What makes Gen 1 sprites so badass?
>>
>>12501586
Not having marketing forcing every Pokemon to be homogenized into a single on-model design, for one thing.
>>
soul. no other gen can compare
>>

The games had their own art style. Later they changed the game art style to match the anime. The game art style was much better.

They were making it for young genki boys at the time, unlike the following sister generation.

I love this Mewtwo sprite. Makes him feel like the powerful genetic abomination monster he is. Later versions make him feel like a more refined psychic in comparison.

The original Green sprite feels like halfway between

Makes sense

That's a sick beta sprite, im glad we got the finalized version though
>>

Maybe now but back then that's just the standard pose for someone that's a strong and brutish. I see it and I think of Wolverine or Goku, now I guess you could look at it and see caveman spongebob but that was a pretty common "I'm strong and I'm gonna fuck you up" pose
>>
>>12501586
Because the NA/EU versions got the MK2 version of the front sprites.
>>
>>12503313
I like the early Blue sprite the most. The other poses are cooler, but the early Blue sprite has more of a human-like personality to it, which fits with how they characterized Mewtwo in other media (as in, he basically acted like a human).

It was all the great core concepts of the series at their purest before it became overly commercialized and they realized they could just shit out round chibi animals that are much cheaper to make toys of and animate.
Then they randomly decided to be jewish and push the ugliness mandate for no reason, because things aren't allowed to be cool or beautiful without having some big glaring flaw.
>>
>>12503312
you should eat more fiber
>>
>>12501586
they didn't really hammer down the designs yet so they're more rough and inconsistent looking. which has its own flaws, but it really gives them a style unlike any of the other games.

Thank you for this reminder

the way it became so 'unified' is weird to me. all the magazines at the time said Pokemon Red/Blue was about 'Ash' and his rival 'Gary'.
then Gold/Silver made it clear: no, that was a guy called Red and his rival Blue. now they lived in a place called Kanto. the anime is a separate story. gotcha.

now, they've undid their own corrections. e.g. the monsters actually say their own names, that's 'canon'? they 100% do not do that in the games.
