It's almost a perfect platformer

Rayman became popular for it's godtier art and cd quality music on the PSX port. It was widely hated for its platforming on that console.
The original Jaguar release actually had some great platforming, even if the art and music were objectively worse than its future ports. They changed enemy positioning, environmental hazards, and entire platforming segments with later releases.
Then there's the whole JP vs Rest of the World with the ports. There were additional changes made based on region.
It's a mess.

Gex is better.

It was hated because it actually has a shred of difficulty which to platformers fans is the worst sin a game can commit.

I tracked down lot's of Rayman reviews from when it was released in a previous thread and they were all positive.
I'm going to go with what the next post said. FYI I only found a single review that complained about the difficulty, everyone else said the difficulty was either a good thing, or nothing special.

Never played the Jaguar version but I hated the PS1 port. I did listen to the shit out of the soundtrack as a kid though, it was one of those PS1 games that let you listen to the OST in a CD player.

I played the Rayman Redemption fangame recently though and enjoyed it. It's been years since I played the original so I don't know how faithful of a remake it is though

the physics of rayman redemption feel "off" to me, and i'm honestly personally not a fan of the donutsteel levels and enemies either

>Rayman Redemption
The last levels (the new ones) had a ridiculous difficulty spike though to the point if I ever play it again I will choose the infinite life mode
>>
>>12475901
I did play on infinite life mode so the later levels didn't really bother me

pathetic

Rayman 1 is nice but it has a lot of "gotcha!" moments that reward memorization over reaction/skill. The life system is incredibly dumb and tedious. When I played, I did the 99 lives cheat code and didn't feel guilty about it. Devs' poor game development philosophies shouldn't be my punishment to suffer.

Game basically requires you to grind lives or savescum by the moment you reach picture city. Yeah, its dumb. Especially since levels can be long as fuck. If you god forbid ever reach your last continue you are stuck with 3 lives for levels that may be 30 minutes.

Fuck Rayman, I hate him

>hated the best port
lol why?

You've never beat the game and I doubt you ever tried

The difficulty is outrageous by the end and the only plausible way to do it to use the infinite lives cheat. I doubt there's more than 5 people on the entire planet autistic enough to have beat the game legitimately using the regular continue system

But feel free to post a playthrough on youtube where you plow through this "easy" game to show us how it's all done. You know, since that's totally a thing you did and could do again. Faggot

It would unironically be good if the camera was zoomed out a bit and if there were event indicators. Shit just appears out of nowhere and you have to poke around to find invisible triggers and take leaps of faith. Overall the level design is pretty shit but the visuals and music are fucking 10/10.

I mean technically the PC version is somewhat easy to mod and PS1 decompilation projects prove that you can easily mod PS1 games as well. If you want to you can make a "perfect" Rayman 1 game by fixing issues you have with either the PC or PS1 version.

they fucked with the physics without altering the level design which made a lot of the game way harder than it was originally
