Yup, It's peakDefinitely the best Contra
>boring memoshit >best contraDamn this series sucks
Unironically so. It's the only one I kept playing after all these years. It and the (sorta) sequel Uprising. The game is essentially a boss rush from beginning to end, you have four different characters with unique weapon loadouts, branching paths, multiple endings, and a kickass soundtrack that's one of the best on the Genesis. I know that reads like an ad spiel, but eh.
>>12495767exactly how many older games don't require you to recognize patterns, anonwhat other inane insights do you possess that can apply to every other game
>>12495776Lots of games have memo, there's difference between needing memo but then the game still has variance and challenge and memoing turning the game into a snoozefest
>>12495778Fair enough. I myself adapt pretty quickly to shmups and side scrollers, so a game has to be pretty unforgiving to really challenge me. I like Hard Corps for reasons besides difficulty. It's just cool.
>>12495767>I can't memorize stratsback to braindead jrpgs then! GO NOW! GO
>>12495721>repetitive ear-bleeding musicNah.
glorified boss rush, needed more core gameplay with real level design
>>12495721For me it's Shattered Solider>Best OST>tried to give the series an actual story>the story itself is kino af with Lance being an evil leader type but in the end trying to stop some corrupt shadow government>Lucia is hot afand then Neo Contra ruined it allhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6abxEDHdvc
>>12495721I'd like it more if I couldn't stop dying to Noiman CascadesOn more than one occasion I've gotten to him not losing a single life and blow all my continues on himI want to kill him in his house in california
>>12495942He's not that bad. Getting good at Hard Corp just requires you to nail down the fundamentals of dodging, sliding, and swapping between fixed and free shot. You also want a good D-pad with actual diagonals like the Genesis had.Browny is also the best choice for beginners. Smaller hitbox, easy to use weapon set with TWO homing options, and he has a hover jump that makes him very forgiving when jumping over obstacles and enemies. The kid brother choice when playing with two players.
Too much dead time where you're stuck watching some boss animations and can't shoot it. Contra 4 is the best Contra.
>>12495778>the game still has variance and challengewhat are some games that meet this for you?
>>12495721I always chose the dog man as my character
>>12495997This. That corridor boss takes like 10 minutes to beat and most of the time is you running around it because you can't damage it. The worst thing is that he's mandatory for four of the five endings.
>>12495721Friendly reminder to play the JP version since it gives you a few HP per life and is the way it was meant to be played. The western releases were only hard because they removed that to stop kids from beating it in a single rental. You're all seething over difficulty that wasn't even meant to be there.
>>12496437you can fix the US version with hacks.https://romhackplaza.org/romhacks/contra-hard-corps-fang-sprite-fix-hit-points-restoration-genesis/https://romhackplaza.org/romhacks/infinite-continues-genesis/
>>12496437> The western releases were only hard because they removed that to stop kids from beating it in a single rental.Backwards logic. Contra never had a lifebar, it was made easier for the more casual Japanese market. Japanese market which didn't give a shit about Contra compared to the US, they sold so poorly over there I personally believe it'd never have been a series without the US where it was a best seller on NES. Super C isn't even listed in lists of known Famicom game sales, that's how under the radar it was....Also everyone (devs, players, reviewers, marketers) wanted games to be hard in the west, especially on Megadrive which was considered the "hardcore gamer / arcade at home" platform. For instance western Megadrive-centric reviewers complained that SoR2 was too easy and that being able to spam Specials made the game worse, then SoR3 was made harder and had a gauge for Specials.
>>12496469>reviewersinto the trash it goes.
>>12496437Shitter cope. You don't have HPs in any previous Contra game, 1 hit kill is the standard for the series.
>>12496512and killing enemies by just stomping them was the standard for mario but that didn't stop them from making mario 2.
Super C is better in every way. Here's a ROMhack that combines the original and Super C into one game.https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/9150/Now that's unbeatable.
Nobody ever talk about Contra past 16bit. Are those other games good?
>>12495774I look like that and do that every day
>>12496916The 32-bit Contras are all dog shit and only the hardcore fans think the PS2 games were any good. Contra ReBirth is legit great though and Contra 4 is alright.
>>12496916DS Contra 4 is decent and so is Uprising but this one is too anime for someThe rest are mediocre attempts at 3D Contra or rehashes
>>12496945there is always the (not contra) hardcorps uprising (not retro).
>>12495928/thread
>>12496469>Also everyone (devs, players, reviewers, marketers) wanted games to be hard in the westI didn't, but no one ever listens to me
>>12497842
>>12495778If hard corps is to memory heavy for you you will not make it in the retro genre basically what is there to 1cc that doesn't need some memo?? You're stuck to just beating jrpgs and baby games
>>12496469It wasn't made easier for the Japanese, Konami made their games for Japanese gamers. Also as someone who has completed Hard Corps no damage, the game does work much better with an HP bar due to how memo-heavy it is, there is tons of instances where you are barely even able to react to something, it's just part of the learning process. Once you know the game, one hit deaths is fine, but while learning it's be frustrating and repetitive to constantly retread sections just to get a brief instance to learn(memorize) the newest pattern. The other Contra games don't really have this problem, they're shorter and more scrappy where you can still react and dodge out of sticky situations, whereas in Hard Corps you just get wrecked if you don't know the patterns
>>12495997>>12496364Finally someone else who gets it. Hard Corps has a huge amount of downtime and filler parts, it's a graphics whore game in a time before these really became a thing.
>>12498056>Konami made their games for Japanese gamers.Right... such as The Lone Ranger, Batman Returns (NES), Snake's Revenge, Mission Impossible, Roller Games, Monsters in my Pocket, Zen the Intergalactic Ninja, all unreleased in Japan; or even the first TMNT which was released in Japan but before TMNT was a thing over therewithout counting games like Blades of Steel or Jackal which in Japan only got throw away gimped FDS releases because they knew they wouldn't sell in their home country, while the US got the full versions of the gamesKonami precisely was the first Japanese publisher/dev to make lot's of games specifically targetted at the American market. Also I disagree with your assessment of the game balance. The thing about CHC is that once you learn something, it becomes near impossible to fuck up on that thing (versus the other Contra games in which even if you know what you're doing you might still fuck it up and lose), 1 hit death are fine because of that. It's a different kind of balance, all or nothing.
>>12495721Game would be 20x better if you could go to every single route in one play through rather than having branching routes and missing out on others.
>>12497853There's a reason these existed and had a market. Players didn't all want harder games. Cheating in video games has been a thing almost since the beginning, but it was more accepted back when it was mostly an offline activity.
>>12498023>If hard corps is to memory heavy for you you will not make it in the retro genre basically what is there to 1cc that doesn't need some memo?? You're stuck to just beating jrpgs and baby gamesThis if you're filtered by Hard Corps 1CC you should give up your retro-gamer-card and go to /vrpg/ asap and never come back
