If I had moved to Chicago like all my college friends that'd have been a thing, but I got a rural job 1,000 miles away. There aren't places to meet people outside of cities anymore.
That said modern games do multiplayer better and often exclusively are multiplayer.
Tbh split screen low frame rate where Johnny would screen watch wasn't that fun even in the 90s.

did this in the early 90s with mortal kombat and street fighter, had a snes and genesis and friends stay up all night eating candy and drinking soda playing the games. another time it was a nes party, we all brought our games. i remember being up all night playing the immortal after everyone else passed out. did the same with super empire strikes back, up all night beating that with friends. pizza and soda and games
