Okay, we all know how this worked, but WHY? The combined ROM is only 3MB with all the duplicate data removed, why bother with this logistical nightmare when they could've just waited 8 months and released the full game at once? Maybe even faster since they wouldn't need to test and prototype this meme technology. It's not like Sonic 3 was rushing to reach the stores by Christmas, it came out in February, then Sonic & Knuckles was the same year in October. I just don't get it, was it another one of Naka's dumbass ideas that no one could oppose?

The Sonic and Knuckles part of the cartidge also served as an adaptor if the Sonic 3 part didn't fit into the console you had. But it was obviously a logistical nightmare that made very little in return since no one else ever did it in the entire industry.

Sonic 3 was rushed not because of mcd, but because Sonic Team were developing the abandoned Sonic The Hedgehog 3D with the SVP.
The idea of lock-on and adding more levels only appeared at the very end of the development of Sonic 3, which is when they started composing the music for S&K and planning the level order, but yeah Sonic 3 was first envisioned as a full single game.
S&K is effectively a direct sequel, not "the second half that had to be cut"
