Long before Tony Hawk, there was...this?
>>12480439it's not actually about skateboarding like the first game, it's more like Double Dragon with skateboards. the programming is also pretty janky.
as far as i can tell EA published and developed this one in-house which is unusual since they were Segaboos who didn't care for Nintendo much
>>12480439fun fact: that's jef whitehead on the cover, a notable black metal musician
>>12480439the halfpipe section is still fun to play. the story mode is a bit of a slog, but i still like taking a swing at it once in a while. might have to cheese through it with savestates some day. i don't think i ever beat whatever comes after the mall. wish some of the modes from the 1st game returned. they could have used the halfpipe for a new version of joust, or had another one of the alleyway levels where you beat the shit out of each other while skating out to the street where the cops are lolgod damn i want to play skate or die now. had it way back in the day, played it a decent amount and wasn't terrible at it
Everyone and their dog had the first SoD game and those cartridges could be found at flea markets in stacks 10 and 20 high, but SoD 2 wasn't that successful.
it's typical of Western NES games ie. indifferent programming and based on dated early 90s pop culture. Japanese games are a lot more timeless.
>>12480482kind of like rad racer 2
>>12480439My wife loved that game, the first one anyways. Any time skate borders come up she does the theme, it rocks.
>>12480453Considering all the experienced 6502 coders the had they could have done better and not had 30 fps framerates.
>>12480489
>>12480482SoD 2 was a 2 megabit game, it was kinda expensive. The first game was UNROM so the carts were cheap to manufacture and they did huge runs of them.
>>12480495The coding experience they had was probably making RPGs and sims for the C64 and that didn't translate into making action titles. Euro devs did understand action stuff better.
>>12480482Yeah you just unlocked a childhood memory of playing it as a kid but I couldn't tell who where or who's cartridge it was
>>12480439>long before thing there was thingwow>>12480451what the hell. don't fucking talk shit about skate or die bitch>>12480503that's a picture of me
>>12480439This box art looks like a dream, why is he dropping sideways straight down several stories in a mall?
>>12480506https://nescartdb.com/profile/view/157/skate-or-diehttps://nescartdb.com/profile/view/254/skate-or-die-2-the-search-for-double-troubleIt shows they did three runs of SoD 2 and six of SoD. I do agree SoD is a very common cartridge you find everywhere.
>>12480489rent free
>>12480521American box art do be like that do.
>>12480521have you never gone extreme or something? get the fuck outside right now and hurl your entire body into a row of mailboxes
>>12480506>SoD 2 was a 2 megabit game, it was kinda expensivethey were ambitious
>>12480489the Famicom library has lots of poorly programmed jank based on Japanese pop culture that's aged as badly
>>12480552Pretty sure they used a 2 megabit PRG mainly to fit the speech samples. Don't think the actual game is that long.
>>12480439the concept and music are cool but the sloppy programming really tries your patience
>>12480659i don't think a menu-oriented, turn based skateboarding game would be very fun, 兄弟
It's like Deadly Towers ie. a huge-ass maze. Four stages each with 64 rooms for 256 total.
>>12480659If this thing had a Konami logo on the box it would be regarded as an instant classic.
>>12480453https://nescartdb.com/search/advanced?developer=Electronic%20Artsthey developed four NES games in house according to this
>>12480439>Western developed NES gamefucking disgusting
>>12480459But that dude's white
>>12480735Filteted
>>12480735Go play Transformers or Garfield if you think all Japanese releases were superior Nipponese steel folded 1000x games and get back to me.
>>12480735tastelet
720 is where it was at.Home versions couldnt come close to its arcade greatness.
>>12480771720 looks amazing for a 1986 game, but for me it's Top Skaterhttps://youtu.be/GVMZNXCJcQU
>>12480750filleted
>>12480789played that a bunch at the arcade, fucking loved that game.
>>12480735Battletoads albeit
>>12480503My nigga Vegetables (zero eaten)
>>12480439>>12480451Both of the games are amazing. I kept coming back to both.
>>12480439I wouldn't swear Bart vs The Space Mutants wasn't inspired by this game.
>>12480439I remember renting this from the grocery store. I don't even know why but I really liked the adventure mode and got pretty good at it.
>>12480907Because it's pretty good. There's a lot of game to the game, you know?
>>12480729All of the games EA 'developed', save one, were ports of Commodore 64 titles. EA farmed out the ports. Mostly they were ported by Konami but Rare handled Jorden Vs. Bird. The only game they developed on the platform themselves was Skate or Die 2. It was also never ported to any other systems. Not surprising, as most other 6502 based systems were pretty much done by 1990 and the two year 'no ports to other systems' requirement Nintendo forced on developers basically guaranteed it would be an exclusive.>>124805063 megabit actually. The thing that surprised me is how rare skateboarding games were in the 80s and early 90s. It was huge where I lived. Every kid I knew owned a skateboard and knew how to ride. There was a drought in California back in the day and kids would sneak into peoples back yards and skate in their empty pools while they were at work. Yet there were only a handful of games released that featured it. And lets be frank, most of them sucked. As best I could find, 12 games were released between 86 and 94 and 4 of them were in the Skate or Die series, 4 were compilation games which mostly featured other sports, and 2 were dogshit Atari console exclusives from Absolute Entertainment. That opening for the C64 version of Skate or Die is solid though.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqRXxPl6bXA
>>12481436>3 megabit actuallyit's 2 megabit PRG and 1 megabit CHR. that setup was pretty common with MMC3 but with MMC1 like this game uses was rare.
>>12480521The title isn't a metaphor.
>>12480735>https://nescartdb.com/profile/view/157/skate-or-dieThere was a time when the west was making games for gaming and not some DEI initiative. And they were really good at it.
>>12480439It's shit, the first one is much better, but only on the C64. Ski or die on the NES is alright.
>>12480735I wonder if some Japanese players feel the opposite way considering the only western games released on Famicom were the good ones and they could put that in perspective with the plethora of kuso they gotIn other words, you're retarded.
>>12480673It's not nearly as rough as Deadly Towers. This game is quite playable (if you're patient and a bit generous) until the final stage, which is indeed a large, punishing, tedious maze. It's an okay game, mostly. The soundtrack and intro cutscene try very hard to carry it, and they fail, but not too badly.
>>12480439Surprised they never tried to bring this back when Tony Hawk game was popular
>>12480439There was also a weird Game Boy spinoff that was even further derived from the original Skate or Die.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bmX41z5yc8
>>12483003I grabbed as many gb games as i could from myrient a couple days ago, gonna play this tonight
>>12482995Tony Hawk loved Skate or Die, he's mentioned it
