Manabe is one of the pioneers of the modern "JRPG beastman catgirl" where the males are full furry and the females are sexy "ears and tails only" types. That all traces back to this one man. Rumiko Takahashi had done some of the earliest catgirl pinup illustrations and popularized the earliest "ears and tail" animal eared girls, but she never drew anything explicit. Manabe was doing catgirl porn books in the 80s and also putting catgirls in his fantasy and sci-fi settings. This was long before villgust and other JRPGs started including animal eared girls as a core fantasy race (human/elf/dwarf/beastman). He also had the first "dragon newt" type cute dragon girl with wings and tail.
