How come battle city feel closer to arcade and board games than modern videogames?
>>
i dont know about the development, but ive spent a lot of time with these early namcot famicom games. seems like they were experimenting with how to do home games right. custom levels is a cool idea but not interesting in reality. i probably would have spent lots of time with it is i was a 6 year old japanese kid.

it's not until 1987 that third party Famicom titles actually get good when they have decent cartridge hardware and enough programming experience.

How so? You can make levels to either challenge yourself or your friends.

I enjoy the early ones, actually. battle city, druaga, and the penguin game.

meh, there’s enough variety in the premade levels that a custom map cant add a whole lot. its more just to dink around and show off what the fami can do.

they start having 1 megabit ROMs and mappers during 86 and in fact the FDS first allowed more than simplistic arcade games
