What was your reaction the first time you heard of, and then played, Metroid Prime?

i took a giant shit

>this is a good game

God tier game

I got the Gamecube on Christmas years after it came out, with a stack of games. Metroid Prime was a relatively unassuming game, the only Metroid I played before it was Return of Samus, and it was pretty miserable. The jump in graphics from that were insane first off, and it struck me as the next logical step from Ocarina of Time. I quite enjoyed the game and it essentially got me into the series earnest.

>Japanese game given to American developers
>Yet another FPS, how original
My reaction was that this would probably be completely shit but I'd give it a chance. There were various marketing spins that helped warm me to the game before it came out. For example, Nintendo said it wasn't a FPS, it was a FPA (a brand new genre), and also that Miyamoto had a relatively high level of involvement, as well as a few other NCL staff (such as the composer). Miyamoto added scanning and in the pre-release hype that made it seem like it was something more than a generic shoot'em up. Well, scanning turned out to be shit (one time, missable scans, what the hell?) What I liked most about the game was the art design.

That's Metroid Prime 2!

I stood up and slowly clapped

>massive hype
>absolutely lived up to the hype
Perfect game to cap off my teenage years of gaming. Started with being obsessed with Metroid 1 in 1st grade, finished with MP my senior year.

>Really? An FPS? I'm not really into those.
>Okay so the atmosphere and exploration in this game are actually kind of immaculate.
>This is the best game ever made.

>first time you heard of
doa game. no chance at it being good. completely wrote it off.
>and then played
i saw it at a best buy kiosk and couldnt believe how good and smooth it looked. i ended up getting a $99 cube for it.

>Huh Metroid game, okay, rent
>Holy shit this is awesome
>*lands on Tallon IV*
>*spends 15 mins in the first room just seeing the different effects stuff has on my visor, like the water, the rain drops, firing my cannon at different stuff*
>Okay this is amazing, graphics will never get better than this
>>
>>12506407
I don't know who this Metroid guy is but his game sure is shit
>>

Excitement because I actually started with Echos, then a lot of tension headaches as I kept going back and forth between magmoor again and again and again and again and again and again and again.

Beat it, but it was not as good as echoes, and bored me to death at times. 8.2/10

I had positive memories of it as a kid but replayed it recently and it was just awful, totally rancid dogshit.
>>
I got a boner, my sister walked in, and i piped her right then and there. My mother took away the gamecube for some reason :-(.
God, my sister was tight

This. Prime’s graphics were incredible.

I was not excited about it being fps despite being a huge metroid fan. I remember looking at the ads in the back of egm with future and prospective games listed with prices. I was tracking Metroid back there since it was listed as Metroid 64. I always imagined a 3rd person game somewhere between oot and castlevania 64.
Was pumped when it released, it was great

Looked like a travesty and played like one as well. Returned to it 15 years later and found it mostly okay.
>>
>wow these controls are fucking retarded

not including modern dual joystick controls was a crazy decision.

great game though when i played it two years ago on the wii.
>>
>>12506407
>this okay, controls really poorly like an n64 game instead of like halo
>these enemies sure are damage sponges
>scanning is very boring.
>oh they expect me to go all the way back?
>oh they expect me to go all the way back, again?
>oh they expect me to go all the way back, again again?
>progress feels really slow for no reason.
>these areas aren't very interesting.
>okay, snow area.
>oh hey I found a way back to the first area
>oh I forgot something in the snow area
>oh I have to go through magma caverns again to get back.
>this game is taking really long.
>dropped it for over a decade
>well the internet says its one of the greatest games ever made I'll just play through it again
>huh the back tracking is still pretty obnoxious
>alright got back to where I remember being last, pretty smoothly.
>these mine areas are kinda ugly
>okay, shame there hasn't been a single good boss so far
>basically at the end game now
>return to the area near the ship
>get told to go back and find 14 artifacts
>there goes my motivation to beat the game
>tell the internet it's kinda crap and it's way over-praised
>people tell me I'm supposed to just know about the artifacts before ever playing the game
>everyone insists it's not that bad if you just know about the artifacts and get them at odd points here and there throughout the game when you finally can
Look, not every game is for everyone but you're out of your mind if you think this is what a 9/10 is like, let alone an 8 or even a mid-7/10 game. I love replaying fun games, but this is not a game built for replays.
