WHY IS EVERY DUNGEON A TELEPORTER MAZE I FUCKING HATE THIS GAME
only IV is good and even then it would be like the 20th best rpg on the snes
It's fun
>someone dies>replace them with a cloneYou ever realize how fucked up that is?
>>12477668the first game is pretty cool if you like dungeon crawlers
>>12477667>whyHere's your answer
>>12477771saucehttps://shmuplations.com/phantasystarii/
>>12477771>We knew it was shit but we let it in!!I'm not buying it. Sounds like they're trying to deflect the responsability on the "new guy". Spoiler: they were responsbile for the new guy too. You're supposed to tell him how to do things and correct him.
>>12477771I wish they had a guy dedicated to backgrounds.
>>12477763Yeah PS1 is pretty great for an RPG of that era.
>>12477667it was designed to be played with the guide that tells you where to go and shows you the maps.yes, the dungeons are still shit anyway.
>>12477668Like what? Chrono Trigger, maybe Final Fantasy 6? Can't think of anything else I'd call better than Phantasy Star 4 in turn-based RPGs.
Im currently playing PS2, which one should I play after?
>>12477667Just use the hint book bro. You do own a physical copy, right?
>>12477838>I'm not buying it. Sounds like they're trying to deflect the responsability on the "new guy". Spoiler: they were responsbile for the new guy too. You're supposed to tell him how to do things and correct him.Well they're admitting right there that it was their decision to keep it. I agree it's their responsibility.
>>12477841Same, the grid background got old fast. Especially weird considering Phantasy Star 1's graphics were more varied.
>>12477667why did you call the post phantasy star 1 but you are talking about phantasy star II?
>>12478638I think he means a general Phantasy Star series thread.
>>12478619That's the funny part. The dungeons are so convoluted with teleporters and multi-level pitfalls that the maps in this book are literally useless. There are some better ones online, but even then its just crazy.
>>12477771Me>Dezolis is the worse part of the game30 years later I find the devs say>It was the new guys fault, and the experienced people were too meak to confront him...Me>Thanks...
>>12477685Despite the cute sprites and colorful world, 2 is truly the darkest in the series. So clones replacing dead characters really fit the dystopian setting.
>>12477668>>12478172I love a bunch of Snes RPGs, but Phantasy Star 4 is at least as good as the best of them.
>>12477667>TELEPORTER MAZEThose are elevators, anon. Not teleporters. They even have arrows showing if they go up or down a floor.>>12477685 >>12478784>replace them with a clone"Clone" is a bit of a misnomer. It gets lost in translation, but think of it more as regrowing the body and jump-starting the brain. To elaborate, after the boss fight against Neifirst, the Clone Lab Grandma says they can only revive humans, despite it not being a problem before. In the Japanese version, she instead says that the body is so torn up and mangled there isn't enough body mass with human DNA to cultivate a new body. In other words, Neifirst didn't just beat her in a fight, she tore her to fucking shreds
>>12477667they're not teleporters they are ladders
>>12477667They are lifts, not teleporters. No different than stairs. They have arrows to tell you if you are going up or down.
>>12478889>spoilerInterestingly, the PSII Improvement hack was mostly a gameplay hack, but they still went out of their way to tweak this one botched line of translation among a few other minor changes.
>>12478121That wasn't added until it was released outside Japan althoughbeit
>>12478889What if Nei wins?
>>12481418NTA but if I'm not misremembering it's one of those "you lose even if you win" kinds of boss fights.
>>12478889>spoilerMinor thing, but I *think* the issue in the Japanese version is that there isn't enough of her non-human DNA left, which is probably really because she's lifelinked to Neifirst and can't survive without her.
>>12477685>>12478784>>12478889As a kid, I actually reset the game instead of cloning my characters. I didn't want to be playing with clones instead of the real deal. Finding out years later that it wasn't so bad in the original was a relief.
>>12481418Nei's existence is tied to Neifirst, she can win and kill Neifirst but the outcome is the same.
PS2 really does suck ass and was obviously rushed so SEGA could claim they had the first 16-bit RPG. How do you even map dungeons in this game? You can't see ahead and you're walking on tiny grids.
>>12477667I finished Phantasy Star 1 back in 2017 but never got around to PS2. What's the best way to play it and is it even worth it or should I just jump to 4?I know there are two romhacks that add things like faster movement and more money per battles but aren't compatible with each other so just wondering if there's a version that's decided as "the best".
>>12481781I'd say play the original unmodified PSII to your wits' end and once you reach your breaking point jump over to IV to appreciate the QoL and improvements.
>>12481641The game came with a guide. You needed the guide lol.
>>12477668Is great but sadly you would need to mix dragon quest VI, chrono trigger and final fantasy 6 maps to get close to the map of phantasy star IV and that's just in map, story is quite good as well so i don't think is fair to say "wouldn't be in top 20 snes rpg" because is superior.30 hours playing phantasy star IV and i don't think i am near the half, yet funny enough that is more then enough time to finish chrono trigger and star ocean on snes (26 hours both games).
>>12481641As we did in the past making the maps with pen and paper unless you can't write which wouldn't be a surprise.
>>12482531PS4 doesn't have a lot of side content, it's like a 30-40 hour game but it's paced well and doesn't have very many spots where you'd even have to grind. DQ6 is longer but part of that is just class and level grind.
>>12481641>How do you even map dungeons in this game? It's wonky compared to the clean one-step-one-square design of the first game but not unmanageableI made maps in GridCartographer last time I played
>>12481641When I played PS2, for the dungeons I felt like I needed to map Id record all the forks in the path and note the direction I take each time and exhaust all the directions. I employ that strategy in all rpgs that need it and i'll just map wizardry-likes normally. This is an excerpt from my PS2 notes.
>>12479821i refuse to believe they made the dungeons without the intention of selling players a guide at some point. they must've known their dungeons would be a convoluted mess and players would beg for a guide to show them where to go.
>>12482629>i refuse to believehuman beings in the 80s were just built different.
>>12482709a lot of games back then had a guide either come out along side them or at a later date though. i thought the intention was to make games hard to progress without guides so the devs could sell the players guides at some point.or is this completely wrong?
>>12478619I remember when I bought it the guy at the vidya store looked for the hint book for like 20 minutes before giving up and I just bought it without one. I ended up getting stuck in that damn mareura gum island maze for literally 4 hours and couldn't even escapipe to escape and save. I just had to keep playing until I found the exit. Somehow I made it out alive without having to redo it, which over 30 years later I'm still proud of and is why I even remember it at all.
>>12482629IIRC it was part of the fun and added a lot more hours to the game. You felt like an adventurer mapping out the dungeon as you went, adding your own little notes and such to it. The original Phantasy Star didn't come with a guide either. It's archaic design but I can see the point. What I said could just be total bullshit but you do come across the rare post on the internet of people saying "my parent/sibling's map from back when they played X" so it was a common thing to do. I'm sure it also made guides a big selling point too.
Phantasy Star 2 is the best in the series. People complaining about the dungeons are just weaklings. When you beat a PS2 dungeoln, you really feel you've earned it. The aesthetic is fantastic, everything makes sense diegetically (clone labs, data memory, teleporters, etc), the fact you can customise your party membership and have a lot of viable options for equipment makes it more like a WRPG dungeon crawler than the usual on-rails story driven JRPG. Plus, you know, legendary characters, legendary shock value, legendary boss fight at the end, legendary twist.
>>12477667Yeah it's shit. PS1 was so much better
>>12478638Are you retarded? It says "I guess", not I as in a roman numeral 1.
