When I was a kid I thought this was the coolest power up but after playing through SMB3 again I realized that it controls horribly and isn't very useful for most situations.
>>12499489Wow, you made me remember I didn't even use it a single time on my last playthrough. I really liked it as a kid too but this time it just, awkwardly sat on the power-up inventory the entire time.
Best thing about Hammer Suit was virtually one-shotting Bowser with it.That's it.
>>12499489That's me with the frog suit. Only a little helpful in levels that are 99% water but most of the time I'd rather have a fire flower or nothing even.
>frog suit>you have no way of knowing if there's gonna be a water level before equipping it and it sucks on land >Kuriboh shoe>literally only found in ONE level and is immediately lost forever after one hitLooking back all the cool power ups in SMB3 were completely wasted.
>>12499521At least with the frog suit, if you keep failing a water level then you can use that to make it a little easier. The shoe was fun to use and definitely underutilized though.
>>12499489smb is the only good mario game
>>12499521>Can't deduce which level is going to be water by simply looking at the ones in the world map that are standing directly in the middle of the oceanNGMI
>>12499489It kills all the unkillable enemies, that makes it worth something.
>>12499509>>12499521The Frog suit was missing some means of killing things underwater. The fire flower was still better for the fact that you could still attack everything in water levels.
>>12499489it was the coolest because it was the rarest one.
>>12499489>I realized that it controls horriblyThe trick is that the hammer distance is (quite reasonably) determined by your velocity. The problem is that the suit was rare enough that it was hard to get a chance to really practice.>>12499521Kuribo shoe I don't really mind, my guess is it was an idea that wasn't really all that fun to play and didn't really fit in with the rest of the game, so they left it in one level rather than cut it entirely.>>12499550iirc the Tanooki statue is the only thing that can kill the roto-discs.There are some situations where the hammer suit is better than the tanooki suit but on average, I find Tanooki is by far the most useful power-up in the game if you aren't a speedrunner. Being able to halt your jump mid-air and immediately go straight down, invincibly, is rather OP.
>>12499605>Kuribo shoe I don't really mind, my guess is it was an idea that wasn't really all that fun to playi thought it was fun

>>12499489It kills Twomps and damn near everything though, making it a great power up still.
>>12499521SMB3 having all these specific power-ups but you're just using the normal tail and fire flower for 99% of the game really is a shame. And then Mario World, rather than fixing this issue, just cut down the amount of power ups again.
>>12499521I kind of wish they experimented some more with more one time powerrups like that
>>12499605you're really gonna diss my boi Kuribo shoe like that
>>12499950SMW just trims the fat by buffing the Raccoon tail and replacing all the half-baked powerups with Yoshi.
>>12499609Sure, it was in the level you used it. And I'm sure you can imagine other scenarios where it might be good. But it changes the run and jump physics that 99% of the levels are designed around. And it lets you walk on those chomper plants, which would trivialize a few levels in world 7.
>>12499950Skill issue. If you avoid taking damage you can keep the special power ups a lot longer than the typical shitter.
>>12499950Mario World does the same thing with Yoshi. blue and yellow Yoshis only appear in one Star World level apiece. it also does it with enemies, with blue and yellow koopas also only appearing in 1-2 levels.
>>12500191It's in a few e-reader levels
>>12500234I always thought that after unlocking the colored Yoshis in the star world they should have spawned randomly from eggs instead of always being the green one.
>>12500234You can go get the special Yoshis whenever you want if you go out of your way for them, rather than something locked behind rare conditions and lost easily. They are a secret unlockable tool that takes advantage of the world map mechanic. I don't think it's the best idea ever but it's clearly the intent behind them.
>>12500282the star world levels they're in don't become available until late in the game, and they're not really useful for anything. blue yoshi is a less convenient version of the cape and yellow yoshi lets you stomp.
>>12500267I could swear the GBA port does exactly this after you complete the Special World.
>>12500294>the star world levels they're in don't become available until late in the gameYou can reach the Star World early in Donut Plains and go all the way through the Special Zone before you beat the second castle.
>>12500313realistically someone playing the game for the first time isn't going to be able to do that.
>>12499489I'm really thorn on some of the powerups in smb3on one hand, mechanically, having powerups that I can rarely find makes me less likely to learn how to use them or even just use them. if I get the hammer suit or the frog or that statue tanuki or whatever, they'll just sit on my inventory (I know people who are good at video games do use the hammer suit in speed runs, apparently)on the other hand, it makes the world feel bigger and more mysterious. like anything is possible, who knows what weird powerups there might be that you haven't found. there's a fucking boot you can ride on. for some reason
>>12500323I accidentally found the Star World on my first playthrough as a kid.
>>12499498Ducking into your shell also blocks fireballs.
>>12500380Which would be useful if more enemies used fireballs. Piranha Plant fire is already easy to dodge, Fire Bros. only exist in two screens out of the whole game, and it doesn't block anything big like Bowser's fire breath
>>12500390It also stops your momentum
>>12499489As a kid I always thought the frog suit was the coolest thing in the game, even now despite it not being that useful I still think it's cool as fuck and Nintendo definitely underutilised it.
>>12500380Whilst we're doing trivia, you can jump on Bowser, and you'll just bounce off. Bowser's legs also have no hitbox, there's a bunch of odd things about the Bowser fight.
>>12499495Yea, becuase you only get one snd font want yo waste it. Than you get to a hard area where you keep dying, and you use it for the most glorious 30 seconds before you die again becuase it is not that good.
>>12500394Its underrated. Its great for water levels. You just gave yo accept its a one time use on a easier levrl.
>>12499521Yeah but the rarity is what gave them charm. If you could use them at any time, you’d realize they all suck ass.
>>12499541SMB3 is the best mario game. World is a better 3.
>>12499509Yeah, the Frog Suit just sucks. Hammer Bros. Suit lets you kill a lot of things that are usually unkillable.
>>12500294>blue yoshi is a less convenient version of the capeit's much much more convenient if you suck at the game.
>>12500624>Whilst we're doing trivia, you can jump on Bowser, and you'll just bounce off. Bowser's legs also have no hitbox, there's a bunch of odd things about the Bowser fight. He can jump super high. I tried to cheese him with the P-wing once and he just jumped off the top of the screen and hit me. Serves me right.
