The Video Game History Foundation acquired a prototype of NES Punch-Out pre-Mike Tyson with a lot of differences from the final version
>Pizza Pasta and Piston Hurricane from Arcade Punch-Out were planned for the NES version, but they got scrapped
>two new fighters called Rockyhead and Mongol Khan were also planned, but they were either cut or were retooled into other fighters

k, call me when they release the dump online.
>>

Does this make Punch Out a black box title since we now know a physical cart exists or is it still a regular title that was originally going to be a black box title?
>>
>>12499172
It's on the TCRF link
>>
>People didn't know about Punch Out after routinely walking into arcades hearing BODY BLOW BODY BLOW BODY BLOW.
It was a mystery for sure.
>>

cool

I think it's like it would have been black box if they hadn't delayed for the tyson licensing deal, but in our reality it is not.

>The cartridge was auctioned off at Heritage Auctions and sold for $45,000 to an anonymous user who graciously allowed the prototype ROM to be released.
It cannot be understated how much of a miracle it is that this ROM was actually released and not just trapped in some collectors dragon hoard forever.
>>
>black box label was printed c.1987 for a prototype
Fakest shit ever

That's a good answer I'll accept that.

We sure "Rockyhead" isn't von Kaiser? He has that 'rockyhead' tic.

not watching that channel

Cool thread, thanks OP.
Loved MTPO as a kid, but, for me, it's Super Punch Out.
>>
It's a nothin burger

jerky jeffrey and pizza pasta were scrapped in favor of grape soda and little marco
>>
>>12499536
Von Kaiser was already called "Von Kaiser" in the prototype, so Rockyhead isn't him.

I'm thinking he and Mongol Khan were either retooled for the SNES game, or the names were temporary like Mr. Sandamn.

There were black box games in 1987, but I agree it feels a bit fishy. The ROM presumably went through dozens of hands before it got released, so it'd be fair to say it's legit, but the cart itself is just way odd for a prototype. Why would they print something like this for a proto?

It does make more sense of the original Japanese art if it's real, you can see how it was redrawn from the proto version.
>>

Only the official release counts for this stuff
>>
>>12500076
I can see Hoy Quarlow being Mongol Khan, but I can't picture anyone from SPO being Rockyhead.
>>
>>12499170
Were those boxers cut due to hardware limitation? My only complaint for Punch-Out is having to fight Honda, Bald Bull and Don Flamenco twice.

Rockyhead = Nick Bruiser
