Do you think that the retro videogames we play will still be around and important 100 years from now? Are we engaging with important pieces of human history by playing them or will all this stuff die out with us? Are retro videogame collectors the future elite wealthy class, similar to fine art renaissance painting collectors?
>>12490752They gonna still around but remember they're products of consumerism culture. Their value is subjective and attached to personal memories most of the time.
>>12490752Video games are treated less as art and more as disposable entertainment. Look at how little interest this board has in games from the 70s and the first half of the 80s. One day nobody will give a fuck about the games from the late 80s or 90s. And no, I don't think so about the wealthy art collectors thing, but also I don't have a very optimistic view of the future whatsoever so what do I know.
>>12490769>>12490752AI will be able to create retro games within our own lives. They will probably be more fun than the classics because it will be able to create what would be the equivalent of a sega genesis game the was in development for 30 years, in mere seconds. Every sprite made the highest standard, the code fully optimized at assembly level. But more still, the difficulty and mechanics fully personalized to your tastes. At that point, nobody is going to give a fuck about Alex Kid and Bonk 2.
>>12490782जी हाँ, मैं बिल्कुल सहमत हूँ।
>>12490782At that point you'll be too busy being a human CPU for your computer overlords, and considering you have zero appreciation for why people like classics to begin with it won't matter.
>>12490782>AI will do this>AI will do thatIdc about your personal headcanon, literally any retro game that has ever existed is provably better than whatever AIslop is/will be able to shit out. Prove me wrong.
>>12490770>Video games are treated less as art and more as disposable entertainment. Look at how little interest this board has in games from the 70s and the first half of the 80s.You are ascribing this to time when there is a far simpler reason, video games from the late 70's / early 80's mostly suck. Most retro games from the late 80's / 90's are forgotten by all but die hards too, hell they were forgotten at the time, because they sucked. Good things get remembered.
>>12490856So you don't actually like retro games, got it.
>>12490752I don't give a fuck what happens to human civilization in 100 years.
>>12490782Anything AI makes will be copying the source code of released games. So you will be getting le epic modern indie 2D pixel art, but under the hood it plays like nes Mega Man.
>>12490752Preserving most of these games digitally is trivial, so I'm sure ROMs and CD images and shit will exist for centuries and more.As for which will be remembered and played? I imagine some, this would be an easy thing to just explore for free for anyone who feels like it, and there's probably going to be lingering scenes for this kind of stuff long into the future (though not necessarily very big ones).>>12490769>Their value is subjective and attached to personal memories most of the time.True to an extent, but most of the really popular and well remembered games were simply also fun and enjoyable for what they were.

>>12490882Does he not like retro videogames if he thought Superman 64 was dogshit? You may not like it, but the absolutely basic and understated nature of 2600 era games are a hard sell to people who experienced much better.
>>12490752>Do you think that the retro videogames we play will still be aroundsure>and importantno, they're not even important now, why would they be a hundred years from now>Are we engaging with important pieces of human history by playing them or will all this stuff die out with us?Just play the games you like to play. Same thing if you collect historic art or antiques you don't just do it because of the historical value unless it's a pure investment, you do it because you like the things and have an interest in it.
>>12490752if there was only copy of a game, it could have the value of fine art. this is more like collecting rare coins
Just think about how many things that are over a century old that you enjoy now, OP. Then fifty years old. Twenty. A hundred years is a long time.
>>12490752Okay I think I cracked the pattern now:>Random anon (who we'll call OP to separate them) makes a couple of earnest threads about something>Another anon (who we'll call troll anon) either doesn't like whatever OP posted or says something profoundly retarded >People rightfully make fun of troll anon>Troll anon is now so traumatized from the initial thread that he makes similar threads to try and discredit the original anon who just wanted to talk about something >Rinse and repeat until people grow tired You are just as much of a blight on this board as you are in society. I hope you have siblings because I'd hate for your parents to only have you be their legacy.
>>12490752There are people who study the history of all creative mediums. People still watch films by Georges Méliès. I don't see why video games would be different.
>>12491280Definitely happening. I see them start new topics right after they get criticized for something. It'd be fucking funny if they didn't fill the board up doing it.
>>12490814You'll be suicidal in 5 years, tranny>>12490907It can play like any hybrid of games you want. It can play like games that were just tech demos but never fully executed. It can play like mega man if Capcom spent more than 6 months on it.
>>12490917Seethe tranny. You never had a place in society anyway.
>>12491297They make me second guess my stance on assisted suicide.
>>12490752Cartridges will be fine, disks might not work. Their value is subjective and irrelevant. There will always be people who are interested in the history of gaming just as there will always be people interested in the history of other forms of art, but their value as works of pop culture will plummet similar to something like Mighty Mouse, Betty Boop, or Bugs Bunny. Sure, Mickey Mouse still exists, but he's just there and nobody actually cares about him except for really old people or people who like old stuff.
>>12491421Not a terrible place to be, really. You know you're with the real niggers when it's a group of people who are interested in a thing which the rest of the world doesn't care about.
>>12491421>only people that care about x will care about xSo basically what retro gaming was like until the 2010s when all the investorfags and trendyjumpers showed up?
>>12490752No. It's basically toys. No one gives a shit about toys in a hundred years.
>>12490917Prompt:Make super Metroid, but not boringmake Mario bros 1 but not shitmake star fox, but it's longer than 5 minutesmake link to the past, except it's actually fun like minish cap.>proceeds to have the most fun he's ever had in his life
