The platforming gameplay is just perfect in this one

Shame about the tunnel sections though.
They're pure shooting, but there's no strafing controls where it's really needed.

BTFO by Crash.

The platforming LITERALLY controls like Bubsy 3D except you get a triple jump.

I played the hell out of the first level on a demo disc but never ended up playing the full game. That's it. That's the post.

Use short sideways hops to strafe. The indoor areas became far more tolerable once I figured that out.

This plays nothing like Bubsy 3D

Same devs and also JF has the triple jump, it doesn't control exactly the same as GS althogh yeah similar.
Another great game by them is Ghost in the Shell

I love this game. I tried making my own little indie game version in Godot and ran into some real problems once I upgraded the controls for modern mouse + kb / gamepads.

The automatic looking down when double jumping and the tank controls are sort of the defining features of the game and allow the player to go into a flow, where they just focus on moving around, jumping and shooting... it makes it feel like you're piloting a mech...

If you give the player full first person look controls with the right stick or mouse, the gameplay just feels off, it just feels like a generic PFS, you instinctively are focusing so much extra energy on looking around, deciding when to look down vs ahead, that the platforming starts to degrade. This makes the shooting more fun, but kills the first person platformer structure.

I've considered returning to tank controls, automatic looking down and adding on a lock on system for shooting..

I haven't quite figured out if this model of gameplay is fun enough to continue experimenting with... I think the most appealing part of original JF is just the whimsy and sci fi craziness of the levels. Tons of moving parts and fun little details to explore. btw the concept art is really cool.

I would add back the tank controls.
Maybe try dualstick controls and have autocamera engage when the right stick is neutral.

JF is very tonally different. More of a spiritual successor.
