the Japanese name sounds way more badass but i guess it would have offended soccer moms or something so they changed it
>>12490046I wish SNK had made more games like this during their heyday. Cant believe this got ported to GBC when the Neo Geo Pocket was still in stores.
>jrpg about plucky kids killing God in the endMaybe the were just trying to hide the cliche
The boss battles in this game have some wicked sprite flicker.
pretty nice ARPG, not as long and grindy as Dragon Quest
SNK's last Famicom game as they were coming out with the Neo Geo shortly afterward.
https://vgmaps.de/maps/nes/crystalis.phpsome of the maps look like Total Annihilation maps. or maybe it's just me and I played too much of that game in my day.
>>12490046you don't even slay God in this game like Megami Tensi so fuck only knows what the title is supposed to mean
>>12490046Pretty uncommon to see an MMC3 RPG; most of them were MMC1 carts. It was nice though because you didn't have to hold down Reset when turning the console off.
>>12490280this was not a cheap game when it was new either, it cost like $62
The Famicom version had a debug mode you can activate with a code. It was disabled in the US version although the code is still present in the ROM.
>>12490280the faster screen switches are also nice because it doesn't take as long to bank switch the ROM on MMC3
>Chrontendo admitted that an adult won't have the patience for this shit the way your 10 year old self didYep yep yep.
beep boop
>>12490718he's right btw, this game is way too long and the item/control scheme bites the big one
>IT GOES ON AND ON AND ON>IT'S HEAVEN AND HELLYes that perfectly describes this game, although really more of the latter than the former.
>>12490128>not as long as Dragon QuestIt's at least as long as 3 and 4. They were really determined to make an epic with this one.
>town full of man-hating lesbians
I wonder where that Famicom RPG guy is? Probably off for Easter.
Crystalis sounded pretty cool as a kid too. And they probably made the right choice financially, no one I knew parents would've let them play something named God Slayer at the time. Anyways I loved this game.
>>12490818by the 2000s nobody would have thought a thing about a game with that title. in 1990 though...
>>12490820yes it was still the age of the outraged housewife complaining about any and everything edgy. 96-97 or so it wouldve passed.
>>12490297>>12490768as you probably know from SMB3 a 3 megabit NES game is going to be pretty huge and just when you thought you were at the end there's another 20 or so stages left
>>12490820They could have even put a leather wearing chick with huge tits and a sword on the cover by then.
Where to start with this one...>the game is long, really long>there's a lot of items and the manual doesn't really provide much information on what they do>some are only used for one spot in the game>the control scheme and inventory system are confusing>some monsters can only be hit with certain weapons and so you'll be switching to the menu screen and swapping them out constantly>you don't get a lot of magic point refills like some other RPGsIt gets on your nerves after a while and you realize >>12490718 is right and you aren't 11 and can spend an entire Saturday afternoon playing it.
>>12490069the GBC remake (oddly a US exclusive with no Japanese localization) is better in most regards other than the lower screen resolution.
>>12490920The music is also completely different and worse.
>>12490920The colors on that look like ASSSSSShttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xymfBIgyDH4Also fuck is up with the new story and that cartoony looking artstyle and wizard with 4 fingers? Bad enough OG Crystal is was badly localized already.
>>12490926Some of the NES music in particular the dungeon tune is just stolen from Dragon Quest anyway.
>>12490931Hi Contrarian-Kun
>>12490931>Some of the NES music in particular the dungeon tune is just stolen from Dragon Quest anywayi mean, why wouldn't it be?
>>12490718yeah he didn't like this game at all
>>12490775this game throws everything but the kitchen sink at you
>>12490920They also got rid of the enemies only being weak to certain weapons.
on the beat all Famicom games challenge they took just under 12 hours to finish Crystalis
>B to attack or use items, A to use spellsWould have been better if it was the reverse, feels more natural.
Dragon Quest 2 came to the US around the same time as Crystalis but was already looking dated as it was 3 years old and RPGs had advanced quite a bit in that time.
>>12490775the counter to Otaku no Seiza apparently
Not playing a Nausicaa rip off that doesn't have a cute girl protag
the catch is they all look like Lena Dunham
>>12490118just turn off the scanline limit on NESTopia
>>12491385I suppose you're also going to play with rewind mode and save states while you're at it.
As anon said, SNK's final Famicom release. They still had one more US exclusive NES game with Little League Baseball Championship Series. Most of their output on the console was only just ok and fuck those Micronics-produced ports of Ikari Warriors. Crystalis was a fine way to finish though, much like Rare with Battletoads after all the shovelware they cranked out.
>>12490069SNK had one other Famicom RPG, the earlier and fairly obscure Satomi Hakkenden. It makes sense that they skipped localizing it and did the far more sophisticated Crystalis instead.
I wish the God Slayer sequel for the Neo Geo got finished...
>>12491465Crystalis came out in the US only three months after it was out in Japan so it's apparent that it was always intended for an international release. A nice parting gift for the system before they brought out the Neo Geo.
>>12491475at least the game was still fresh when we got it as opposed to being years old like the Dragon Quest series and surpassed by newer RPGs
>>12491465this one is obviously much more DQ-like than Crystalis
>>12491342Closest we will ever get to one.>>12490153And the irony? The sequel was slated for the NG CD
>>12490046>the Japanese name sounds>posts pic but no soundWhy are desperate attention whore children so unsound?
>>12491385Sprite flicker is part of the NES SOVL
