What's the definitive version of Final Fantasy VI?

Is it this or just the gba version?

SNES. Any thing else is shit.
>>
>>12495391
Yeah, but what translation patch?
>>
>>12495404
This might blow your mind to learn. FFVI was officially translated for the SNES in English. It exists. You can buy a cart right now.
>>
>>12495404
None. Also why is that boxart the concept art from ff3

WHY IS THIS A WEEKLY THREAD

Aren't the corporate translations butchered dogshit though?
>>
>>12495437
No. The same corporate people that did the Jap version is also... corporate.

all english translations are butchered dogshit

So are all the fan translations.
May as well get the one that was fucked with the least, which is the one Square did.
>>
I don't understand getting autistic about translations like this, if you really care that much just learn Japanese
>>
retards
all of you
but not me

Original only. 99% of JRPG translation patches take stupid liberties and ruin the original spirit of the game.

Play the SNES release with this patch: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2095/

It might be a shock to some of you, but Romhacking.net stopped. Even after the site came back, the Woolsey writers are in shambles. Those little wannabe localizers did some soul-searching and most of them are gonzo. Yes, really. Now nature can heal finally.
These threads can stop now. Get over it.

>ruin the original spirit of the game
Ted really respected the original spirit of the game with all his hilarious references
>>
>>12497282
The reason people even care about it to this day is because of the translation.

Someone got paid to make them. In these situations that will usually mean it is better than what a Dunning Kruger weeb with an overactive headcanon did for free.

The three (3) Final Fantasy VI English translations:
>Squaresoft's Ted Woolsey original by one translator who made it in insane conditions.
>RPGOne/SkyRender fan-translation which was well-done hack-wise but amateur text-wise, comin' in swingin' to take the above to task!
>Square Enix's Tom Slattery retranslation by a guy who knew the initial rushjob had its problems but sought to elevate rather than teardown like the tonedeaf otaku in the middle tried to.
And that's it. There are no other translations. We have research assignments by people who didn't make it playable (kwhazit, luna...) and hack submissions that are some flavor of definitive-bugfix with text selectively ripped from the aforementioned three to suit the authors' tastes, but we most certainly don't have any more in-game retranslations.
>"We PREFER the term 'relocalization'!"
Yeah yeah, cool whatever, just don't quit your day job lol

>Square Enix's Tom Slattery retranslation by a guy who knew the initial rushjob had its problems but sought to elevate
And instead, he mostly just left the original script alone, only changing the most severe of Woolsey-isms and adding a few of his own (like the diss at the Cefca purists).

Super famicom is still definitive

NTA, but I wish I was in the industry in the mid-2000's to know what the attitudes were, because I can tell you now that the prevailing one is that corporations DESPISE fan translations. The instruction you get whenever there's a fan translation is never to make it too similar. Now considering Square Enix did just that with Final Fantasy V Advance (for better or worse), Mr. Slattery was probably under similar pressure for Final Fantasy VI Advance. Now imagine if the J2e/RPGe/RPGOne IV-V-VI hacks didn't exist when the GBA versions were made. Certainly they made some sort of impact, but whether that was positive or negative in the big picture is anyone's guess. All I have are educated suspicions, but I'd love to peer into that alternate universe to find out!
