2 (HD remake only), 8 and 11 are the only Dragon Quests that give you satisfying character development, instead of delegating their personalities to party chat single dialogues.If you value that, and I know I do, then it's one of those.
At least back when I got into DQ back in the early 00s, the one most of the fans agrees to be the holy masterpiece of the series was III.Nowadays it seems that while still respected I see more people praising V, which is also a masterpiece on its own.
