitions, pretty much all the games we are allowed to talk about here are old, not retro. Ninja Gaiden is an old game, not a retro one. Dark Void Zero is retro.
>>12474163>999 hoursThat is honestly a concerning level of autism. Did you master all weapons? There weren't even that many in MH1.
>>12476860>That is honestly a concerning level of autismPeople who play monhun are genuinely mentally retarded. It's about comforting repetition, not challenge. It's like japanese call of duty.
>>12476860It sure is, I dislike a lot of stuff but when I find things I like, I really like them and the first Monster Hunter is amazing in my books. I put somewhere between 400 - 800 hours into pretty much every entry until Generations Ultimate. World, Rise and the newer ones don't do it for me. And yes, I used all the weapons, though greatsword has always been my favorite. Even without online anymore the base game of MH1 is still pretty great and nothing else has it's control scheme which is part of what really makes it shine.
>>12476885The difficulty is most of the appeal. Very few series have the level of challenge of fighting a monster that can kill you in seconds if you slip up and having to keep that up for a long time. I had to go out of my way in Dragon's Dogma to recreate that kind of thing.
>>12476885Roguelikes, fighting games against good opponents and puzzlers like Puyo keep me going for ages, meanwhile even as a kid Mario and Zelda almost literally put me to sleep. Ohh yeah and Ecco the Dolphin is one of my favorite games of all time. I'm that smug asshole.
>>12476886These play times are reasonable, my playtime in these games is about the same, even more in G Ult/XX. But more than 999 hours in MH1 alone is crazy.
>>12476909A lot of that 999 hours was online with my friends and plate hunting. You needed so many damn Rathalos plates for just about all the end game equipment and they were only from tail carves with a 1% chance. So even when we would go in with one headlocking and then one or a couple people going for the tail it was still really time consuming. MH was a whole community then though so even with everything it was still fun to log on and help folks who wanted it. PSO was a similar thing. I also spent an embarrassing amount of time in Ragnarok Online, but met people who are still friends to this day.
