>undubFor what purpose? Classic style soulful English voice acting is one of the big appeals of retro gaming.
>english dubFor what purpose? Classic style soulful Japanese voice acting is one of the big appeals of retro gaming.
Because I like playing with the country of origin's language
Anyone here know some 80s/90s animes with the most laughably shitty dubbing you ever heard? That stuff is like crack to me.
>>12508405Unfortunately some people hate to have fun. In my experience most dubs aren't offensively bad (as in they take away from the game itself) so I don't see the hate.
>>12508405>English voice acting is one of the big appeals of retro gaming. No the fuck it isnt. I absolutely despise "retro gaming" and our commodification of old electronic art from Japan. I don't give a fuck about le retro culture or all the funny translation memes. I'm well aware most of you don't like to read books but if I have the choice to play Ape Escape 3 with Cartoon Network dub voices or with the original japanese audio and subtitles, I'm choosing the subtitles
>>12508446It's obvious you're a tranny but you had to mention a pedo meme game too so there was no question
>>12508453Yeah and it's obvious you're a dipshit so you have no appreciation for the art of these games and can only spout /v/ memes
>pedoGo back, we love lolis here.
You zoomer trash will never figure out how to use the word "soulful".Dubs are garbage, same as you.
I prefer games with no voice acting. No voice acting is one of the appeals of retro gaming.I generally pick the original dub with subtitles if I can. Depends on the game, if I wanted to replay an MGS for some reason I'd go with English dub. Final Fantasy X, for example, I go with JP dub.
Bad voicework in a language I understand is better than good voicework in a language I don't.
>>12508417https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZT94_yTOlsthis is on the more watchable end of early dubs
>>12508405For something like Megaman games I already grew up with the dubs for so long, and enjoy experiencing the more "real" versions now.For something like Yakuza, even the company realized it was better to leave it undubbed and the first game was just a misstep on that.
>>12508417Check out "Dragon Ball Z" for one of the worst dubs ever made.
>>12508463There's something special about classic lolis.
>>12508405In some instances, the dubs are cheap. And I don't mean cheap as in "bad", I mean cheap as in "little work was done". Like, they dubbed combat and nothing else. No cutscenes, no story events, etc. At that point, choosing undub means choosing to have some form of voice acting.
>>12508405Why would you play an American version of a Japanese game with the American parts stripped out when you could just go back to your own country and play the Japanese version?
>>12508417The "dubs that time forgot" tag on archive.org is a goldmine
>>12508960Because English voice acting for Japanese stuff used to be low-budget garbage and often still is. They would whine and exaggerate so much, so many high-pitched voices that hurt my ears. The tone of scenes often completely changes. I don't understand Japanese but most media I've consumed in 36 years is Japanese, I can tell when their tone, speed, and inflection matches the words I'm reading or not at the very least. I can't stand the whiny english dub shit, oddly a lot of the Japanese voices are deeper too, which is nice.
>>12508967So why not play the Japanese version?
>>12508974Because the English versions have Japanese voices with English subtitles? It's actually one of the reasons I prefer retro, the lack of voice acting. I prefer if it isn't there in the first place.
>>12508980Why would it have subtitles if it was dubbed? Seems a little pants and suspenders to me. By the way if you like Japan and the Japanese language why did you never bother to learn it?
>>12508990Learning Japanese is hard. Kanji is complex as hell, and there's like 500 of them, and each can be read in multiple ways.
>>12508405For Symphony Of The Night and Resident Evil, their dubs are so fucking ingrained in me that I can't have it any other way. They are really not great as dubs, but they have an old amateurish and a bit goofy quality that I'm just fond of, and even nostalgic for in only their cases. The redub of Symphony is technically more competent, but it's not good enough to actually be good, and I find it mostly misses some melodramatic energy of the old dub. With Syndicate Wars, that has a dub in my native tongue, and at the time this was extraordinarily novel to me, because only babby games would usually get Swedish dubs back then. So, a dark and violent sci-fi game with a serious tone, but in Swedish, it made me feel like I was treated more as an "adult," like the game wasn't grossly patronizing me. It was also a cool game.Replaying that for the first time in ages around XMas, I set it up in Swedish, and I find that for the most part it holds up, but I saw a few cracks here and there.I actually went and fixed a number of errors in the Swedish language text files for the sourceport for the game (mostly typos and a few minor consistency problems), so that's in there now for the handful of people who give a fuck about that.I still like having that kind of novelty for the game though.Otherwise, I mostly don't like dubs for things. As a weeb, I've hated almost all anime dubs I've ever encountered, and I feel like English anime dubbing today has actually gotten substantially worse, with worse voice acting and more weird censorship and politicized rescripting.>>12508714Strongly disagree, English dub actors these days can't act or emote for shit, and they clearly don't get the time and money to try to work out the best way to do performances, so a potentially half-decent actor still gets stifled by the dub production.I'd much rather read subs and hear more alive voice work in a foreign language, the performances feel way more immersive.
>>12508967>I don't understand Japanese but most media I've consumed in 36 years is Japanese, I can tell when their tone, speed, and inflection matches the words I'm reading or not at the very least.Same, but younger (1992). My brain reads subs fast and it kind of manages to meld with the Japanese voices. It's actually funny that I understand English audio perfectly fine, yet my eyes dart instinctively to subtitles if there.>>12508980I like it when retro games have good voice acting, and some do.>>12508990You seem to struggle with reading comprehension. English is a very easy language, it's in the same family as my native tongue, and his circumstances are either similar, or he speaks it natively, but Japanese is a completely fucking different one from the other side of the world.Anyone raised on English (or other Germanic tongues), will have inherent difficulty trying to learn it, it's the same reason the Japanese usually don't speak or read English well.Did you know Japanese doesn't have plural forms? None. Instead you just infer plurality from context, that's pretty goddamn different. You obviously CAN learn Japanese, I know a guy who translates doujins, but it's more of an undertaking than relatively more local languages.
>>12508405Some are indeed very soulful but not all of them. There's nothing wrong with wanting to experience the original vision either.
>>12509064You're the one struggling, this thread is about undubs, where there's an English dub and somebody replaces it with the original audio so why would there be English subs with an English dub?
>>12509145This would obviously be done for games which either already have English subtitles (some have both audio and subtitles), or for games where someone has created them.If you look at something like Persona 3, it presents all its dialogue with text, and for significant dialogue, voice acting. For such a game, it would be as simple as replacing the dubbed audio with the original Japanese audio.
>>12508405"No".
>>12509145Most games with voice acting have subtitles to go with the dialogue.
>BRO INTENTIONALLY HORRIBLE TRANSLATIONS AND BAD VOICE ACTINGS ARE THE APPEAL HAHA YIU WATCH OLD KUNG FU MOVIES FOR THE ACTION? RETARD IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE FOR THE RETARDED FORCED ACCENTS I'M A XILLENIAAAAAAAAL POISONED BY IRONYYYYYY
>>12509239The irony now being that you yourself are making a horribly irony poisoned shitpost. Don't be your own enemy.
>>12509161>video games can not and will never be artI think that's an overcorrection caused by those fagtards who were desperate for old film critic approval, and who were really keen on "videogames finally growing up" and other dishonest bullshit like that.Any creative endeavor has a potential to have artistic value, even when there's money involved, it's just that this merit should NEVER be decided by unbearable faggots who don't actually even like videogames, and instead want videogames to senselessly ape another form of art entirely (failed film writers and journos), or for videogames to "serve a societal purpose" (socialists).
>>12508405I avoid the English versions of games altogether because I hate censorship, and here you are purposefully playing the absolute worst shit imaginable.
>>12508405What's got the Doc sweating?
>>12509276>I hate censorshipTranslation: I am a pedophile
Eh, it usually depends to me on which language sounds more fitting for the game's setting.
>>12509291It was brave of you to confess that about yourself. Not smart, but brave.
>>12509239>BRO INTENTIONALLY HORRIBLE TRANSLATIONS AND BAD VOICE ACTINGS ARE THE APPEALYeah pretty much.>HAHA YIU WATCH OLD KUNG FU MOVIES FOR THE ACTION? RETARD IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE FOR THE RETARDED FORCED ACCENTSI watch them because I enjoy them, one of the qualities I enjoy is the bad dub. You could've just said you liked subs but instead you made yourself out to be a retard. It's like nobody on this board realizes people don't always share the same tastes as themselves.

>>12509239This faggot probably hates Kung Pao : Enter The Fist.
>>12508417I remember when I was first getting into the internet in the year 2000 and obsessively downloading everything DB/Z/GT related there was this awful fandub (of the two Cooler movies but for all I know there could have been more) that was hilarious because it gave Piccolo a high pitched nasally voice, like Fozzy Bear. I've searched all over for it just to have a nostalgic laugh but can't for the life of me find it anywhere. I remember getting excited learning of the "Big Green" dub but was disappointed to find out that wasn't it.
>>12509239>INTENTIONALLY HORRIBLE TRANSLATIONS AND BAD VOICE ACTINGS ARE THE APPEAL Yes actuallyhttps://youtu.be/nOmbzUE6UAY
>>12509291So you are as normal as one can be?Good for you.

>>12509340The point of Kung Pow was to satirize bad English dubs
>>12509690You can like something and also make fun of it anon.
>>12508417I rewatched Angel Cop recently and completely forgot that the English dub is total dogshit. Angel herself sounds disinterested and like they only did one take, and that one character who's supposed to be a child is obviously an adult doing a kids voice, but it's bad enough to sound like a parody.
>>12509669>CACAKARAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!Lmfao, I can't take moon speak seriously. It's all so absurd.
>>12509690>what is affectionate parody>>12509887Angel Cop is hilarious.
