I've never used mouselook either and exclusively play with a controller with D-pad only, so I'm in even more of a position to look down on lesser players (babies really) but it's to each their own.

It's a more impressive way to beat the game, but not necessary. Even using passwords, conserving continues helps a bit for the later stages.
