>the level select is 1 big mapI will now play your game
>>12487883Even though the warp room thing is what I think of first with Crash, I was really disappointed when I beat 1 and then started 2 and I wasn't going on a big adventure and just teleporting around to random places. The big map is so neat.
This is a form of soul that was lost to time
>>12487893It's fairly common in JRPGs, Romancing SaGa invented it and other RPGs caught on ten years later (as usual).
>>12487883This is why SMB Deluxe will always be the definitive version of the game.
Yoshi's Island has that world map island that reflects the level progression, and the string of levels per world accurately convey an adventure through a varied world.
>>12487883>When the map changes as you unlock stages/routes.>When the map has stages not marked by nodes but you can hover your character over them, making you comb every suspicious corner in it.>When you can walk all over the world map instead of following paths and nodes.>When the world map is a shameless engine flex (think: SNES games using Mode7)>When the world map section has your character freely flying around (Demon's Crest, Valkyrie Profile)We didn't know how good we had it back then.
>>12487883Yes.
>>12487893yes i would definitely consider it soul. its amazing how much it can add to a game despite having little to no real gameplay on it.
>>12488101>level select in a game with neither branching paths nor reasons to replay a level>also cramped screenGreat improvement.
>>12487886Same here, though it was a nice touch how the secret warp room in CB2 is atop a tower and you can see the islands from CB in the distance.

>>12489997>Improved physics / level designNo.
>>12490030>it's not shitty and broken so it's le badNo.
>>12490056If you change the fucking level design it's not even the same game any more. It's a platformer, all it HAS is level design.
>>12487883Aye. It's the best.
I like the Rayman 2 level select.
>>12487883This is why I stopped playing ff at ff10
>>12489997>Improved physics / level designthe fucking arrogance in these words. I hope the dev gets cancer.
Buster's Hidden Treasure on the Genesis has this. Post more deep cuts.
>>12487886>>12489852>Be a brainlet>Can't comprehend the idea the Cortex Strikes Back is set in the same location>Can't connect the similar level designs, yet they still feel different>Out here still trying to force the Crash Bandicoot 2 isn't an upgrade in game mechanics (the most important part of a game) while still striking a good balance between casual and challenging gameplay.Quit with the Crash 2 FUD, its lame and zoomer coded.
>>12491641>zoomer coded.>how do you do fellow oldfags
>>12491641I don't really think the slide added much, a lot of Crash's appeal was in the simple intuitive controls that allowed the stage design to shine. Crash 1 has better stage designs and soundtrack, I also found Crash 2's gimmicks a bit excessive, too many recycled themes, and the overworld takes way longer to get into a stage.
