single player racing games peaked here
>>12495996>2DHell nah.Racing games weren't even good before the polygonal era.Virtua Racing, Ridge Racer series, Daytona USA, Sega Rally, Gran Turismo 1+2, Need for Speed 1, 3 and 4, Colin McRae, Mario Kart 64, Destruction Derby 2, Wipeout series, Nascar and Indycar games by Papyrus, GP Legends, Geoff Crammond's Gran Prix series, hell, even Carmageddon and many lesser known arcade racers like Battle Gear and Dirt Dash - that's the peak. No 2D racing game comes close.
>>12496016I'm a big 2D guy, and even I agree with this. I still like and play a few 2D racers, but they really came into their own in the 3D era. The ones I still play are Road Rash, Micro Machines, Outrun 2019, Rock n' Roll Racing, Super Sprint, etc., along with a handful of arcade racers. Would I take any of them over something like Burnout 3 or F-Zero GX? Probably not.
>>12496016mode 7 is genuinely pretty good, the gimmick absolutely works for an arcade racer, it's not like the usual fakery that has a massive catch that ruins it.
>>12496031I don't like how mode 7 racers don't have any road elevation by design. It's the reason I prefer top down games like Rock n Roll Racing, Neo Drift Out and RC Pro Am.
>>12495996Mario Kart did. F-Zero very much did not.
>>12496048Isn't MK64 considered better than the SNES game?
>>12496054it really isn't desu. the snes version has better presentation and tighter course design. 64 has a lot of dead air straight aways unless you're cheesing snaking.
>>12496016>Racing games weren't even good before the polygonal era.You could say that for every genre
>>12496074Disagree. 2D and 3D fighting games are different enough to exist concurrently. Same with 2D and 3D platformers. 3D in strategy games is mostly pointless. Doom didn't allow the same movement and mapping freedom as polygonal Quake did but was great nonetheless. It's just the racing games that require 3D road surface and physics to feel good and believable
also the GBA Mario Kart Super Circuit is great>>124960162D games, as usual, get to the point much faster, while 3D games tend to have a lot more dead air and boring shit because of their need for "realism" or something and just how 3D space works
>>12496121Not really. Daytona USA and Ridge Racer are 3D. Name some dead air and boring shit examples from these games.
>>12496016>no mention of Hard drivin'Look another poser shit
>>12496142Hard Drivin sucks.
>>12496121>also the GBA Mario Kart Super Circuit is greatBased
>>12496074If you were retarded you could say that.
>>12496016>no Crash Team RacingHorrible, absolutely AWFUL post.
i expect some rubber banding in a racing game, but it's absurdly high in mario kart. spin out the "rival" racer earmarked for second and they shoot up behind you in secondsthe best single player racer has to be a gran turismo for the sheer amount of cars and events
>>12495996For me it's PS2 era Need for Speed Underground 2/Most Wanted and Midnight Club 3
>>12496132if you wanna be like that then I'd say the 3D F-Zero games and Mario Karts also blow those arcadey games away by every metric.
>>12496151your mom sucks shitter
>>12496029Road Rash is a pretty shitty example of a 2D racer moved to 3D. The 2D version was way better.
>>12496206this. mario kart has always been a tard gamelose the rubber banding completely or just play battle mode. the races are just stupid
>>12496206for the simple aims of mario kart it's fine, preferable even. the game assigns each character two rivals that will chase at your heels like a little mini sports rivalry. it ensures that the stakes are high and you need to win the tracks instead of just spreading points among the field.
>>12496307I like all of them besides Jailbreak, actually. I know Road Rash 64 looks rough, but it's a fucking blast to play. Neutral on the Road Rash 3D. Of the Genesis games, I probably prefer II over 3, but I like certain aspects of the third game. The upgrade system, extra weapons, the repo mechanic. The handheld ones are whatever.
>>12496216You're not being realistic with this claim
>>12496332I don't get why people hate on Road Rash 3, it's an improvement over fan favorite RR2. Must be the late release date, idk
>>12496452Don't hate it, but I didn't like the pre-rendered sprites as much as the more traditional style of the previous games. Soundtrack was mostly fine, besides Germany's theme kinda getting to me. I rarely play the original, and alternate between II and 3.
>>12496016Trvth nvke
>>12495996I liked F-Zero, Mario Kart not as much. Enjoy the modern Mario Kart though.
>>12496307>>12496332Can you explain to an outsider why 3D road rash is worse than 2D? RR3D on PlayStation was my first game in the series and I liked it a lot. Tried playing the Genesis games around the same time and they felt pretty rough in comparison
>getting filtered by mario kartlearn to powerslide and mini boost lol
>>12496070>better presentationyes those perfectly flat mode 7 roads are so much more interesting than fully rendered 3d tracks with actual geography.
>>12497526My reference is the original RR on PS1. It had gritty charm and personality, FMV cut scenes, unique characters and great sound. When it was translated to 3D all that was lost and it felt hollow in comparison.
>>12495996OP has immaculate taste.
>>12497535NTA and I don't like snes mario kart but there's plenty of space in racing videogames for games that don't have 'actual geography'. I always think much less of a person for failing to understand this and thinking that more complexity and realism is always better(regardless of what you may prefer personally)
>>12497738yes they have a place but he specifically said better presentation and I cant imagine how anyone would think a mode 7 racer looks better than a 3d racing game with interesting courses like kart 64.
>>12497758Basically everything on the N64 looked like shit. they spent that entire generation, learning how to make games not look like trash.
>>12495996Both of those are great games to Speedrun
>>12496206I only do time trials
>>12496016brainlet take
>>12498014Brainlet take is implying that Hang On is as good as Daytona
>>12497960How to get into speedrunning racing retro games? Where are the leaderboards?
>>12498020speedrunning is a mental illnesspick up a hobby that'll enrich your mind, instead
>>12498029yah, like shitposting on 4chan for 15 hours a day
>>12498029>pick up a hobby that'll enrich your mind, insteadhave a few of those, i need some autistic mental adrenaline fix
I just discovered Mario Kart 64 and Double Dash! Wow both are so goodHow do I do that slide turbo boost thing consistently?
>>12498875hop is your quick r button lift that sharpens turns resets direction after slips and sets up drifts without bleeding much speed in vs chaos it counters highspeed collisions and helps dodge bomb cars real cleanmini turbo kicks in from holding r while sliding flick the stick opposite then back smoke goes white to yellow to orange release and you get that sweet gradual top speed bump for a couple seconds chaining these on turns or even slight snake on straights builds flow that pure accel cant touchtogether they turn reactive driving into proactive mastery especially when braking to control slips or mushrooming out of trouble deeper than time trials ever show you feel the physics click and suddenly vs feels alive and technical
>>12498948Based
>>12498020Probably just start playing them, beat all the modes, try out all the characters. Meanwhile watch speedruns, join their discord and learn some strategy. After you start improving your lap times set small goals for each stage and learn some routes.I'd keep the play sessions short and sweet also try out diff racers, f zero and Mario kart have a lot of different versions, see which ones appeal the most And just have fun
>>12498958How to get a setup like that?
I started playing F-Zero recently and instantly loved it. For some reason non of the others in the series I've tried are as fun, they all feel worse and kind of boring.
>>12500029You think the original is better than X and GX? That's certainly an opinion.
>>12496016Racing games were the earliest games to benefit from 3D technology. If anyone disagrees, they're a faggot retard.
>>12500041Always depressing the number kneejerk posters who are just braindead-incapable of considering perspectives that aren't their own.
>>12500183I didn't dismiss it outright, anon. I was just surprised. The first F-Zero is a very bare bones experience compared to later games. Generally, GX is considered the peak of the series, so it's interesting to see someone prefer the original. There are certain series where I prefer an odd or earlier entry, too. That's not uncommon.
