what is your honest opinion on fan translations and undubs?I have been playing a few of them and they have been quite great aside from a few hiccups here and there. Also post some that you ejoyedRecently I tried>both yakuza psp games, the main story and most of the side content is translated aside from a few gambling and hostess minigames>Yakuza 1 and 2 restored patches, where they add the Japanese dub to the American version and dialog that is close to the what they are actually saying>Arale / Dr. Slump game on psone, very charming adventure game.
>>12500381>yakuza psp gamesnot retro fuck off
>>12500406my bad. but they were the reason I started looking more into those.
>>12500485ignore the autist, just mentioning something isn't a crime
>>12500381>what is your honest opinion on fan translations and undubs? Why would anyone be against it?
>>12500535it is more like opinions on the quality of it.
>>12500381I like fan translations so I can play games I never had access to. I think undubs are fucking retarded.
>>12500541Undubs are great because I don't have to deal with the terrible 90's and 00's dubs, get that shit out from me.
>>12500541I have been enjoying the fuck out of the yakuza restored patches. The OG japanese voices + dialog the resembles what they are actually saying is pretty fun. Sometimes it is the only way to enjoy some games with the og japanese voices without having to actually learn it.
>>12500543>>12500545The bad dubs are part of the appeal to me
>>12500548I understand that but since I am not american and neither played most of these games I don't really have nostalgia for the western dub
>>12500381Fan translation or not, you're putting a lot of trust in the translators since everything you read is filtered through them.A positive is that fan translations are usually less constrained by publisher demands in the name of profitability, censorship, baggage from previous localization decisions, and deadlines. On the other hand fan translators are random guys on the internet who could either be brilliant or retards with Google Translate.A lot of "retranslation" patches are just the existing English release crossed with a Legends of Localization article plus arbitrary dialogue and gameplay changes to the modder's taste.Undubs usually just end up being dubtitled where the text and speech are barely related.lmao fan dubs
>>12500602reminds me of the Phantasy Star "expanded" translation that was glazed a lot when it came outdude basically added a bunch of lore he came up with himself, turning it into his own fanfic
>>12500614I mean, that could be either cringe or based depending on how good it is and if the dude was upfront about it
>>12500381I need a proper Alundra translation with the original jap balance. Maybe its just me and me alone but I dont think surfer dudes are very funny, sorry to say this.
>>12500602>A lot of "retranslation" patches are just the existing English release crossed with a Legends of Localization article plus arbitrary dialogue and gameplay changes to the modder's taste.Anon, the cheatcode to those hacks is to NOT call then a "retranslation" - you call them "relocalizations", compile a crapton of other people's irrelevant non-text-related junk as leverage, submit a patch as a "Hack" instead of a "Translation", then go around on social media spamming and don't bother to correct people who think you did every aspect of your "translation" by yourself so you can get your name out there and use it to collect patreon neetbux talking about 80's cartoons or whatever, and if someone else DARES challenge you, make a tiny update that does nothing up bump your submission back at the top of the site's Hacks list.
I always use undubs if available.
>but the official translation was lame it included a dated Bill Clinton joke and...And the original Japanese text didn't have bad pop culture and current events jokes in it?
>>12500886Sometimes it does, and it flies over those smugfucks' heads. Sometimes it doesn't though.
>>12500886turns out they often did and were not actually brilliant, deep works of literature
>>12500548I remember my friend telling me how FF7s terrible translation was part of its charm. I'll just play the game in Japanese thanks you can jerk off over your beautiful duwang in your irony vortex somewhere else.
the real handicap was not the content but the fact that English text takes more space so translations had to often be significantly truncated to fit in the ROM
>>12500897A joke about a Japanese boyband from the early 90s nobody remembers anymore is not any better than a joke in the translation about Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.
>>12500919If you are going to invent a fictitious scenario in your head why not go further? How about this hypothetical japanese pop culture reference is actually much worse than a bill clinton reference? Maybe the original japanese is actually a disgusting recounting of a bowel movement the writer had the previous day and the benevolent ted woosley actually improved the script?
>>12500902Go for it babe
>>12500934I wish we had a vid of that weeb who allegedly cringed Woolsey IRL, sounds a lot like you.
>>12500942I wish we had a vid of the hypothetical japanese pop culture references you insist on there being. You feel so strongly about it surely you have the comparisons at the ready.
>>12500942>>12500949JUST FUCK ALREADY.
>>12500535That's a good question. Apparently half this board is considering how much venom is spewed whenever a new one comes out.
>>12500485Don't mind him, it's just ONE autist who for some reason gets unreasonably angry over the mere mention of post-2000 games here. It's not the end of the world, you're fine.
>>12500381Imagine playing translations... Literally cultural vandalism.٩(๑•̀ 3 •́ )۶
