What are some examples of retro games that can’t be emulated properly without the physical copy? I only know of a few handheld games like pic related and “WarioWare Twisted” that had physical hardware gimmicks that you can’t experience otherwise. Or games like the GBC pod racing game that had a battery powered rumble pack.
>>12481708All of the Boktai games have solar sensor meter hacks available that let you use button combinations to adjust the sunlight level so you can play through them just fine.
>>12481708I play Twisted and other gyro games on my phone, and it works pretty well.
>>12481817In other words, you can't get the proper experience where the game changes due to the environment around you. You just set it manually which is the opposite of the point.
>>12481708Virtual Boy games require the original hardware to be experienced properly due to how the visuals work and the fact that other controllers can't properly copy the layout
>>12481904You had to artificially place yourself with a real cart anyway to get proper sunlight and it didn't work well with the SP given where the cartridge slot was placed.
>>12465931Un-emulateable speech synthesis chip.
>>12481961It wasn't designed for the SP. You don't artificially position yourself because the game adapts to your current environment, retard.
>>12481904just manually set it to match your environment
>>12481984On that note, it was recently discovered that the special chips in SNES games aren't emulated correctly. This applies to the FX PAK Pro and MiSTer FPGA core also. So if you care about any SNES games that use special chips than you're going to want the real cartridge for those. And if you care about audio, you should only play Sega Genesis games and Commodore 64 games on original hardware because neither of those systems have their audio chip emulated correctly even in the year of our Plumber 2000+26.
>>12482059>just take the fun out of it
>>12482064Nigga have you EVER looked at a GBA screen?Have you EVER looked at a GBA screen in DIRECT SUNLIGHT?
>>12481947This. VB needs to be experienced on real hardware or atleast with a VR headset. Vectrex as well. Likewise while you can emulate the game, you need the controller to experience Steel Battalion.
i only remember that real SID sounds more resonant than emulator does
only kojimbo could come up with a gimmick so stupid let alone actually go through with it
>>12482234I don't think he actually had much to do with these games
>>12481904>>12482029I loved the Boktai games but I agree with him, using a solar meter hack is just fine. You're grasping at straws saying it's not. It's certainly not a reason to avoid playing them if you don't have a cart. That said, I played both on an SP and the light meter worked well enough. It's not impossible to make your own or buy one, but the Tempest spinner control fits the bill as well as anything in my opinion. The game is playable on controllers, but feels so different with the original set up.
>>12482104The point of the game is to get a different experience in different amounts of light (ambient), you're not supposed to play the game at high fucking noon when there isn't a cloud in the sky you retard.
>>12482234>>12482318He came up with the idea because they had a bunch of solar sensors lying around from a toy that didn't sell very well so he came up with the concept as something they could use those sensors for.
>>12482379Yeah, so you tell the game it's cloudy when it's cloudy, sunny when it's sunny and dark when it's night time. You're not playing on an original GBA at night without either a desk lamp or wormlight anyways.
>>12481708You can emulate it properly on any modern phone from the last 10 years, you set up the front camera/light sensor as the solar panel
>>12481708I was able to get warioware twisted working with modern gyro implementations but I could never get the yoshi tipping game to work.
>>12481708its mind boggling how good the first game is when you consider that the franchise had its last breath with lunar knightsthat one was such a let down. all the stealth mechanics and puzzles were removed in favor of being combat-only. i feel like this franchise is the best example of one that got progressively worse with each release
>>12482029T. Never played it. Kek
>>12481708There are flashcarts such as picrel which have a solar sensor in them, the new GBA Everdrive that just came out has pretty much every sensor/special chip that commercial GBA games had with the exception of rumble.
>>12481947There are several ways to get the 3D effect other than using a real Virtual Boy, easiest way would be to just use a hacked 3DS.>>12482061>On that note, it was recently discovered that the special chips in SNES games aren't emulated correctly. This applies to the FX PAK Pro and MiSTer FPGA core also. So if you care about any SNES games that use special chips than you're going to want the real cartridge for those.Which ones? If you are talking about the SA-1 chip, that was corrected on the MiSTer core.>>12482381>He came up with the idea because they had a bunch of solar sensors lying around from a toy that didn't sell very well so he came up with the concept as something they could use those sensors for."Hey, we have these surplus solar sensors that cost us a few cents each, go spend thousands developing a GBA game and the custom PCB/cart casing to put them in so the pocket change we spent on these sensors doesn't go to waste."I find that hard to believe
>all these people who cheated at boktailmao
Still beat it. Still had fun :)
>phones just mimic all the old hardware gimmicks >they even have flash carts with light sensors + gyro So are there *any* notable games that can’t be fully emulated in 2026?
>>12484173For GBA? None off the top of my head. Though IMO emulating on a phone is a shitty experience.
>>12484173I don't think you can emulate this one.https://www.gamesradar.com/maybe-the-most-obscure-gba-game-ever-made-has-been-preserved-an-australia-only-blood-sugar-tester/
>>12484316I just knew someone was going to bring up the Glucoboy, that's specifically why I said "commercial GBA games". Notice the person you replied to also said "notable" games. I don't think anyone cares about an outdated glucose meter for diabetic kids disguised as a GBA game.
>>12484316>they didn't put wilford brimley in the game
>>12482407ExactlyWhat is the problem?
>>12482482/thread
>>12484772There is no problem. Anyone who wants to feel the original experience can.
>>124817082nd gen games that used dial controls
Boktai never worked properly even with the original cart and OG horizontal GBA. I remember having to basically sit directly in the sun to get any meter all.
>>12484825Your cart must have been fucked up, it worked great for me.
