Saga in general except 2

Croc was considered a huge title and was pretty popular back when it released. Plus it sold 3 million on a system with a twice as large install base where games cost 1/3rd, AND it was released on PC, and even on Saturn. So taking all that into account, Banjo selling 3 million is far, far more impressive than Croc selling that much.

You could spin this argument to say that those 3 million that grew up with Banjo were left with a deep appreciation for game design while Croc was so mediocre that the 3 million that grew up with it never saw it as anything more than a silly child's toy they once played with and rarely thought about ever again.

I liked FF8 but sometimes I wonder if I really liked it or if I only liked it because online discourse had set my expectations so low that I was simply surprised that it wasn't as bad as people said it would be.
>>
>>12495001
For some reason, no one ever brings up how Croc's sequel sold compared to Tooie. Surely all those Croc converts came back for more?
>>
>>12494920
Well, good to see that Legacy of Darkness isn't a contrarian take and widely considered one of the best 'vanias ever made.
CotM is shit though.
>>
>>12495119

That's hipster core, not contrarian core
>>
>>12494920
I enjoyed CV64 and think that CotM was the peak of Metroidvania games.
Call me a contrarian but my love of these games happened before they could even be considered contrarian.
>>
>>12495001
Just because Croc sold a lot doesn't mean it made any kind impression on people. A little like how The Force Awakens made $2 billion at the box office and yet nobody gives a rat's ass about it.
>>
>>12495625
Yeah CotM is not contrarian. It's a pullback towards more classic difficulty that Sotn being easy for those who felt the Sotn model was good but too easy. Great, difficult boss fights. A solid second Metroidvania attempt. The real contrarian answer would be Harmony of Dissonance there's no actual reason to prefer that one of the 3 gba ones.

Croc is alright if you got it as a kid back then. Nothing mindblowing but servicable.
Same goes for stuff like MediEvil or Pandemonium

>3 million sold on a platform with a LOT of competition
:|

>3 million sold on a platform with very little competition and using first party backed marketing (but it's on Nintendo!!)
:O
>>
>>12495328
or you could point out the N64 had far fewer worthwhile games (and the games were more expensive), so PlayStation kids have their nostalgia spread amongst a dozen different games whilst N64 kids had to fixate on the same three titles because that's all they had. this causes an echo chambre around those handful of games
>>
>>
>>12496224
why did croc 2 sell so poorly relative to croc 1's performance (~3,000,000 to ~500,000)? surely kids that appreciated the first title would keep their eyes open for a sequel? croc 1 wasn't such an unremarkable experience to the point that most people didn't give a shit about the idea of playing a sequel for it, right?
>>
>>12496278
because Christmas 1999 was absolutely loaded with PS1 releases, including several other superior major platformers. how many major N64 platformers launched in the same window as Banjo Tooie?
>>
>>12495756
>Great, difficult boss fights.
too reliant on sponginess with not enough pattern progression/variety to fill out the fights. any boss where you've mastered a pattern to the point of tedium but it still keeps throwing it at you has a bit of a problem. they have good spectacle and the general increase in challenge is welcome but they aren't great.
>>
>>12495001
this applies to anything. sales often don't neatly match up with long term legacy in the zeitgeist.
>>
>>12495124
Its like the 3rd or 4th most popular in the series. Hating it is actually the contrarian opinion, 4chinz just happens to be bizarro world
>>
>>12496383
>too reliant on sponginess
Just say you don't know how to use subweapons and the DSS.
>>
Glad the tide is turning on Igaslop. The little cunt de-canonizing Chronicles, 64 and CotM shows how petty he is.
>>
>>12496018
More like 3 million sales on a console with a huge user base vs 3 million sales on a console with a medium user base
>>
>>12496397
doesn't matter even if you were right, a good boss doesn't let you indefinitely sit in a holding pattern. if your damage isn't up to snuff you should drown quick.

>CV64
I remember it not being received very well, but I never had an issue with that game and enjoyed it. I think weird camera angles is just something you had to accept in early 3D; that’s what most of the griping was over iirc.
>CotM
Greatest castlevania game imo. Subweapons, DSS, the card system, the music, the boss fights, and exploration, I loved all of it. For being on a tiny screen, the castle felt enormous as you explored it. Probably also the hardest Death fight.
>>
>>12495756
That's one of CotM greatest strengths, a difficulty that is fair, meaning that you can beat bosses purely out of skill and not because you found some op skill, along with the cards adding an optional but great variety of skills and weapons.
And unlike say SotN where they all just swing straight forward at varying speeds and lengths, the weapon variety gives plenty of reasons to use other types of weapons.
All other Metroidvanias usually suffer from being too easy and not challenging the player's skill.
>>
>>12496394
Thats a lie. 6,7,9,10,14 are way more popular than 8. 15 & 16 are probably way more popular as well.
>>
>>12496520
> All other Metroidvanias usually suffer from being too easy and not challenging the player's skill.
This. I remember playing super castlevania iv at a friend’s house when I was a kid and being bored by how easy it actually was. CotM has the right balance: you can win on pure skill, or you can exhaustively search every zone and collect op skills and powers.

>inb4 "people only hate it because AVGN said it's bad"
No, it's just the worst NES Castlevania
>>
>>12495328
Yeah that's me. I had Croc 1 and 2 as a kid but I barely remember anything from them. Really forgettable games.

>>12495982
Medievil was a million times more memorable than Croc. So many unforgettable moments.
>>
>>12498131
It is worst NES Castlevania, but it's not a bad game. James himself said that he liked it too
