It might be divisive... but "bad" is just ridiculous, it's still a classic.

I liked it. I find that most of those who dislike Sonic CD dislike it because it's not as straightforward as Sonic 2

I was a Sega kid who was always told that Sonic CD was like the most amazing iteration of the series by game mags and forums alike. Never got to actually play it until Sonic Gems was released. I was a bit underwhelmed after wanting to play it for the better part of a decade. The stages have a more chaotic and geometric style I don't really like. The time travel mechanic feels like a gimmick that wasn't very well thought out. It just felt more like a weird fork in the timeline, like a Sonic 1.5 made on better hardware. It's a curiosity like Chaotix is.
>>
The real reason people don't like Sonic CD in this post-2012 timeline is because of FOMO, they didn't get to joyfully experience it back when it was new on a SEGA CD, they didn't organically play the game experimenting with the time travel mechanic and the exploration on their own, and they played butchered ports that didn't even let them do that, since for example the Taxman port removed the timer reset mechanic, completely removing a core mechanic from the time travel and punishing players for wanting to play the game the way Oshima and co. designed it.
It's all really sad because CD is a great entry, maybe not better than 1 and 2 but fights for a 3rd place with S&K

Please explain
>>
>>12485163
So you admit that you disliked it because it wasn't like Sonic 2?
>>
>>12485169
It wasn't exclusive to the Sega CD for very long.

Looking for projectors isn't fun. Seeing the good and bad versions of the future is largely pointless. They just didn't do enough with the concept. It would have been interesting if perhaps you had to go into the past to change something in the present, or have different bosses for each. Some reason to want to activately time travel beyond breaking animal abuse holograms and seeing a future variant with different tiles.
>>
>>12485180
The fun for this was proven.
>>
>>12485187
>Looking for projectors isn't fun
Then don't do it
>Seeing the good and bad versions of the future is largely pointless.
They're entire extra levels with altered layouts, unique aesthetics, unique music. I don't understand how having quadruple the playable levels isn't a huge boon in itself.
>>
>>12485180
>>12485195
thank god they proved this was fun
>>
>>12485176
Didn't say I didn't like it, it just wasn't what I expected. With everything I had read and the screenshots I had seen over the years, I thought it was some amazing holy grail Sonic game I would never get to play. This was a pre-YouTube time, I had no idea what the game was actually like. I probably would have found it more impressive if I had played it at the time. As it stands now, I still play all the classic 2D MD/32X games, but Sonic CD, not so much. Once every few years.
>>
>>12485187
Looking for the projectors is entirely optional. You can get good futures by completing special stages, also optional.

My parents have been happily married for 45 years and they got me a Genesis and a Sega CD when I was a kid. The divorced dad nintoddler meme doesn't really carry a lot of weight
>>

The first Sonic CD port was already butchered on windows with extra loading screns in between time travel, ruining the experience.
Only the 1993 original remains pure to Oshima's intention

Only people who played with the USA OST say this.

It’s not bad, but terribly flawed. Why is there no mod that fixes it? Sonic fans are the ultimate modders

Americans and Sonic 2 are the cancer that made proper discussion on this game impossible, it's the best 2D sonic game ever made.
>>
>>12485916
>MURR LEVEL DESIGN!!
nigger you like all retards criticising this game don't even know what good level design is, this game offers the best level design in the entire 2D saga of sonic games but knowing you brainrotted millenials require a cutscene every 5 seconds to keep you from knowing where to go and what to do, CD having no forced cutscenes and scripted sequences makes you seethe and THAT'S why you think the game has bad level design.
>>
>>12485472
>The heckin' mods!
It doesn't need fixing because it's flawless, your "flaws" with the game are down to you being so dopamine addicted to sonic 2's "hold right to win / get free speed" formula that level design requiring you to use physics and momentum are alien and scary to you.
>>
>>12485176
>didn't like it because it wasn't sonic 2
that's literally the only reason CD is so hated, people like cybershell who are the faces of sonic game discourse even admit it, they're to scared to play a game where sonic's moveset and physics potential is truly pushed to its limit and prefer the much safer and familiar sonic 2, which is why the faggots insulting this game are utterly worthless and don't matter.

I think you nailed it friend. It is hard to go back to the Mega CD if you did not experience it at the time. It was the only affordable way to experience the Multimedia CD-ROM experience that was a big deal at the time. Despite mostly being FMV games and a view decent PC ports, It was a brief flash of awesomeness that I am glad was there for. In just a few more years the PlayStation would hit the scene and also the explosive growth of the internet made the unique experience of Mega CD outdated very quickly. But for the 3+ years it had, it was a special and unique experience if you had one, or had a friend with one.

Unique Mega CD memories:

>>
>>12485472
Because the 'flaws' don't exist. There's nothing to fix.
>>

Sonic CD is a game that revolves around a time travel gimmick which has you create a good future in every level to get the true ending, but you can just get the good ending by doing all the special stages which are pathetically easy and don’t require searching through the levels in the past. The main gimmick of the game is automatically rendered obsolete. There’s no incentive to actually explore, and if you just hold right and go to the end of each level the game is in fact easier and shorter than any other Sonic game. That’s a pretty fucking obvious glaring flaw. The time machines you destroy in the past shouldn’t have been in the game. Instead you should have searched for the special stage entrances in each level, and destroying the capsules in those is what creates a good future.
>>
>>12485941
>over 60 levels
My ass
>>
>>12487787
>7 levels, 3 acts each with 4 different time periods
>7 special stages
By my math, that makes for 91 unique levels
>>
>>12485169
Tbh this is probably why I couldn't get into it. I think if I bought it in 1993 I would have played the hell out of it to see all variations of the levels with the time travel gimmick, but now that would just feel like a chore to me. But I can see that the game is probably better than it feels to me.
>>
Good future stages are locked behind boring find-em-ups and frustrating looking for a spot where Sonic can get up to 88 mph to activate the time warp.
>>
>>12487780
>There’s no incentive to actually explore
No extrinsic incentive. I think there's intrinsic value in checking out the levels in each time period.
>if you just hold right and go to the end of each level the game is in fact easier and shorter than any other Sonic game
No doubt it's easier, but that doesn't make it any less well-crafted.

Sonic 2, the Game Gear port of the Master System game, is the first BAD Sonic game.
>not GG Sonic 1?
Not really, they made tons of changes from MS to mostly account for the screensize change, meabwhile Sonic 2 GG is painful since they rushed it out to release by the Genesis game.

At what age did you grow up out of making bait threads, anons?

It's clearly an owl mask, maybe modeled after the owl-like iconography on the islands but prolly a coincidence.
This guy who showed up at the end of the season 2 finale was penciled in as Knuckles pulling his Sonic 3 boxart impression, but the writer wanted to retcon it with some stupid wizard character who looks nothing like that, so I'm sure the next season would've been terrible.

I feel like those games you always wanted to play but never got a chance to get built up in your mind so much it's almost inevitable to get disappointed when you actually get to play them

I never got to play Chrono trigger in the 90's because i just never even saw the cart at stores and after release it just got more and more expensive. And the whole time i kept hearing how it was the best squaresoft game of that era and I was so bummed i never got to play it and then i finally did and it was...okay? Like, totally fine but not remotely as mindblowing as I'd expected. Nothing can compete with imagination

I like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 better than the Genesis games.
