Another hidden gem from our friends at Tose
>>
hi Famibot
>>
>>12497287
TOSE did a million contract games, a few were good but most sucked and Bandai was just Japanese LJN.
>>
I'm of the impression that TOSE was better used as a collaborative developer, because stuff that they apparently developed alongside Nintendo, like the Game & Watch Gallery series and Starfy, turned out well. But when they were given free rein, yeah their output seemed to vary wildly. I wouldn't be surprised if they A, B, and C teams, and the money the contractor was willing to pay dictated which team was assigned to the project. Would explain why Bandai-TOSE games were generally of mediocre quality, since they cared more about pumping out as many licensed products as quickly as possible, rather than making sure each and every game was great.
>>
It's an ok Castlevania rip. The level design isn't up to snuff with Castlevania but it works for what it's trying to do and TOSE to their credit improved over the years and their stuff wasn't as dire as it had been back in '86.

they needed MMC1 for this? game seems like it could have worked as UNROM.
>>
>>12497359
Yeah, Tose aren't actually that bad, it's just that most publishers gave them no time and no budget
Micronics on the other hand...
>>
>>12497491
same as Atlus. they did the best they could with the conditions LJN gave them to work with.
>>
>>12497467
SLROM boards weren't that pricey especially by 91 and they didn't have to deal with graphics compression or bus conflicts.
>>
>>12497491
The main reason Micronics had such bad games is they used a shitty C compiler instead of assembly language and there are few more horrible things than trying to use compiled 6502 code.

No. See you at the bump limit.

>we have some nerve discussing video games on a video game board
>>
I am convinced.
I have now stopped liking the NES, and now realize ZX Spectrum is better.
Thanks OP.

>>12497624
that anon who yells about the Famibot or whatever is a troll who is trying to convince you that the Spectrum and Amiga are all you need

I always had a softspot for this game because of how apologetically stupid it was. The dialogue took itself so seriously and Frankenstein's Monster talking shit inbetween each stage was just the cherry on top. I almost wish this game was succesful enough to be a legit Castlevania competitor just to see how ridiculous the story and setups would get.
>>
>>12497287

So Frankenstein WAS the monster after all.
>>
>>12497501
There's a lot of really short MMC1 games that seem to not actually need it, others like TMNT definitely use all the available ROM space.

>hidden gem
There are no hidden gems left on the NES. There are three fuckin' pages of youtube longplays for this thing!
>>
>>12497847
Why did I never heard of this one hm?
>>
>>12497847
>>12498526
If it's not first party/Konami/Capcom/Square/Enix chances are it's probably a hidden gem.
>>
I'm sure that the password system is as broken as Metroid, because if you insert all D the game starts acting weird, softlocking you in a funny way after you kill the first boss.
>>
>>12497783
It has some good art for an NES platformer.
