Shinji Mikami on why American gamers prefer harder games than Japanese
>>
>>12501692
I thought the Japanese version of most games were more difficult.
Half the time localizers dumbed a game down for american players.

>Interestingly, the punishing difficulty level was less of a factor in the Japanese version of the game. Instead of experiencing one-hit kills, Japanese players were given a short life bar that made for a slightly easier game. We have to ask why this feature was removed for the export versions, but [director Nobuya Nakazato] quickly corrects us.
>"Actually, the reverse is true - the energy bar was added to the Japanese version," he explains... "At the time, Japanese gamers were mainly into 'thinking' games, such as RPGs and strategy games. Games that demanded quick reflexes, like action games and shooting games, tended to be somewhat less popular."
>>
>>12501692
American audiences are more persistent, but his statement that American gamers prefer harder games has been demonstrably proven wrong with the advent of non-thinking movie games devouring the industry with slop like Last of Us and Uncharted.
>>
This is for the sperg who says le youtube man made up the rental thing
>>
>>12501712
Not like it never happened, but all of the time you see zoomspergs indoctrinated by the millennial nintendo youtuber cult bitching about any game being hard as 'because of muh ebbin rentals'. Saw one do that just the other day about CV1

Exact opposite of what happened. Why was he wrong regarding Sega and PS2?
>>
>>12501696
Same Miyamoto that thought SMB2 was too hard for dumb Americans
>>
>>12501720
fuck off sperg

source?

>>12501725
wish i was a japenese game dev in the 90s. playing the most kino era of games while straight swimmin in soapland pussy.
>>
>>12501712
This sounds like an hear-say variant of the story I've seen in other sources. Like how details get lost with times and others are completely made up, so the same story is different.

What I've seen is when it came time for testing the devs couldn't beat ANY version, either JP or US (and there is factual proof that shows both versions already existed by then), and that's why they added auto aiming to the JAPANESE version.
For the record at the time this happened the game balance was completely different from the game we know, the game went through lot's of radical gameplay chances very late in dev, they changed things to the last minute
>>
>>12501695
>I thought the Japanese version of most games were more difficult.
A myth that has stuck around for years almost entirely due to the tale of how Mario 2 was "too hard for American gamers" which is why they reskinned Doki Doki Panic. Even that story isn't really true, but it established this myth that Americans needed their games to be made really easy while the Japanese were these hyper gamers.
>>
wow playing games for fun instead of trying to prove something
nips are faggots
>>
Are you people still pretending to identify with or rail against a national spirit with regards to Americans or Westernized Japanese? Man, I wish I could maintain delusions, seeing clearly is tiresome.
>>
>>12501692
How things have changed

mishima was gay, so i can believe he joked about it.
>>
So american gamers are performative gamers while japanese gamers are more sincere.
Japan still has the best superplayers btw
>>
Most Japanese are rank casuals who only like RPGslop and other casual gaming. The hardcore shmup and fighting game people are a minority.
>>
>>12501978
They probably just didn't localize Mario 2 (the lost levels) because it's actually quite shit.
>>
>>12502747
Most Japanese gamers just play gatchaslop at this point.
>>
just because he has opinions doesn't mean they're right
>>
>>12502747
>the country that created the games is "casual" at them
god I hate western suburban incels so much
come to japan faggot we'll see how casual you are

These threads always sucked and reeks of burgenistan insecurity. Shame on you.

Then why did Unlimited SaGa flopped in the west and put the entire franchise on ice?
>>
>>12503279
Where the fuck do I go games are not difficult in a fun way
>>
>>12503279
Well for starters, it wasn't called the Unlimited Final Fantasy Legend or SaGa Unlimited Frontiers.

Hard games are annoying as fuck when you work 12 hour shifts. I need to relax not stress over finding some faggot puzzle solution while not wasting ammo. Resident Evil sucks
>>
>>12501704
same shit to this day they never got into fast paced shooters.
>>
>>12503279
That game isn't even difficult, it's just pretentious
>>
>>12502905
alright davido kun
>>
>>12503298
Take your meds.
>>
>>12501692
>then we modify it for the American market afterward
The "modification" here, in the case of Capcom's releases, refers to shit like reducing your damage output instead of actually meaningful changes, fucking up the pace of the games.
>>
>>12503279
Squeenix forgot (was too lazy/cheap) to release the actual guide from Japan in the west.
>>
>>12501692
>Japs prefer not to waste time on pointless shit and just want to enjoy the story or have fun
>Americans prefer to smash their heads against a wall for 12 hours for some random achievement nobody gives a shit about
This actually explains why FromSoftware is so huge in the West. They’ve mastered the art of taming beasts.
>>
>>12501905
>the game went through lot's of radical gameplay chances very late in dev, they changed things to the last minute
I can't say for sure about the autoaim part, but this is 100% true and verifiable. Look at how this review copy is completely different from the final game.
>>
>>12503790
>green blood
>lighter in the dog hallway
>the wood emblem in the art room
>the ink ribbon (singular, they were one per pickup in this version) in the big blue jar
>the handgun magazine in the back of the art room
>>
>>12501720
The truth is changes to US localizations were usually based on feedback from Japan and a game could be made harder or easier depending on whether Japanese gamers thought it was too tough or not enough.
>>
>>12503706
Eat your peas
>>
>>12501978
It's more based around how Square would dumb their games down when localizing them. Notably Final Fantasy 4.
>>
>>12504016
I was told a while ago that Easy Type was already going to be a Japanese release in spite of any US version also being localized simultaneously. Apparently Japanese people complained about FF4 being too difficult on its original release when they all wanted a nice easy RPG to mindlessly grind in, and they decided to just use the Easy Type version they were making to combat the criticisms as the US version.
>>
>>12501695
lol they regularly made overseas versions harder to hinder the rent market for home games and to please operators since western arcade culture was about pumping credits for the clear
>>
>>12503279
Because SaGa is just aping the same U CAN DO ANYTHING!!!!11!!!1! gameplay that you can already get in WRPGs
>>
>>12503790
I don't know if all the magazines got the same revision, but some of the reviews also talk about how it's a pain in the ass to remember which box you left a certain item in. So at least some of them had the de-linked item boxes. I think I had a Game Players issue with a strategy guide that also talked about getting the Dum Dum rounds in the Library. Those were also cut from the final game.
>>
>>12504024
Yeah, but that one event created the myth that Japanese versions of games were insanely hard and they had a policy of dumbing things down for the fat retarded roundeye gaijin pig monkeys that persisted throughout the 90s and 00s.
>>
>>12505374
Never mind that the Famicom release of Battletoads was nerfed from the US one.
>>
>>12503790
>>12503792
Here's one from Gamefan in March 96. I'm not going to go through the whole thing room by room, but notice the grenade rounds on Kenneth's body and the blue herbs all over the mansion. Also note that it only took 3 crests to open the Garden door and the painting puzzle gave you a first aid spray.
