I'm still loving my Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 and IPEGA PG9083s setup, it's not much, but for the price I payed for both it's great, the tablet doesn't run anything past PS1 too good, but does PS1 mostly fine, and the controller doesn't have the best directional pad, but again it's fine considering it was dirt cheap. I just finished Altered Beast with 3 lives and 3 HP for the 1st time, before I could only do it with everything maxed out, I did use continues aswell because I'm a filthy casual, I'll admit that.

What are you guys currently playing through and/or what did you beat recently? What handheld are you currently using?

Google Pixel 3 + IPEGA 9087S. I'm currently using it for PSP and PS1 emulation, both of which it can run at 1080p. But a year ago I was playing DC and NDS.
I got the phone for 115€ refurbished and the controller for 15€. It's pretty good value considering I used it as my main phone for a couple of years before repurposing it into a handheld.

Drastic, the only game I've ever had trouble with is Hotel Dusk for some reason, but it also plays up when I try it on DS emulators on PC
>>
>>12506717
I always used Drastic on my Pixel 3 and it worked fine for the games I wanted to play.

Is there a game that's very demanding in it's opening segment? I'm looking at the Batocera benchmark guide and for the NDS it says
>High-end (Pokemon Diamond/Pokemon Pearl/Solatorobo The Red Hunter)
I really doubt a Pokemon game would be the most demanding thing on the platform. Still, I just tried it out and I'm getting a stable 60fps with the default software renderer and an LCD filter enabled. OpenGL at 3x scaling also gets stable 60fps (but there's some visual artifacts). Both can be sped up to 170%-200% speed, so there's plenty of headroom I assume.

Their hinges so far are the sturdiest out of any of them and their build quality is pretty solid in general. The Miyoo Flip already has a bad reputation for its hinges and the Mini as far as I know has had a few complaints about it. If you want to get the inferior RG34XX-SP then you don't even have to worry about the dome piercing at all since it's fixed there, it just has the crappy looking upper portion of it and sticks on a system that does not need sticks.

Guys, I haven't been paying attention. Have the RAM and storage price hikes affected handhelds? Maybe I was too late to the Thor meme and it's now twice the price? Not that I'd really need one to be honest. My DSi LL is doing fine with retro emulation, but I'm just curious. I obviously missed on buying a 3DS when they were cheap for example. Curious if it will get even worse.

The specs are pretty good, but AYN is known for shoddy quality control. The 12GB and 16GB models are not worth it since they don't really impact the number of games you can play (at least right now since Android versions of Proton, aka GameNative/GameHub/Winlator, are still not good and Switch games are playable on the 8GB model).

>>12508750
It's fine if he wants to play even more games on a single handheld and if he wants a much better display. See pic

>>12508763
>Have the RAM and storage price hikes affected handhelds?
Yes. RG-34XXSP has gone down from 2GB to 1GB RAM. Some higher end x86 devices had to increase their prices by $100-$500, although those usually have 16GB-64GB RAM. The only thing that's not affected are the devices that have already been manufactured and are available in warehouses.
Future low end and mid range chinkhelds ($50-$300) could be relatively unaffected since they're usually in the range of 500MB to 8GB RAM. But I'd still expect them to be 5%-25% more expensive depending on how much memory they have.
>>
>>12508778
>had to increase their prices by $100-$500

gaddam
>>
wtf? is it really that complicated to set up one of these devices?
>>
>>12508750
Mostly for the better battery life and to have DS games and other older systems look better. Also to keep my 3DS is decent condition, my A button is getting a little mushy so I don't want to abuse it too much more.
I was considering buying another 3DS that I won't have to worry about abusing but the Thor has me intrigued even though it's a bit more expensive I am not rolling the dice on a used 3ds especially if the Thor is good or maybe even better >>12508778
I'd probably just go for the 8GB version if it can run 3DS well as I'm not too interested in modern titles on it as I have my PC for those and I wouldn't be bothered messing around with configurating to get things to run but maybe that means the Thor isn't for me idk

>>
>>12508931
>I'd probably just go for the 8GB version if it can run 3DS well
The bottleneck in 3DS emulation is the CPU power and the maturity of the emulators. Even 2GB RAM would be enough for 3DS emulation.
I'm not sure if the "Lite" version (which has a slightly weaker CPU) is as capable of 3DS, but the "Base" model definitely is according to all YouTube gameplay videos I've seen. You'll just have shader compilation stutters which only affect first playthroughs.
>>
>>12508739
>When it came out I heard some complaints about input lag and the touchscreen not being as good as the stylus but I haven't heard any complaints lately.
Nothing has changed on that front. The touch screen feeling will never be the same because it's functionally a different technology entirely which is why you need a much bulkier and different stylus. The games will always fundamentally feel different to playing on a real DS or 3DS.

The input lag is still there and so far hasn't been addressed outside of the actual button input side of things so anything that requires you to use the touch screen longer than one second will become unplayable meaning any FPS games like Metroid Prime: Hunters or Dementium: The Ward, The World Ends With You, all the Trauma Center games, EBA and Ouendan, Ninja Gaiden DS, Rhythm Heaven, both DS Zelda games, and more are simply not playable in any realistic degree.

3DS emulation also sucks and has ever since its inception because of shader caching being a major issue tied to it causing visual and performance issues, the emulators constantly keep getting taken down by Nintendo so they have to keep picking up the pieces with new projects leading to them never being able to fully optimize it, and having visual or performance issues that never existed on a 3DS even when you get past the shader caching stuff. 3DS emulation is more mature than Vita emulation, but they're both not great at all unless your only plan is to play Pokemon really.

All that's really been addressed has been the screen desyncing on the Thor and RG DS. Past that you're getting a Thor more for the DS, 3DS, and Wii U side of things and only for stuff that doesn't rely on the touch screen for anything more than menuing.
>>
>>12509049
There are mods that change the zelda games to button and stick controls
>>
>>12509080
Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that if you want to play them as intended they're unplayable.
>>
>>12509049
So it's still worth just getting a 3ds over it, is what you're saying
>>
>>12509083
Depends if you are fine with putting up with games not being playable at all that would be on the DS or 3DS and dealing with constant shader compilation. The main benefit would be Wii U really.
>>
>>12508163
>Retroid will most likely return to ips for the next one
Good.
>>12508739
It's a good device with drawbacks. It doesn't have the precision of a resistive touch screen. The top lid is super thin and the hinge isn't 100% trustworthy. You have to use the carrying case or you risk braking the top screen. The ergonomics aren't very good compared to normal horizontal handhelds. The OLED panels have some image retention issues and are pentile. But it's a good emulation device overall.

Linux on thor fixes all the latency
>>
why android lags so much?
>>
>>12509135
No. It improves it by an amount that makes normal games more viable to play. Neither the Thor nor the RG DS fix the input latency on the touch screen when in Rocknix/Knulli for inputs that are longer than a second. When Rocknix came out people were testing Canvas Curse I think it was and showed it's still not even close to being there yet.

I'd love for someone to actually make a proper video on Rocknix that actually shows touch screen games for an extended period of time, not stuff like RGC does that are non-touch screen-focused because it gives people the wrong impression on the system.
>>
>>12509141
Because it's bloated as fuck. It runs better when you have custom versions that get rid of a lot of that bloat.
>>
>>12509147
I honestly don't think a lot of these youtubers care about the DS at all. They never really ever mentioned the DS or 3DS in their roundups of comparison videos when they were really good value and price competitive with other handhelds and the best way to play dual screen games, with a big collection they should have pretty much always come up as they themselves should have just had one in their rotation. Their Thor reviews even long term reviews barely touched on the touchscreen for DS games which through normal play if they actually played DS games should have come up as either a positive or negative, even if they don't play them it should have been a big focus on them trying out various touch heavy games to show it off
I know it's a joke that retro handheld enthusiasts don't play games but I actually believe it now
>>
>>12509185
Even in Wulff Den's review he wouldn't shut up about the Steam aspects of it instead of talking about what people actually want it for (DS, 3DS, Wii U). Hell, pretty much every review I've seen almost never even touches on how well it does on Android games despite having the capability of playing the big gachas for example.
