Ys or Dragon Quest?
Which one is better to get into?

Dragon Quest

Ys for the extravagant elegance of bump combat.

I would play Ys more when you want a heavy action game. For the most part the ones I've played are very heavy on action and light on RPG elements to the point where mentally I don't really consider them RPGs all that much, but are amazing games, I especially love Oath in Felghana and Origin.

As for Dragon Quest, I recently played my first one it being DQV and its 100% one of the best RPG experiences I've had, but can only speak for that one. It basically is the first game I have seen properly let you play through the MC's life from childhood to adulthood.

depends on what you want, Turd Based Slop or ARPGarbage slop

Ys is way easier to get into and the games are way shorter. Do you want a simple but challenging action RPG that's about 15 hours on average at most? Or a way slower paced, sprawling epic turn based rpg that's 5x longer at least?

So what’s not slop?

RtwP is the only non-slop genre of RPG's

Chads don't fight against one another.

Dragon Quest is the game that built the JRPG mould, along with Ultima Exodus's Famicom port. Pretty much DQ nails having an interconnected overworld you can navigate better as your character grows, and DQ2 makes that character into several characters, giving us the basic jrpg party. Both don't feel as archaic as they look and can be enjoyed today provided you're not expecting modern conveniences.

Ys wanted to make the rpg simpler and arcadier to the layman while giving them great presentation/music throughout. Bump combat is fun and the only issue is level scaling - you need to hit certain thresholds or certain bosses are never losing hp before you die. To be fair, Ys 1 is a lot like DQ1 - far shorter and a taster of the main course that is 2, but the first third of a whole the longer second games complete.
