and the strange thing is that i like it quite a bit more than Doom I & II. it is hard to explain but i think it's a lot less overwhelming and doesn't feel as janky. plus i was never really a fan of the sci-fi elements in Doom. am i retarded or something? because nobody online (much less other 20yo zoomzooms) gives a shit about it anymore.
>>12475607>Paying for ROMs, plus taxOh dear
>>12475607It's definitely more one-note, which is why you find it less overwhelming, but if you like that note, then it's still consistently engaging because you need full concentration at all times. A shot from behind can take away over half your health in one go, so you gotta keep your head on a swivel and be ready to move out of the way. I actually find it more engaging that way than being some super soldier at 200 HP and 200 armor. It's precisely because of its raw simplicity that it's a whole different experience compared to FPS games that came later, right down to the movement and its 1:1 instantaneous deceleration. It's weird that it hasn't gotten any love in the form of an official QoL port, something like modern resolutions, framerates, and an automap.
>Paying money for a 34 year old gameAnyway, I see no jank in Doom compared to Wolf3D, and Doom is just a better game, however, Wolf3D is still a FUN little game, it sold well not just because of novelty, but because it was simply a good time.In some aspects, it can get faster paced than Doom (retail Doom, anyway).I'd say that the main problem with Wolf3D though is that with the expansions, it becomes way too long for its own good, because it doesn't really add much new after Episode 3, so with Nocturnal Missions you get a very mixed bag where you do more of the same for 30 more levels, only it they make levels annoying at times to try to keep it fresh.Spear Of Destiny is only 20 more levels, with a bossfight every 5th, along with a more novel final boss level, so I think it's a much better follow on to the original three episodes.Return To Danger was the two expansion packs to Spear Of Destiny by FormGen (yes, expansion packs to an expansion pack), and these... exist, but they're not a very good time. They reskin the game some and do all new levels, but each of the 20+20 levels are pretty shit and janky. Not strongly recommended unless you actually are a truly diehard Wolfer, in which case, sure, check those out too, get the full experience, but it's gonna get rough and unfun.Like Doom, Wolf3D also had its modding and mapping scene, and while it wasn't ever as fleshed out for the most part (less complete of a framework to operate with as a modder compared to Doom 2), there's cool stuff there which is worth checking out for the true enthusiasts. People eventually did cool and advanced sourceport shit for this game too.
>>12475674>I actually find it more engaging that way than being some super soldier at 200 HP and 200 armor.I agree with the rest of your post, though getting fully maxed health and armor in Doom is typically because you're soon getting put through the ringer and need to be able to survive taking at least some hits from stronger and meaner monsters.Wolf3D has much more sophisticated hitscan behavior, but it doesn't really have much of what Doom 2's bestiary can offer, nor in nearly as complex and varied terrain, or with as complex traps and ambushes.
It's almost weird that the Mutant Troopers in Wolf3D aren't imitated by people tor Doom modding and mapping, a sneaky monster which NEVER announces its pressnce is a role that game lacks.Granted, Wolf3D uses them often, and sometimes very obnoxiously, but I think it's a neat and useful ememy role.Speaking of mutants, the Ubermutant boss actually DOES do melee damage as part of his attack sequence, but it's just that you'd never willingly let him get that close, and/or he'll already chew you up into little pieces anyway with his big Gatling gun if you're just a few feet away from him.
>>12476149Those times where you're in one of those winding close-quarters mazes, and you're not entirely sure if you alerted one of them in the distance or not...One of the worst feelings not knowing if you're gonna be red-screen jumpscared from behind at any moment. It's hard to explain unless you played through the game, but there are moments like that where you pass at a certain angle that's juuuust enough to alert some far away mutant without you knowing. It fucks you up mentally for the rest of the game when it happens.
>>12476156They'll also fuck with you by putting enemies in the exit elevators sometimes, just to catch you off guard. It gets to the point where you'll pre-fire it after opening the exit every single time. Feels good when you expect it and get to be like, "Yeah, fuck you bitch." and turn that control switch to the next level. Pic related is one of my favorites because they put those barrels there so you can't back up easily when you open the door. Gotta respect the gamesmanship.
>>12476156Haha, yeah, mutants are the biggest dicks.>>12476173I should probably do that the next time I play Wolf3D.
