I was always impressed when I saw an N64 with a differently-colored controller, but now that I know it's part of a set I wonder how that even came about.

It was definitely an interesting trend back then. I still generally prefer simple grey/black/beige stuff, though. I do have a bunch of different color controllers, the idea being that each player would be color coded. No transparent ones. I was just old enough back then to be aware of cons of such polymers. I also didn't really dig the look as much as opaque ones.

The controllers were also sold separately in every color.

I traded in a plain black n64 toward the DK64 set with the Jungle Green console/controller (game & RAM expansion pak incl). I still have it. Wish I'd kept the box though.

Would've preferred atomic purple.

Purple console -> purple pad
Red console -> red pad
Orange console-> orange pad
Smoke console -> smoke pad
Green console -> green pad
Blue console -> blue pad
Gold console -> gold pad

Black console but grey pad...

And why did they never release a grey console?

Nothing beats the original. It's my favourite console design ever, despite not actually liking the N64 library that much. It looked so sleek and futuristic to me as a kid.

i received the jungle green N64 with DK64 for christmas when it was new, simply amazing.
i had since lost that one but when i got another N64 years later i got another jungle green console.

For me? Regular N64 but with the following controllers:
Regular grey controller
Atomic purple transparent controller
Green controller
Blue, Red or Yellow controller
