Were there any large faction of people in gaming who did not like the transition into 64 bit 3D games in the mid 90s, or was that considered mental illness? >imagining all this 3D slop coming out and ruining the entire mediumIt's somewhat plausible.
Large faction no but i have seen people not liking the 3d stuff back then (probably couldn't get into them), it has grown more these years and even saying the whole era could be skipped since 6th gen refined it or it should have stayed with sprite based games.
>>12482559Same ones seething about ray tracing and ai enhancements these days: poorfags
>>12482559Personally I thought it happened too soon for consoles. I was into both console and computer gaming back then and the Saturn, PS1 and N64 3D games all looked very disappointing by comparison. It's actually the main reason why even though I loved the Nes and Snes and have owned most of Nintendo's later consoles, I never had any interest in the N64. I thought the games looked terrible then with all the fog and low res textures. Which isn't to say I thought PS1 or Saturn games looked any better, but they had a larger selection of 2D games.
>>12482559It's the golden age of video game why would you be disappointed ?
>>12482559>was that considered mental illness? No, we hadn't devolved to the point where believing everyone who has a different opinion is schizo, autistic, retarded or just being paid to pretend to be one of those 3 things to shill a different opinion
>>12482580This. Wish we got a true 32bit gen where 3D was starting, but not standard.
>The 16 bits generation happened too soon just look at final fight on SNES extremely disappointing, wish we had a true 16 bits generation with arcade accurate game and no games with awfull slow down !!Thanks god Nintendo sega and Sony didn't listen to backward people like you
my mom, born in 1960, had save files of games all 100%ed when I was growing up but she didn’t play any games anymorefound out later it’s because 3D games made her motion sick so she just stopped
>>12482559People bitched all the time about early 3d games. Usually bad camera control was the main culprit but they didnt blame "3D technology" directly. Just the poor implementation of it.
Another thing is that journalists were often cheerleaders to games that pushed 3D tech, especially the late 1990s when 3D cards took off and half the mahazine was ads for 3D hardware. God knows how many reviews in PC gamer and CGW had the phrase "if your hardware can handle it, it is amazing". It was never phrased as "the game runs poorly on 99% of comouters and 3D was a mistake". They had to make the advertisers happy.
>>12482597Our society has been completely skullfucked by social media to the point that it can't even handle cognitive dissonance caused by simple disagreements. Its weird to think that console fanboys of the 90's were somehow more reasonable than modern discourse around games. This timeline fucking sucks.>>12482592Eh, there were massive growing pains in multiple genres and series. Some made the transition to 3d a lot more gracefully than others, and people still complain about plenty of aspects of those golden years. IT was a mostly positive time but a very mixed one as well.
>>12482897>>12482597Its not actually that bad outside you're just describing 4chan
>>12482897>there were massive growing pains in multiple genres and seriesWell that's the case for all generations some series decline in quality with the generation transition, many such cases in the 6th gen with stuff like tomb raider final fantasy wave race Mario megaman or crash being a clear step down from their 5th gen counter part
>>12482580I think the graphics by themselves were passable enough, especially when devs had decent art teams who gave a shit about texturing. it's the low fidelity combined with crushing performance drops and limited fov that leaves a bad taste. the biggest leap of the 6th gen was stability and performance as much as fidelity. large 3d environments just worked.
>>12482559>Were there any large faction of people in gaming who did not like the transition into 64 bit 3D games in the mid 90s,In the 2000s there was a vocal minority of gamers who demanded new 2d games.
>>12482937You used to actually be able to talk about politics and religion without becoming unpersoned. Yes this place has devolved to shit but even just working retail or food service will show you its far beyond a just here problem. People have been very conditioned to see everything as either validation or opposition with no room in between in record time.>>12482940Guess my point was that there was plenty to dislike during the "golden age." Specifically not that I think it was a bad time or anything, but more that it took a lot longer for some to get their stride than others during that time. It was simultaneously a step up and down until everyone understood what did and didn't work with the transition to 3D.
>>124825593D games and an inherent slowness and clunkiness 2D did not. I noticed this as a child, but apparently autistic people did not.
>>12482897>simple disagreementsLast weekend I was talking to my zoomer cousin while he was playing fallout 76. He asked me if I liked the game, I told him no, he told me I just didn't know how to play it(wtf?), I told him I didn't like fallout 4 and I generally dislike mmos because they're usually grind heavy, repetitive and I feel like I'm generally wasting my time. He got up and walked away mid game. He went and told his mom, my aunt, that I was bullying him and told her to make me leave the room his xbox is in. And she fucking did. She came in the room and actually told me that if I'm going to disrespect her son in her house that I didn't need to he there. So I left, that was our big family easter dinner. He's 23.
>>12484179Should've slapped that bitch then spanked that faggot in front of her, then proceeded to shove that Xbox up his ass until he begs for you to stop and promises to respect you from now on, while also admitting that Fallout 1 is the best of course.
>>12482580I also hated the n64. I didn't want to be Nintendo's Guinea pig to test proto 3d tech that wasn't ready and wasn't fun at the expense of the SNES games I loved. And they forced that choice because the 64 hardware was mutually exclusive to SNES 2d. Instead of another 5 years of peak 2d Nintendo shoved shitty 3d games (at higher prices) and actually got ne to switch to psx. At least they still did some 2d like Sotn.
>>12484179I am around his age and this just sounds like a highly autistic individual tbqh
>>12484179Before I finished reading your post I was going to ask if they were Christians and then you confirmed it. That flavour of douchery is sadly all too familiar.
>>12482559My older siblings grew up with an NES and genesis and stopped playing videogames long before we had any 3D consoles at home.Later I've heard them talk about 3D games like "They're too confusing. You can go anywhere and I don't know what to do."
I think enthusiasts all too often project such quandries onto others. People by and large just accept what's available without a second thought about how shit compares to the past, other media, different regions, etc. 3D was a spectacle to the average consumer, and helped differentiate it from the previous generation. Development moved to new platforms. Unless you had parents who made you sell off your current console to fund a new one (as some I knew did), it's not as if you suddenly lost access to those games. You had too many new games coming out to lament about the past, and consider what may have been lost in the transition. There's a parallel to this in the console war debate. There would be arguments about what console was better and some tribal pride, but for the most part, you just wanted to play everything. You'd play fighters with whoever had a PSX, splitscreen FPS with N64 owners. Someyimes we'd even coordinate what games we got to make sure we had a wider variety to choose from. A lot of the discourse I see on /vr/ was never relevant then or even now.
>>12482559i dont really remember anyone saying they disliked 3D when it was new. it was such a big leap that everyone seemed pretty excited for it.
>>12482559Not exactly but I went from 8 bit to pc so played early 3D games like Doom and simply polygon and early textured games and then later discovered 16 bit games after I had an N64 so I didn't have the impression that some other people had that 16 bit games were outdated and primitive. I liked 3D games but I would also be really excited if I saw one of the few 2D games for the ps1. When I saw Doom on snes in a rental place I just assumed that technically Doom was on the level of 16 bit games. When I saw Yoshi Story on N64 the graphics absolutely blew me away and this was after playing the early N64 3D games. And back then before I knew anything I considered Wolfenstein 3D to have graphics equivalent to an Nes or Master System game. One moment was playing DK64 and thinking how much worse the graphics were.>>12482580I used to be disgusted with an non textured 3D from before 1994 or so if I happened to find a demo on pc. At the time I believed that the typical 16 bit game was so much more advanced.
