How depressing would it have been to go to EB Games/Toys R' Us in 1998 because you wanted to check out the latest SNES releases (for some reason) and this is the game you walked out with?
you're really gonna diss my boi Frogger like that
>>12481284It's a decent port of frogger so I wouldn't be too upset.
Finally... Nintendo brings the arcade home...
dumb frogposter
>>12481284I never got any of them back in the day, but I have to imagine that these postmortem SNES ports of old arcade games were sold at a heavy discount, even when they were new releases.
it would have been more appropriate to port on the NES but it sadly never got the game
The Frogger arcade game had a strange history because Sega USA owned the US distribution rights and it wasn't until years later that Konami bought it back from them. Yet there were never any home system ports in Japan, all of them are Western-developed including the OP one. Apparently that was because the arcade game was never very popular in Japan compared to here so Konami didn't bother porting it to anything.
>>12481351instead i guess Konami thought Road Fighter was a better and more worthwhile game to port
>>12481362It's a very American-coded game to be honest. It seems like something Atari would have developed
>>12481379https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q5-QNfmsbQthis looks like a student programming project
>>12481351There is a plug n play version of the gba Konami Arcade Collection, which has the nes versions of Yi Ar Kung Fu, Rush n Attack and Gyruss. Oddly enough though, it has what appears to be brand new nes versions of Time Pilot and Frogger. So if you want to see what a early Famicom port would have been like, check it out. It even got its own standalone release with none of the other games.
>>12481385someone did a homebrew port of Road Fighter to the Master System. why? i don't know but they did.
>>12481385It's probably their worst Famicom release next to Exciting Baseball.
>>12481284I was floored to find that the Mega Drive Frogger used a 4 megabit ROM but the actual game is only like 35k so the ROM is 90% empty (the SNES version is 2 megabits)
>>12481284I've been playing this recently. There isn't any music, which I really hate.
>>12481284I got this game along with Mario RPG so I wasn't depressed at all
>>12481284Majesco was pretty much a con-job.
>>12481491To say it feels like a Newgrounds flash game is almost too kind. This is peak shovelware.Honestly I recommend people just pick up the PS1 version (with the same cover), it's a fun remake
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v06erxZO31QThis is lame.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdpmmZLbCrgThe Mega Drive one is way better.
>>12482134Oh wow SNES owners really did get the shittiest version
>>12481951They did release the Core system game gear which had better parts than Sega's original. Mine is still working fine with no needed repairs.
>>12482134it was funny because the programmer said he had to play a Frogger cab and memorize the game because he didn't have any source listings. would you believe it? 1998 and they were still having to do this like it was 1983.
>>12481351I think Frogger might have been hard to do on the system, at least in the early days because you don't have rewritable graphics RAM so how do you animate the moving logs?
>>12482134just so we don't forget. the MD was intended to be an arcade ports machine. the SNES was intended as an RPG box.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9h8DYjO8KEMr. Do! on the SNES. It's...okay.
>>12481357OIY
wtf i haet es-nes now
>>12481284 Frogger was the last domestically released SNES game and was a port of the PS1 smash hit
>>12482181I think the Mega Drive Frogger programmer said the arcade game used a bitmap screen that didn't really translate to the console's tile graphics.
>>12481284>Saw the ads on tv>Read the reviews in the gaming rags>Always passed it up at the videogame rental spotsThe game was a remake of a dinosaur when it came out. Wouldn't be me senpai. I remember they tried to jazz it up and market it to kids for a bit instead of its actual audience: the Gem Xers who bought the Williams and Namco arcade collections released around that time. Not sure if I ever played SNES frogger to this day.
>>12482806>Gem Xers
>>12481284I never played the SNES version of this, but the PS1 port is a ton of fun, very challenging expansion of the arcade game, but with way more levels and enemies/hazards
>>12482849if Frogger had been a prime era SNES game released in 1993 they probably would have done all that with it, but nobody was going to spend more than about $100 on a new SNES release in '98.
>>12482849Yeah. The PSX version was incredibly fun.
>>12482875it's quite peculiar because the NES was still getting real games to the end, even late Atari 2600 releases were pushing the envelope with 16k and even 32k carts compared to the 4k and 8k ones of the console's heyday.
>>12482887The event of 3D and CD based games was a far bigger transformation that made everything that came before obsolete. The NES had the same CPU as the 2600, it was not nearly so big of a jump compared with the PS1.
>>12482707>portLol have you played the PS1 version? No, Majesco just used the PS1 cover art because that one sold well. The SNES version itself feels like a flash game made in the early Newgrounds days
