I'll just leave this here...
>>12481156didn't they never release this in Japan because they were too afraid of it?
>>12481156Don't leave it here Anon, take it home and play it, it's great
Did anyone genuinely beat this game without a guide?
>>12481171Yes. The secret is to lie about beating it without a guide online.
too bad it didn't get C64 port like the other Wizardrys
>>12481168It got several Japan-exclusive console releases, you retard. Japan loves the game more than anyone.
>>12481171Aside from the secret true ending and the answer to that one puzzle everyone knows the answer to via osmosis now anyway, the game is mostly difficult because of the floor layouts, not the puzzles. It can always be trucked through.
>>12481168This game got a JP-exclusive remake for the PC-Engine. This game also got a JP-exclusive remake of the game on PS1 that also had an exclusive arranged mode of the game that overhauls things so you can summon different monsters and equip them with gear, but only 1 of each. I've played around with it, and using some cheats I researched you can force the arranged mode units to be used in the original mode. One day I'll sit down and use AI to create a translation of the arranged mode so I can find out what additional plot bits were added in, but I have yet to do more than go through the Original mode campaign with cheats.
this game is just a pile of random jokes designed to fuck with the player's head. if you can even get out of the first room you're doing great.
>>12481183Outside of the RNG, the puzzles are kinda fucked up. But then again I think the game expected you to pay that traveling hint guy every time you saw him on multiple playthroughs to get all of his hints. The floors aren't that bad, up until you reach the floor before the Cosmic Cube, and the Cosmic Cube itself. I still have zero idea how the fuck you are supposed to navigate the floor prior to the Cosmic Cube. Then there's that infamous spinner room in the Cosmic Cube where reaching the exit is almost pure RNG.Seriously, look at this shit. I will never reach the Cosmic Cube without cheats, and I don't care.
Wizardry? more like Faggotry
>>12481227Do those arrows represent one way walls? What are the magic circles? Like how am I supposed to read this? Either way, yeah it looks confusing.
>>12481247The arrows represent 1-way walls, and the map loops around in all four directions, so you can go north of 18,0 and end up at 0,0. Or go east at 17,19 and end up at 17,0. The question marks are actually spinner tiles, that spin you a random direction, and also spin you every time you open the menu or cast the mapping spell that tells you what direction you face, so the info you get will be bad by the time you get it. You might notice some of those spinners are in rooms where you won't be able to tell what direction you face and you can take the wrong direction without knowing, on a one-way path. And that once you are in a certain part of this map, there is no escape. Not even counting the rooms where you can get trapped if you accidentally enter. Oh, and you don't have the item you need to make Trebor fuck off yet.Welcome to die.
>>12481156Im gonna play the ps2 one soon. Looks cool. Never played these games before
>>12481227>But then again I think the game expected you to pay that traveling hint guy every time you saw himYes>on multiple playthroughs to get all of his hints. No, you get all the hints on one playthrough, that's how he works.>I still have zero idea how the fuck you are supposed to navigate the floorYou map it.If you haven't played the game properly, don't say retarded shit like this.>Either way, yeah it looks confusing. It's supposed to be. It's an exercise in mapping. The game is hard and it makes no pretenses that it isn't.
>>12481263>Im gonna play the ps2 one soon. Looks cool.fr fr
>>12481246You know all about it don't you?
>>12481270>one line responses, has a line break between sentences because mobile posterLARPer-kun, you need a new act. You're too predictable and easy to recognize.
>>12481171Wizardry is beatable with enough time and patience. Ball breaking, but still doable. I refuse to believe anyone beat IV on their own back in the day.
>>12481298The NES ports are also easier than the computer ones.
>>12481359Of course I'm talking about the PC ones. I don't think wiz IV ever got an NES port, but it did get put on the ps1 and that allowed you to control your own monsters other than them doing whatever the fuck they wanted and you hoping it doesn't fuck you over. I think it was the first time Japan got IV too, they mainly stick to the first three even though I still think IV has a lasting influence there
>>12481276I have no idea what the hell you're babbling about.>>12481392It got a PC Engine port long before the PSX one.
>>12481247The magic circles are pentagrams, your main method of progress. You are a frail wizard/mage/magic man, you cannot fight do-gooders on your own, you nedd monsters. Pentagrams are where you can summon them. They also level you up once per level, allowing you to cast more and better spells.
>>12481425you get a limited number of uses per spell and must use them very very carefully as you cannot recharge unless you make your way back to a pentagram. the monsters also perform RNG actions and you can't directly control what they do.
>>12481168The Japanese love the Wizardry games more than North America and Europe combined, it was a big hit there and influenced a lot of big Japanese games.>>12481171Yes, but Wizardry 4 is a mean game which doesn't particularly respect your time, it demands that you fucking commit and perform. You may cry a couple of angry tears in frustration. This has its place in the gaming world, though I can see why it's not as widely popular as other retro games, so it can be a hard sell.>>12481246Faggotry 4 could be a funny shitpost hack.
>>12481260That's fucking amazing, the devs truly went "Go fuck yourself, and actually, go fuck yourself some more!"
>>12481393>It got a PC Engine port long before the PSX one.Did the PC Engine let you control your monsters or were they just like in the original?
>>12481272Bussin makes me feel good.
how do i get into wizardry? do i play the originals or the console remakes?
>>12481156i rather play pokemon or digimon.
>>12481701the Apple II versions were the originals but the later ports were a bit easier to use because they had menu select for spells instead of typing the names out in full.
>>12481272This game is busin fr fr lmao, too bad the sequel (prequel, Busin 0) was never translated
>>12481979The C64 ports I think were based on the JPC ones so they have an easier interface. The NES ones as you probably know were dumbed down to be more kid-friendly, the game autosaves after each successful battle and you can't die of old age if you take too long to finish.
>>12481592The funny part is the difficulty was supposed to be hard, but not as hard as it ended up being. That's a direct result of their play-tester being Scorpia of CGW, and every time she got stuck she would just walk over and ask the programmers, who were eager to fawn over her and gave her the solution. Then when she finished the game, she told the project lead "Yeah, this game is totally challenging but fair, I beat it no problems." They thought Wizardry 4 would be a smash hit that would sell to all the Wizardry fans who had been begging for a challenge. Instead word quickly spread of how fucked up it was and they went right back to standard Wizardry for the 5th game, not even risking trying a new engine.Having to know you need a light spell to leave the first room? That was intentional. It was designed to be a game for all the Wizardry pros who had beaten the games with every possible party and wanted a challenge, they would know game mechanics like that. Needing to understand Kabbalahism with no hints? That's Scorpia's fault. As for that floor and the Cosmic Cube, it's a coin toss as to what parts are intentional and which are a result of Scorpia having all the answers provided to her.
>>12482335I respect the fuck out of making a game for the hardcore fans to challenge them, but that sounds so unprofessional.Did the console ports smooth any of this over?
>>12482348Well, it was an issue of "We need a super-hardcore Wizardry player to make sure this game is the right level of challenge" and "who the hell do we know who's supposedly a super-hardcore Wizardry player?" And Scorpia was the RPG and adventure game 'pro' for CGW, so they asked and she said yes. And they believed she knew what she was doing, because they weren't sitting there babysitting her to make sure she didn't walk over to the programmers and ask for help.I can't speak for the PCE port, but the PS1 Original mode does make it somewhat easier by giving you an auto-map you can access from the menu, as well as providing graphics for the walls and floors, so you can actually SEE yourself spin on the spinner tiles instead of just appearing in the new direction. This is very big when you get to the spinner room in the Cosmic Cube, because now you can actually see what direction you need to go, and what direction you are facing as long as you don't lose track during a spin.I only played the Arranged mode long enough to locate the summon monster data, I don't know if they tuned the enemy hero groups to reflect the fact you can only summon 1 of each monster now.
>>12482335>Needing to understand Kabbalahism with no hints? That's Scorpia's faultSo Scorpia was one of them? Man, they truly ruin everything.
>>12481156Wizardry 4 fucking sucks. Imagine the disappointment of the people in 1987 who paid for this trash instead of Ultima 4 or The Bard's Tale.
>>12481701>>12481979The original Apple II versions were kinda shitty, the later computer versions starting with the JPC ones are the ones the creators treat as the "new standard version" and all later releases ultimately used as their base. The console versions aren't great, like most computer RPGs at the time they were designed with a full keyboard in mind and don't translate well to gamepads.
>>12482335>and every time she got stuck she would just walk over and ask the programmers, who were eager to fawn over her and gave her the solutionNo, she's said than even though she tried to ask for help, they refused to give her any. She did beat the game 100% legit.
>>12481701Console ports are the best. The pinned comment here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=is1hAqNRwR8is from one of the creators basically endorsing the later ports over the original, and the video itself is a good overview of the differences.
>>12482348I wish this kind of thing still existed, like SMB2 JP, AKA the lost levels. The last time I remember someone making a sequel explicitly to satisfy fans who though the original was too easy was New Super Luigi U but even then it's not hard to that extent.
>>12481616Monsters can be controlled.
>>12482459>paid for PC gamesha ha no, zoomer -kun. you instead made a trip to the friendly neighborhood warez BBS and got W4 for free.
>>12482515Only eurotrash pirated games. Us Americans with jobs were better than that.
