Was Sega's biggest mistake being too ahead of its time?
>>12493167they needed something other than Sonic
you mean examples of SEGA just being bad at engineering, planning and understanding the market and consumer?the only one of SEGA's failures that was actually undeserved was the Dreamcast
>>12493167>too ahead of its time? That was Atari with the Lynx 1 year before
going through 6 D Batteries every 2 hours is ahead of its time?
>>12493167Game Gear's biggest problem is it didn't have internet custodial websites running narrative control for it 24/7 like game boy did.
>>12493212That's basically solely because of the backlight. It's a little flourescent tube. Cute but chomps batteries as if they were jolly jolly candies.
>>12493212You retarded faggot it uses AAs and they last significantly longer. And it comes with a wall power brick. Dumb monkey.
All you do is make Sega threads all day but literally nobody cares. They couldn't make good hardware, they couldn't make good games and they couldn't run a company. The fact that you think this piece of trash was ahead of us time confirms that you have mental illness.
>>12493167Are you talking specifically about the Game Gear? Then yeah sure. But for the home consoles I'd say it was quite the opposite. The Master System and the Genesis had primitive controllers, they misjudged the customer's willingness to buy a new console and made the 32X, then the Saturn had poor 3D capabilities and the Dreamcast didn't have a second joystick nor could it play DVDs.
GameGear has plenty of good games. It all came down to price. Gameboy was a cheaper alternative to buying an NES/SNES.Many people owner a Gameboy but not a home console. The Game Gear om the other hand almost feels marketed to diehard sega fans, and was priced like that too.
>>12493212YesThe Switch released with a 2 hour battery life too
>>12493212A backlit colored screen with software that looked close to the Genesis at times certainly was.
>>12493374Not too far ahead, considering a handheld PC Engine released the same year (even came out before the Game Gear in the states)
test
>>12493167Nothing that Sega made was ever ahead of it's time.
>>12493235>unhinged Nintendrone seethingWhy are they like this?
>>12493374Holy shit!
>>12493167Ahead of their time by releasing a handheld that you had to keep plugged in because it sucked off more batteries than your mother does cocks.
>>12493374Yeah, but did you even have on when it was released? It WAS baller, I played it plugged in 90% of the time.
>>12493234>And it comes with a wall power brickwow, such a great portable device
>>12493189they did well with the genesis and were fine for a while.the problem is that after that, the success got to their heads and started doing retarded shit like the 32x.
>>12493205The Lynx was a borked version of the original Epyx design. It had lower quality components with reduced power efficiency, and one of the retards at Atari redesigned the circuit board in a way which decreased battery life. Also Tramiel demanding abidextrous controls turned it into a bulky slab.
>>12493719Not like you're going anywhere fat boy.
They had absolutely no idea what to do with IPs that sold well on their hardware and made no attempt to secure them for long term income.Even Sonic is just randomly tossed out to make a quick a buck off the name. It's absolutely retarded business sense.
>>12493167No. It was not knowing what cancer their future fan base of children net yet born would be. Had they, they would have done the honorable thing and committed sudoku long ago to prevent this scourge from infesting the intarwebs.
>>12493336>random unprompted anti-nintendo seetheNDS
>>12494640But he's right. Modern handhelds (be they Switch or chink) have about the same battery life as a Game Gear when running demanding stuff. Fire up The Witcher 3 on a Switch and the Game Gear might actually outlast it. The only reason Nintendo's 90s handhelds had such good battery life is because they stole the power to illuminate for their screens from somewhere else.
Their biggest mistake was thinking everyone was after the "arcade at home" experience in the mid 90s.Pardon the food analogy, but most of their heavy hitters at the time felt like tasty snacks, while Sony and Nintendo wer providing hearty meals.
>>12494710>Pardon the food analogy>but as a heavy hitter of anything greasy my EBT cards are providing hearty meals.
>>12494640What, I just thought it was funny that my Game Gear gets comparable or greater battery life than a newer handheldI couldn’t reference the PSP because that thing lasted longer
>>12493167As certain wise man once said "An idiot admires complexity, a genius admires simplicity".SG-1000, Master System and Genesis worked because they were relatively simple and straightforward in their contruction, but after that Sega's engineers decided that they must show everyone their super special autism and shitted out ideas that either were non-viable due to lacking technology or literally very retarded. On top of that you had all the administrative issues and schism between American and Japanese sides of Sega, too.
>>12494710Correct. The arcade ports for the Saturn were high quality, but they were very barebones with few added features to extend the life of the home experience like Namco did with Tekken 3 for example.
>>12493234>And it comes with a wall power brick.that was sold separately
>>12493181It was less that they needed something besides Sonic and more that they needed a Pokemon.
>>12496328Game Gear was long dead by the time Pokemon became a hit.
Game Gear was doa because it was too expensive iirc. Only a few rich kids had them (I was one of them) but it burned through batteries and was a big too big and frail so we ended up not even using them outdoors which contributed to the game boy seeming even more prevalent.Mega drive (genesis) vs snes was much closer, felt like a 50/50 split to me, if not Sega being in the lead, but the mega cd and 32x were retarded, expensive, hardly any games so by the time it got to Saturn vs playstation everyone had lost interest in sega.
>>12496284>Correct>AI hot takeyikes
>>12496536>being able to write coherently is now considered AI-like Extremely grim.
>>12493212Yes, haven't you used a Switch 2 or a PC handheld?
>>12496556>coping is now copingAlways has been kiddo
Sega failed because Atari made a better handheld. Problem was they both drained batteries like a hooker drains balls and nobody wanted to spend money on batteries.
>>12493389es
>>12493374that's ugly as sin. looks like a knockoff handheld
>>12496847So what you are currently doing?
I will not behave like an autistic retard defending the Game Gear.I will do it for the Nomad or the Turbo Express, the real mvps of the era.
>>12496913>the Nomadchewed through batteries just as fast as GG but at least i could play more games
>>12493167Gamegear worked well off simply being better technology. Which worked in the 90s. Just having nicer graphics was enough to make a game successful even if it was shit to play. Gamegear had color, backlight, and a tv tuner. Who cares if it ate batteries or never picked up shit if you lived more than a mile away from a tv station. No one else could do that!
>>12496935>Game Gear had color, backlight, and a tv tuner… No one else could do that!Right, absolutely no other handheld on the market capable of that…
>>12496903>no uShoulda stuck with AI kiddo
>>12493167Thoughts on the Sega Nomad?
>>12493167The problem with the GG is the sports games that made the Genesis popular were all shit on the GG, most of them unlicensed without real teams or players while the console version had both and the FoV didn't loan itself to sports games presentation that was starting to mimic real life TV presentation.
>>12496970>>12496970handhelds that mattered
>>12497325Whatever helps you cope with the fact that the Game Gear was not groundbreaking in the slightest, I guess.
