how do you justify the price of retro games?
>>
I don't have to, the market does.
>>
>>12488662
I ignore them, let the uncs waste their money "investing" in literal garbage and keep emulating.
>>
>>12488662
how fucking stupid are you people?
>>
>>12488662
By only buying games I want to play. Why care if some faggy redditor spends $2000 on Little Samson? No one actually wants to play that garbage.
>>
>>12488662
I don't mind the suckers market, I keep buying whatever the thrifts/fleas bless me with (last time was brand new Wii stuff, Jambo Safari, Mario Party 9, Fortune Street, Wiimotes Plus x2 and hookups for $25)

Only stuff I'd buy officialy are flashcarts, and I can wait all year until black friday. That said, there are a lot of cool cheap games even on ebay
>>
what are you talking about, OP? retro games are free.

Japanese games are still cheap beyond the true meme titles because baka gaijin can't handle moon runes. I had a bunch of factory sealed Saturn games arrive just yesterday that cost me peanuts on Yahoo Auctions (plus a new in box 3D controller and 4MB RAM cart).
>>
>>12488980
Most people purchasing retro games don't play the games they buy, so them being in Japanese is less of an issue than you think.
>>
>>12488980
Same, I'm not a crazy coomlector but over time I have bought a modest number of choice titles for super famicom and jap saturn I really enjoy. Jap prices are significantly cheaper, and I like action games rather than RPGs so it doesn't matter that I can't read the text. And in the rare event I need to read something I can just do real-time translation with my phone. Recently played through RE1 on saturn this way

By not being a american.

Why is it my job to justify them
>>
>>12488662
Im not retarded and know how and where to get things at reasonable prices, in addition to having got most 20 years ago.

>people who grew up on these games and weren't interested in collecting until now have begun taking an interest in owning physical media again
>a lot of these games appeal to a new generation of players, and these kids can't even relate to a time where these things where cheap
>people have more disposable income than they used to
>most games that were out "in the wild" (sitting at some forgotten about storage unit, being sold for pennies at countryside flea markets, being shoved off in a box for cheap by some mom getting rid of her kid's old toys, etc.) have been bought by collectors/resellers already, these people mostly "know what they have" and so even if they're not trying to rip people off they're still never going to price their stuff vastly below market rate
There's a lot of speculation and outright fraud going on for sure, but there's unquestionably a very high demand for these things and this past decade or so people have just had money to burn.

It is a big issue for a lot of collectors actually. If you collect for "clout", and a lot of people do, then you care about how others perceive the value of your collection, and for a lot of people buying Japanese copies of games is considered "cheating". Plus, a lot of collectors want the satisfaction of owning something that is worth a lot of money, even better if they bought it for less than it's worth. And the simple fact is that if for collectors owning Japanese copies wasn't an issue then those versions would be a lot closer in price to their NA/EU counterparts but the fact is that they still aren't despite also having gone up in a price a lot.

a flashcard can be a bit pricey, depending on the system, but you don't pay for the games, so there's that.
If you really want the physical games, never pay more than 20 bucks for it. Every game that costs more, is not worth it.

Its fine with me if less people are interested in the jap copies. It's saved me a lot of money not needing the us versions of games(especially when censored) when jap equivalent is so much cheaper. Bomberman II was the game that broke my "going for all NES carts" mentality when us version is 150 and famicom is 6(and includes crosses). I still want to have a physical collection i can pull from to play every game released for the nes, but they dont have to necessarily be the nes cart version. Plus i think its just neat to have games from other countries. I have some official hong kong release game boy games and modern stuff from korea, but includes english on it. Really glad i dont have the ratings autism of some collectors that only want ESRB copies of games. Knowing jap to play rpgs must be glorious.

Two ways:
1) I have a job.
2) I already have a large collection because I didn't start playing video games yesterday

No I agree completely, it's just weird that JP copies are mostly worth so much less despite the fact that most people only collect for the sake of decorating their shelves and not to play. Really highlights the validation seeking nature of collecting.
