>slog through an hour in a dungeon with the slowest movement speed ever in a JRPG
>randomly encounter an enemy that does 2 billion damage, completely unbalanced in every way compared to every other enemy at this point
>escaping only works 10% of the time (generous estimate)
>lose progress for no good reason
What a piece of shit, seriously. I guess to be fair nobody ever recommends this game, for good reason. But my god is that awful design.
>>
>>12503905
it’s for hardcore rpg fanatics, and you are a big pussy who wants his hand held every step of the way like some japanese bitch ass gamer. this game is still praised and recommended, but for not bitch ass fags like you
>>
>>12503918
I like RPGs. I just don't like abysmal game design like losing hours of progress because of pure RNG.
>this game is still praised and recommended
By who?
>>
>>12503925
that’s just how these games were made, these old school rpgs are not the same as final fantasy. getting killed because you took a wrong turn was part of the excitement back in the day. losing hours was no big deal, you bought a few games a year and had time to play them and get your money’s worth and dying was part of it. especially with rpgs. you can’t compare it how gamers today want it all smooth and to waste no time and just fall over and be done so you can say you played and beat it. phantasy star ii is praised in real conversation about the best rpgs, either in terms of challenge or story. it’s from a different era. go play secret of mana again or whatever shit is more your thing. but don’t come in here with that gay shit saying there’s no love for ps ii. that’s horseshit. you’re just miffed. don’t lie on top of it to bolster your claim that it’s bad design. it isn’t. it’s design for a game you don’t get.,
>>
>>12503939
The first game wasn't like this, I played through all of it before starting this mess. Dying because some retard game designer put a completely unbalanced enemy in the wrong zone is horseshit in any year.
>>
The girl at the save station is so fucking cute. I want to marry her.

Since I decided that I'm dropping this piece of shit I figured I might as well look up how bad it gets. I have no words. This is actually somehow worse than Secret of Evermore.
>>
>>12503925
Just ignore these two. >>12503918
>>12503925
They're just baiting you poorly.

Why not just save outside of the dungeon?

I was. It doesn't matter when you get lost in the awful, awful, awful excuse for dungeons. They "design" levels like this and then manage to fuck up the camera so hard you can barely see in front of you, then reset the camera after a battle just to really disorient you. Unbelievably bad even considering the year it came out.
>>
>>12504028
Actually quite decently designed now that I'm looking at it. Also isn't that the very first dungeon of the game?
>>
quitter, how pathetic.

>Actually quite decently designed now that I'm looking at it.
Now imagine it with random battles every five steps, the camera zoomed way the fuck in, the camera barely showing two pixels ahead in the direction you're moving, and with an extra layer of bars in the foreground partially blocking everything.
>Also isn't that the very first dungeon of the game?
It's the second one, the exact moment anyone reasonable realizes the game is utter shit.
>>
>>12504041
>Now imagine it
No need, I played it not too long ago. The dungeons are really pretty simple.
>>
>>12504046
They simply suck, horribly bad. How they managed to make a top down perspective more disorienting and confusing than first person is a feat of sheer awfulness.
>>
>>12504047
Sorry you didn't like them! I think there's a hack or two that speed up the walking speed and adjust the camera. Either way I'd rather have PSII's dungeons over PSIII's.
>>
>>12503982
Hahahahaha
>>
>>12504115
I was holding off on watching Jason's video until I played the game myself, but since I'm never touching this abomination again as long as I live I decided to watch it. Good video as usual for a game that just sucks.
>>
>>12504117
He also brings up a hood point. The contemporary competitor for this is FF2 or maybe ff3. RPGs are still figuring out how to do this right. 3 also sucks but 4 is great.
>>
>>12504123
Even for the time these are some shit tier maps. Nobody in the history of humanity has enjoyed teleport mazes, not a single soul.

For people who love big complicated mazes, it's fun. I like the game, but usually I'm more in the mood for Phantasy Star 1 or 4. It's better than 3 though. PS3 has some cool ideas but the execution is lacking.
>>
>>12504149
Yet they kept making successful series.

>>
>>12504159
Wizardry may have basically invented dungeon crawlers, but the old ones are terrible to play.
>>

Dragon quest 3 released in 1988 and it's absolutely amazing ...
>>
Always great to see retards get filtered by Kino Star 2.
>>
>>12504149
I enjoy them in the Megami Tensei games, because with the mappa spell you can eventually guess where you are.

That is unless they teleport you to other places that have identical layouts, that's the only times I hate it.
>>
zoomers are best dealt with like cattle, hold the animal down and slit the throat and slowly drain all the blood out

>>
>>12503982
This is all optional. If you played it like a 10 year old that just paratrooped to the bottom floor over and over then cast the escape spell you'd get 3-4 endgame items in 10 minutes.
>>
>>12504149
In the other maps they're not teleporters, they're staircases. The ikuto chart is for a one off "pachinko" maze where you fall to the bottom floor through a series of branching pitfalls.

Its always amusing to see people think their dislike for something is universal. If a single soul (like me) disagrees with you, you're fucking wrong.

Sorry you got filtered lil bro, doesn't mean the game is bad
>>
>>12503982
>>12504115
This makes it look way more manageable. So it's not some sprawling dungeon, the hole you drop down locks you into only a few others until you reach the bottom.

I like how they say this as if it's a valid excuse.

"Yeah we left maybe the single most important design decision up to a new guy and then never once bothered to check in on his work or see if he was doing things correctly so by the time anyone realized he'd completely gone insane it was too late."

Like, I'm pretty fucking sure that's not how it works. So what, just tell the new guy you don't know very well "hey, go make the maps" and then he disappears into a cave for a few months to work in secrecy? The director or producers never once check in on the new guy just to make sure he's on the right path? It's all up to this one guy who works unsupervised and If everything he made was just a complete pile of useless shit they would cancel the game, I guess? My ass.
>>
>>12505365
it was 1988, like 4 years earlier Warner Brothers destroyed one of the most valuable subsidiaries in the world with billions in valuation by having one guy make Pac Man in a month
>>

Assuming Jason Graves, the YouTuber
>>
>>12504117
>I was holding off on watching Jason's video
thats so funny that the only reason you wanted to play this game was so you could watch a video and you couldnt even get 10% through it before quitting.
>>
>>12505449
I generally don't watch videos on games I plan on playing. It only takes about an hour or two of Phantasy Star 2 for one to realize the game is irredeemable dogshit.
>>
>>12505301
>In the other maps they're not teleporters, they're staircases.
The fact this needs to be explained should tell you how atrocious the game is.
>>
>>12505483
Or how dense you are. It's pretty evident from just playing the game that your relative location on a floor stays the same after going through a chute, so they obviously aren't teleporters.
Or more likely, you're just stirring shit about a classic JRPG and you didn't even try playing it.
>>
>>12505615
Not really. The game is way too zoomed in for how visually identical everything in the game looks.
>>
>>12505627
>nuh uh
Good one. Just admit you didn't even play it.
>>
>>12505631

Retard
>>
>>12503905
The game was made when console RPGs were still relatively new and the people who bought them wanted to get their money's worth. If you want easier JRPGs just play anything past 1994, almost all of witch can be beaten in a weekend without guides (FF6, Chrono Trigger, etc).
>>
>>12503905
The music and art design are Kino THOUGH

Just play a romhack that balances it to not be cbt (or use fast forward)
>>
>>12503905
Should have used a telepipe 59 mins in
>>
>>12504161
Some gay attention seeker aka a youtuber I guess
>>
>>12503905
Don't worry op, Microsoft are implementing Copilot into xbox soon so before you know you can watch AI play the game on your behalf
>>
>>12503905
Friendly reminder, Phantasy Star Collection on PS2 has the US and JP versions for all of the classic PS games, let's you add an EXP multiplier, speed up walking and reduce random battle frequency. The only downside is the audio emulation isn't perfect. But there aren't even hacks or GG/PAR cheats available for some of those options, so it's still one of the best ways to play them even today.

He watched the same video as me and it's relevant for the north American market- I just took 5 seconds to check the JP release date.

Wasn't even worth a response

All this game actually needs to be perfectly playable is the hack that increases movement speed. It's amazing how much better this game feels to play when your party is moving with some urgency.
>>
>>12503905

>>
The difficulty is ok I just wish it was shorter, like a lot of jarpigs
>>
>>12505773
The most amazing thing after the Phantasy Star series is that they were released in some European countries (UK at least), when almost no console JRPG did.
>>
>>12503987
You quoted the same guy twice, doofus.
>>
>>12504163
Yeah, that's what someone who got filtered by Wizardry would say.
>>
>>12507481
Not surprising, a large percentage of Sega’s consoles were sold in Europe. See: the long list of 90s Master System released exclusively in Europe.
>>
>>12507536
Still UFOs in a console landscape deprived of RPGs, Sega didn't give a fuck that nobody else was releasing them and that there was no precedent; gotta applaud that

The four dams in a row full of robots is the most obnoxious stretch of dogshit dungeon crawling I think I've ever experienced. Good lord. What the fuck were they thinking with this shit?
>>
>>12508231
The dungeons were made by a noob, according to that interview posted early in this thread. New level designers tend to make tedious slogs when trying to make something difficult.

I can't believe no one said anything about this. Individually, they don't seem so bad. But the fact that they're all crammed together, essentially making them one megadungeon, is absolute misery. This is worse than the teleporter maze at the end of Wizardry 7.
>>
>>12508260
I haven't played it in 30 years and I don't really remember any the mazes but for the some reason the bottom-right image of Yellow Dam is triggering tf out of me. The Green Dam image feels more like PTSD.
