I went straight into Tomb Raider Chronicles after finishing Tomb Raider 4.In hindsight it was a bad idea to go back to back, but TR4 ended up being such a disapointment that I wanted more but better.I ended up liking Chronicles more. I didn't like how the chapters being isolated meant that pickups didn't carry through or secrets were just to golden roses with no actual item pickups near them. I liked the stages a whole lot more than in 4, where I absolutely hated the "open-world".Now that I've played through the whole series on PSX, my ranking would be1>3>2>Chronicles>4
>>12493971Interesting rankings for a first timer especially if you played the PS1 versions. Were you going for all items/secrets?
>>12494165I've played 1 a shit ton when it came out, same with 2 and 3 though I never was able to beat them. 4 I skipped when I was a kid, since there was franchise fatigue and I didn't like that it was only set in Egypt. Chronicles I had played some when it was new.I didn't go for 100%, just beat them normally
>>12493971I'd rank them the same except that I'd still rank 4 above 5. Not that it matters much, since both games are fairly uninspired and symptomatic of a worn out dev team.
>>12493971I played them all on PS1 as they released. TR3 was my favorite for a long time but I think TR1 and 2 have aged the best. I rank TR4 so high because it feels like the culmination of everything good about the earlier games and I don't mind the backtracking.>1>4>2>3>5Your entire experience and appreciation of these games will change depending on whether you just play them casually or go for all secrets without guides. The original PC versions are the best in all cases. The remasters are interesting but ultimately soulless and make it harder to spot items since they added so much shrubbery and such, and classic mode doesn't look half as good as the original PC versions with maxed settings. I would only ever recommend the remasters for casual runs. I'd never recommend the PS1 version for first time players either.
>>12494254TR1 is best on PS1 though. So much more tense.
>>12494254To me TR2 has way too much combat against humans which is never fun.I dislike 4 since it doesn't have the same level progression of the other games. In TR1 if there is a mission where I need 3 iron bars, I know I find those bars in that level.
>>12493971>Tomb Raider 4 ended up being such a disappointmentIt's a good game, not sure what you were disappointed with. I was surprised with how much they managed to do with Egypt, in terms of varying the environments up, and making different desert areas look and feel different.
The atmosphere toward the end of TR4 is unmatched in any of the other games. Feels bleak as hell.
>>12494565I hated the open ended levels. Like that one level where you need to go to that turned over jeep to crowbar a pipe off it(?) Then get nitro off that other level, which you can make it into nitro to your bike. In theory that is fine, but I had no idea that those were my objectives for those levels. I thought when I got that nitro, that it was a bomb to kill that snake. There was no clear indication what you were supposed to do. It may sound like I want handholding, but what I want is a clear objective. I like linear level progression. I can see what people like about TR4, I just don't.
>>12494637That's perfectly understandable, it's good game, but you have to get past how utterly obtuse it can be and accept that you're going to get stuck and lost to a degree beyond even the other games in the series.
>>12494870It's still a good game. My disapointment came mostly from this being the one I never played and I have been hearing how it's the best one from time to time. The only thing that plain sucked about the game was those ropes. Fuck those ropes.
>>12493971I disliked TR4 too because it felt like it was made to sell guide books. Levels ate so confusing and frustrating. The slow pace didn't help
>>12495724I just endlessly replayed the tutorial level as a kid lmao. Jailbait lara is nice.
>>12495780Oh yeah, that was one thing I hated about TR4. No Mansion tutorial.
>>12494637There's a couple spots in TR4 where it was vague and directionless, but those were only a handful of spots in a 15 to 16 hour game.
>>12496374But guess which games didn't have those directionless moments? TR 1, 2 , 3 and Chronicles
>>12495724I can understand the dislike now but the backtracking to other levels was honestly a selling point at the time. You couldn't name a single PS1 game with an open world that big that wasn't just empty blocks (Driver). It felt huge.
