When would you say was the best era to be a Nintendo fan? Factoring in
>Their current console and releases
>The state of their IPs and Second Party devs

(To a lesser extent)
>Fanbase and what it was like to be a fan of them and their IPs at the time
You can specify a console generation or specific years. Try to avoid "X+1 year was better than X year because you can enjoy everything before X+1 too!" because that just makes this conversation must more boring

I find myself feeling very fond of the early Gamecube era. Despite the loss of Rare, a lot of their IPs had released very strong games and Nintendo was doing very experimental releases with things like Pikmin and Animal Crossing. Pokemania was settling but still proved stable and enjoyable to hardcore fans. This was also a bit before data-mining diminished all mystery with games.

FTFY. Don't let it happen again.

For me it’s definitely the GBA/GameCube era. It really felt like a major creative peak for Nintendo, even though people hate on Sunshine and Wind Waker.

1. Acknowledging newer consoles exist has always been a thing on /vr/. The focus is on older consoles but if you can argue why the 3DS era was superior to older ones go ahead, the discussion remains about temporal eras of Nintendo's history in the end.
2. If this were to only include true retro consoles Gamecube and GBA and Pokemon Mini would be axed too (Pokemon Mini might be considered an exception due to its simpler and unique nature leaning towards classic alongside being basically Gen 2 Pokemon but would still be pushing it). No, I don't care what the sticky says, Dreamcast was the last retro console.

>globally
The NES era. Nintendo ruled the entire video game world uncontested and very quickly became something of a cultural cornerstone.
>in Japan
The Super Famicom's life cycle. Literally the above but better.
>in the West
The N64's life cycle. Some of the greatest games ever made backed up by Pokemania.
>>
Up until the Wii and DS started heavily focusing on the casual market/non game players.

>Gamecube era
Really? I feel like that was one of the worst times to be a Nintendo fan. You had lots of great games, but you just outright missed a lot of big sixth gen multiplats. I was in elementary school for most of its life cycle and I felt like shit being a diehard Nintendo fan back then. Every big third party game missed the Gamecube.

The GameCube launched during my senior year of high school. I guess for me I didn’t feel like I missed out on too much since I’m not a JRPG fan and GTA has never appealed to me. I never felt like was really lacking stuff to play on the Cube.

Only an issue if you were not an idort.

I'd say NES > SNES > Gamecube (but just narrowly as I feel the 3rd-Party Support, while not as extensive as the other consoles, still existed. Honestly I could see the argument for the N64 instead)
>>
>>12509414
It wasn't even missing Final Fantasy or GTA that bugged me back then, but other random stuff that my friends loved and I couldn't play. No MvC2, no Burnout 3, no Star Wars Battlefront, no Tekken or VF or DOA, no Gran Turismo or Forza, no Psychonauts.
>>
>>12509416
Personally I think the GC had way better third party support than the N64 overall.

nes/snes/gameboy era was the golden age
n64 era is when they got usurped by sony but they still had must have games (mario 64 was worth getting the console for alone)
gba/gamecube era was really the last hurrah with nintendo for me. still some classic titles but the wii was a total non-starter for me with motion controls and i just havent felt the need to buy a nintendo product since then. i still of course play the old library i just do not care about modern nintendo at all

Crazy how much hardware Nintendo had but Sega's amount of hardware was too much for consumers.
>>
worshipping a company instead of caring about what the best games are on any given console is why you are giant faggot pedo losers

NES

I don't know how someone can say otherwise

No Internet to enjoy fan discussion, no way to really know about Japanese-only games, I can see the appeal of it but going on just arcades and NES and Nintendo Power and DIC cartoons seems rough in comparison to what comes after

Impossible question because inevitably everyone will default to whichever era they grew up within and are nostalgic for. For me, that’s 1996-2002.
>objectively
Probably NES and early SNES era bc Nintendo redefined gaming globally. Or the n64 era, bc even though it got overshadowed, it had all the attention, the most viral, iconic games of that time, and became sort of a cultural touchstone for the 90s and the early 3D era. GCN was great in its own right but didn’t get to those heights, even though people really associate it with that period just as much as iPods and mp3 players. Lots of people have fond memories of the Wii, but I had already aged out of consoles by then, mostly. Wii U was an embarrassment and is only of interest to retro collectors now. Switch sloppified everything.

It was kind of like being a Mac person in the 90s: you missed out on a huge amount of software, especially games.
